    Its hard to say really but obviously if its total blackout then its illegal. Police have a gadget that is basicaly a light source of which they know the presice output in candella, they hold on one side of the glass and a light meter on the other and the meter has to read a minimum of 75% of transmitted light. Any less and they write you a ticket. There are some production cars whose standard tint fail this test. I think it wise to get the customer to sign a disclaimer if in your opinion the tint is too dark so there is no comeback if they’re nicked.

    Hi Phil;

    Saw in a magazine last week, an article about sign writing on vans etc. One thing they did point out was that you could not cover up the front window or either the near & off side front windows of any vehicle.

    Don’t know if this applies to window tint but make them sign a disclaimer

    I hope this info is of help.

    Regards

    Hi Phil

    I used to do a lot of window tinting last year got my film from Johnson window films on 023 8045 4593 all was going well paying about £80 or £90 a roll of 30m I think long time since I ordered any, The problems started on 5th January back to work after Christmas to see a letter from Johnson’s with a letter from the glass and glazing federation regarding the window tint laws it said that from January 1st that fitting window film of any shade to the front 2 windows of a car was now going to be illegal in around about sort of way, so I rang Johnson’s who could only tell me the same as was in the letter and advised me to speak to a solicitor with regards to getting th customer to sign a disclaimer. so rang one ask the question about the disclaimer his reply was that if you get the customer to sign a disclaimer it then show that you are doing something with neglect. but the disclaimer does cover you for any come back from the customer all well and good if they get pulled by the law but they pull out of a junction and run someone down it goes to court you could be prosecuted by the 3rd party or their family for doing something with neglect.

    I do know that some people are still doing front windows I thought it was to big a risk so you can decide for you self

    Hope you can understand all that if it doesn’t read OK please fell free to give me a call 07771 552869. If anyone would like me to scan and post the letter from glass & glazing if I can find it I will do.

    Hi All
    yes Dale you are correct, getting the customer to sign a disclaimer for something we, as professional tinters have been informed is now a breach of the road construction and use act is professional neglect.
    the problem now since the changes in january just gone is that the vehicle inspectorate have the powers to stop you in your car for ANY non factory tint on the front doors of your vehicle. even though there are different actions by both them and the police dependent on how dark the tint is, inevitably it has to be removed.
    we have been tinting mostly vehicles for 11 years and have had customers stopped and procecuted, even for lighter shades. the only thing you can put on front door glass is clear security film.
    unfortunately due to either confussion or ignorance there are still tint companies fitting tint to front ends but its a fact that its a matter of time till someone gets procecuted for doing it, at which point im sure they will throw the book at them to prove a point.

    regards
    Kevin

    Im glad this topic was started cos I wasn’t awfully sure what the new laws were and as I don’t do a lot of tinting I hadn’t given it a thought. Obviously the only answer is NOT to tint front windows then.

    hi chaps, on the note of the disclaimer, we spoke to the glass and glazing federation and they informed us that there is a responsability placed upon both the owner/ driver and the installer, so a disclaimer is pointless and suggesting that it is wrong.
