  • Shop sign raised lettering, Advice please

Have to install 3mm flat cut acrylic lettering to a shop front. The sign that is there at present is 5mm foamboard with vinyl in a signtrim frame. The problem I have is the walls are uneven, sandstone type brick and wanted to know if it would be better to secure something like exterior ply, have it painted to match the shop front and then fix the lettering to the ply.

Any other ideas from the experienced, I have only fitted this type once before and the letters where onto a nice smooth fascia.

Ideas, advice and recommendations greatly appreciated.

    Hi Bob,

If the existing frame is ok why not just whip out the foamalux panel and replace with Dibond then just fix your raised letters to the Dibond.

Did’nt explain myself too good, the old existing sign is smaller.

Is it advisable to attach raised lettering to a dibond or foamboard panel ?

I was under the impression these would flex slightly in the frame.

Ive just had to fit cut out perspex letters on locators to a curved sandstone wall, It was a nightmare job as the sandstone varied in hardness. Took alot of effort and numerous drill bits to complete the job, having said that, it looked very good when done and I didnt have the option of fitting a panel to fix my letters to. I would make sure that if you decide to fix directly to the wall that you allow yourself enough time if you encounter any difficulties. Also if the wall is very uneven ( as was the problem in my case) the letters will need to be all on the same level or they will appear very unlevel.

could you not fit direct to wall using an sds drill, and chemical or fischer fixings and a string line to ensure letters are properly set out ?
    just a thought mind

I have never had a problem using snap-fix fastenings on either foam, acrylic or dibond/aluminium. If you fix direct to an uneven wall then marking out will be difficult, fixings variable and any unevenness in the wall will result in 3mm acrylic flexing which will be visible if glossy finish.

For a more up market finish we usually persuade the customer to have an aluminium sign tray fitted and then fix the letters to this. Ashby produce these very economically and fixing is a doddle. The overall effect easily looks worth the additional outlay.

    Good luck
