    Thanks Dave

Its just the fact that all I’ve heard are problems after problems with vista regarding running software/hardware etc.

Bought a new Summa 1260 wide plotter got a desktop built with xp installed and everything runs great, touch wood.

Just need a new laptop for both home use and some work stuff I can do at home, as long as it allows me to use corel x3 and signlab.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply

    Robert / Martin

Thanks for the prompt replies, will try printone tomorrow, whats the best degree of blade for everyday use, not that I use it every day, thats probably why its lasted so long.

Martin, you say as though the blade is seperate from the holder. the one I have is like a black plastic tube with a retaining ring half way down with a brass part at the bottom that includes the blade, I thought this was an assembly as such.

Thanks for the prompt reply, the reason I am asking is that I have a customer who I done some mag signs for. He is saying they are not as heavy or strong as previous ones he had and that he has lost a couple saying they have come off.

My immediate reaction is they have not been fitted properly or are not on flat panels.

He denies this saying he has had mag signs on various vehicles and never had this problem. He thinks the mag is not strong enough.

Incidently the material used was from europoint and I have not had this problem before

I have a similar thing on the go at the moment and was wondering is it better done in toughehen glass ? If you do it in acrylic, is it actually acrylic or perspex (whats the main difference between the 2 products)

If doing them with acrylic or perspex can I get them anywhere pre-cut with the nice polished edge ?

The examples shown by you guys look terrific, really classy looking.

Is it advisable to attach raised lettering to a dibond or foamboard panel ?

Thanks for the prompt replies, I was thinking along the same lines as Rob that the glass would be a nicer finish.

When asking a glazier I assume you have to give them a template rather than stating something like 500mm x 200mm, small radius on corner and 10mm hole 25mm in from each corner.

There are various window films that can help combat this problem. You can reduce the glare dramaticaly depennding on what product you go for, a lot depends on the clients needs, do people need to see in or out of the affected glass ?

If I can help give me a call.

If you intend to place the sticker on the inside of the glass does that mean its printed in reverse and on the adhesive side of the sticker ?

The oki prints onto printable vinyl, white or clear seem to be all you can get, A4 size, but you would have to trim / cut the to size manually.

The other option may be the Epson c86 with th craft robo, with the contour cut facility. Just a thought.

Be carefull using heat gun on shop front glass / windows. If its laminated and you use too much heat you will crack the glass from the edge if it is not a perfect cut on the glass or you can damage the interlayer in the glass.

Your best shot is start to remove the film and hope that it is good quality which normally strips easier, most of the adhesive will come away with the film, any glue left on the glass can be removed as stated in previous reply, with a 6 inch razor scraper but you must make sue you use a new blade to ensure you dont scratch the glass.

If its really bad, use rapid remover or a good quality adhesive remover to soften th adhesive first.

If the main reason for installation is to hide lights etc from outside but still allow as much light as poss in via the glass you would be better using a window film, not a vinyl.

Anglian Window Films do matte films for flat glass, mainly for this sort of thing, films like the matte white will stop you seeing in, unless an object is directly against the glass, then you will see the outline, but still allow 77% light transmission through the glass. When fitted it looks similsr to etched vinyl.

Anglians number is 01603-420574 if it helps

Sounds like you have got contamination under the film. Especially as it sounds like you have fitted it on the outside of the screen, the film is not outside weatherable and will scratch very badly if it is on the outside.

Even though you think you have your glass as clean as possible, if you try to install window film on the outside the glass will be both pitted with small marks and believe me by the time you remove the release liner and get your tint into position, if you are not experienced you will get contamination between the tint and the glass.

I always install visors on the inside of the screen ( window film ) but on the odd occassion I do a visor with vinyl I fit that to the exterior.

    Bob

ps if you have a window tint guy near you it may be best to get him to do the next one, should only cost £15 to £20 for a visor

This may not be everyones method, but I find that it a lot easier wet, preferably with rapid tac, allows a short period to get film into correct position, squeegee, then move onto 2nd panel, by the time you are finished with that one the first one is ready for removal of tape.

It can only be a fault with the product or the instalation, either it wasnt just water in your bottle and something has reacted with the adhesive or it hasnt been sufficiently squeegeed. even if you have not squeegeed it enough it should not come off the glass completely but you may get a couple of spears /fingers.

June 22, 2005 at 7:21 am in reply to: who is best supplier of mirror effect vinyl?

One way vision is down to the light ratio,ie 7 to 1, to obtain true one way vision there has to be 7 times more light on the outside so to speak as there is on the inside( area you want to keep private)

We achieve this by using what you would class as limo tint 5% vlt, or by using both mirror tint, silver 20, and then the 5%.

You are right when you say it works in opposite at night, ie when ratio is reversed, lighter inside than out.

Phone Bekaert Specialty Films, 01905-640400, they can advise better and will send you some swatch samples.

Regarding the “tint”, if you fit any visor tinted or solid the rules are the same, if it is a tinted visor it should by law allow 45 % of light to transfer through it.

6 cm from the edge of the obscuration band ( black border around screen )

In most cases this is a waste of time as the visor takes the natural curve of the glass and 6 cm down from the band on the left and right edge of the screen means it will only be approx 4 cm in the centre.

Pete’s right, if the car is in a bump and the insurance find out that there is a visor lower than 6 cm they effectively could refuse to pay out.

This does not stop them being sold at car accessory shops etc, I always advise if they are stopped I cannot accept responsibility, dont issue invoice, they have to admit to it being a self fit.

I do plates to and use the citizen thermal printer, print onto reflective then laminate to acrylic which is sticky, never had any probs.

I’d like to get hold of some of these reflectives with the fancy ghosting, badges, the ones I get from my supplier, sister co of Automarque, are quite bland and run of the mill, have seen some really nice ghosted images, badges but cant locate any. Do you guy’s, Becky & Dewi print your badges and ghosting using your edges & PC60 thingys.

I have cut some in vynil and they look ok once laminated to the plate nut I am limited to what I can reproduce.

Carbon fibre domed digits, can any of you guy’s supply these?

Marty, you state that you print your carbon/3d & shadows, what do you print them with?

Gypsy, Dewi is right, using the printed stickers from automarque is ok, they are cheap and look ok, if you give them a call they will send you a poster with the different badges they do.

You can get tint/film that is what they class as outside weatherable, ie to be applied on the outside of the glass.

If you contact Bekaert Specialty Films, ask for Steve Belfort, 01905-640400. They are not the cheapest but probably supply the best quality of flat glass film.

June 8, 2005 at 6:30 pm in reply to: advice please how do i apply tint to windows?

% figure means the amount of light allowed to transfer through the glass, from the outside to the inside of the vehicle. The higher the % the lighter the tint. The VOSA, VEHICLE OPERATORS SERVICES AGENCY, will accept 45% vlt, visible light transmission, on windows forward of the b post, at a road side check, any darker and the owner/driver will be issued with a prohibition order, a temporary order if the vlt is between 30% and 45% effectively giving the owner/driver 10 days to rectify the prohibition, an immediate prohibition is issued if the vlt is below 30%, this in effect means it must be removed there and then. Glass behind the b post can have any grade of vlt film fitted provided the vehicle in question is equipped with 2 exterior rear view mirrors, ie door or wing mirrors.

If you are unsure what I mean and dont get the gist of this give me a call.

You have to take into account that after th fitting of tints under no circumstances would the vehicl be covered via the insurance if they find out it is lower than 45%, some wont cover if below 70%(standard tinted glass on most cars)

Regarding some of the advice here, I know some people mean well but dont try it if you have not got the basic knowledge or the correct tools. I have been toying with the idea of offering some sort of training, rather than people spending fortunes to be given a biased view on 1 customers product who happens to be running a training session.

If anyone is really interested I dont mind letting them come and see how we do it, ie spend a day here to see the basics etc. I am not saying what we do is the best or easiest or even the quickest but it works for me and I’ve been doing it for over 6 years now.

Like all of us we have our own way of doing things.

On a negative note, as you will appreciate I dont want to advise or show anyone who in reality could become a threat, ie someone who is near to me.

I feel this is fair and it is my way of offering to help some of you guys who have been very helpfull and inspirational to me

Again thanks for the replies, as usual a mixed bag but good to get everyones thoughts.

I got some from europoint and have plyed about with it. See what you all mean regarding static etc.

Vic, you say you apply to bench to remove static, by this do you mean you apply to bench, remove, and then re apply to the vinyl?

Shane, spray water on bench, lay tape on it to discharge static, similar to Vics method ?

PS, Vic, if your local give ma a call, my coffee can’t be as bad as Dewis

The work you guy’s continue to turn out are an inspiration to all us new signees.

Is it true she asked you if you wanted your hair cut round the back and you said no I’ll have it cut in the shop like everybody else. Boom Boom

Or the one where she says your hair needs cutting badly and you said I dont want it cut badly I want it cut right.

Is it the ones listed in Cherwells catalogue as VK Plugs ? Have bought some to try, have to put up some relatively small signs, 1mtr x 600mm in 5mm foamex going onto brick, is it a case of drill the holes and bang in the plugs and thats it ?

Sorry to but in lads but Rob can I ask for the details of the supplier for the road side signs, as in the picture.

Can you get the fixing channel on the rear of the sign and the u clamp brackets on thier own do you know?

I have two large poles outside my unit and this sort of fixing would be ideal for me to attach my own sign.

    Cheers

    Thanks Guy’s

Just wasn’t sure regarding magnetics, like them to have a really nice neat finnish, not that great cutting curves.

Would I be better with a large pair of scissors

Would this be similar to the vinyl used at car dealerships? The reason for asking is I have been aske by a local dealer if I can supply vinyl lettering for the cars on the forecourt, but it must be able to be removed easily and clean, leaving no trace.

Sorry to jump in but just thought it may be the same product, if not can anyone advise.

    Cheers

Speak to Dave Armstrong at Armour Glazing Films, 0121-544-4884, he installs Paint Shield paint protection film, I think all paint protection film is manufactured by 3m with the exception of Bekaert who supply thier own.

I am like you, fairly new to all this. I have found Europoint to be one of the best all round suppliers and its mostly Oracal vinyl, regarded by most on this site as the best all round vinyl.

They give a little discount if you let them know you are amember of UKSB.

Magnetic is approx £9.50 per mtr and can be bought by the metre, not in 10 mtrs like some other suppliers
