As we do a far few numberplates ( oops, showplates) I was thinking of including a page in our website.

The tec boffin who builds it, doesn`t know or can`t do it.

I bet most of you have seen what i`m on about.

You type in your reg, press a button for a certain badge/ background etc.
and you can view the change within second, the price changes as you add or alter the spec of the plates.

Is there a bit of software i could buy or a stock layout thats available.

any help would be most welcome.

    thanks

    Guys,

There is a maze of www sites now offering plates via “builders” on the http://www…..some good..some bad…We have commissioned a completely new “plate-builder” at £££££’s loadsa money cost.

This will be avaialble for use by our customers within their own sites or as a link to ours within the next 6 weeks or so. If interested let me know and i will contact you when ready.

You could probably get a simple “builder” for say £1k – But it would be “simple” and with plates at the moment – content and style is king, so a plate-builder is only going to attract business/use….if it’s “wicked”… hope ours will be ! otherwise i’ll kill the designer.

    becky,

We will be offering 2 options…..still to be costed thoroughly….!!!!!!

    1) Like you say…you promote we make and send to customer ..you get 50%

    2) Additionally we will supply template for “own use” at a monthly fee ( this will be hosted on our server, but all orders come to you) on purchase of a) CD with all number plate graphics supplied and b) a minimum annual purchase of components from ourselves ! – We gota make pennies somehow ???

    Kindest regards

we have just paid £1200 quid for our website with builder in it.
we’ve also had some software made for generating the fonts as they have to be in JPG’s for the java to work and its a ball ache to do by.
we have also had an ebay ad that works from our site developed too so we can start poaching a bit of business off there too.

only problem we’ve spotted is its not strictly legit as no collecting of data for the dvla so we are getting by with the old off road/show use only pretense.

    HI Paul and others…

That plate builder on your site is a good bit of programming. Generating fonts on a website is not an easy thing to do, unless you know how to 😎

If you created a website footer banner to fit on someone’s elses website and was driven by your server then that would also be cool way of marketing

as i understand it and as the man who paid me a visit from dvla said that you have to keep details even if you call it a show plate its a number plate end of story.

When i make “Show plates” i keep all the details as well and get the customer to sign it either in person or electronicaly by e-mail. As i have also been told the same as Chris has.

Gives some back up. i had a visit from plod a while ago and there was nothing they could do as i coudl proove i sold the plates as show plates not road legal ones.

dont get me wrong i take details off anyone who comes into the shop but with the website its difficult to do it so i tend not to bother and hide behind technicalities.
if anyone has a better technique though i’d love to know it as its only a matter of time before i wont get away with it or get slapped on the wrist and wallet by the dvla.

Well surely if they order on line, they must have their postal details and name etc?

just print that off and keep it in your folder thats what i do.

also on your site have a disclaimer that is on teh ordering page, so when they order it says something along the lines of ” i have read and understand the T&C”

Couldn’t you just download the javascripts direct from the numberplate sites, this should give you a good idea how to code it.

I am sure Paul will be pretty annoyed if you stole his Javascript from him! 🙄

I’m not saying to use it. I’m saying you could view the code from different sites to give you a good idea of what you’d need to do.

The solution to this is a new product which I understand is coming to the marketplace before Xmas.

From what I hear you will have ALL the features- from the flags, custom images and such through to the old black and white plates and the other bits and bobs- I think all the customer data gets stored in some sort of database on the server.

I have been told that the system will be a compete ready go, owned system. You get the code and a secured shopping system that goes with it- this allows the operator to buy the code for a one off payment, host it on their own server and then use the plate builder and the built in ecommerce system to sell all over the web (Paypal, Nochex and credit cards will all be supported). I did ask about support and the developers are going to give this.

You will need to keep your eyes peeled for trade ad’s in the sign mags for this system.

As far as I know it’s going to be very affordable- much, much less than the figures quoted here so far.

I can’t really say anymore as it’s against the rules here and the developers are testing at the moment.

Good news for you plate makers- no good for me though- I don’t make plates and I haven’t really got time to get into it. Just stumbled across this when I was looking for something else.

Anyway, hope that lets you know that there is a specifically designed product on the horizon 😀
