  • Do you know any suppliers who have wood patterned vinyl

Posted by Breny on January 3, 2005 at 1:35 am

A customer asked me for fascia sign – wooden background panel with raised perspex letters. His current sign is from quite new rynobond. So I’ve decided to lay on wood patterned vinyl over it. But I didn’t realise that it is so difficult to find such a vinyl.
Do you know any suppliers who have wood patterned vinyl for exterior use?
    Any other ideas welcomed.

As far as I know mate the wood patterned vinyl has been discontinued for a few years.

I thought avery made one, but as I say, it is going to be a rare beast to find now days.

You might approach someone that does digital printing and have them print one for you. Some here have done something similar in the past, and it looked rather effective.

    Cheers

Hi and welcome to the site Breny 😀 I think Shanes right mate, the only company I saw doing this stuff recently was http://www.grafityp.co.uk (it was in a recentish flyer but cant see it on the site 😕 ) but i think they were running it out after it stock was gone. Also I don’t ever remember there being a decent outdoor durable wood effect so your best bet would probably be to get a digital print done – least thay way you can choose the exact shade and get decent durability too.

keep posting, see you around 😉

EDIT- Just a thought, a couple of times i’ve wondered about using the stuff these people do http://www.wilsonart.com/design/ for signage. It’s basically like formica stuff but in all different patterns/colours but i never found out if it would be any good outdoors though 😕

The closest material I’ve come across is Formica, a sort of sticky backed vinyly sort of stuff (great description eh :D) but I doubt its got any sort of guarentee for outdoor use. It was mainly used to cover old kitchen cabinets/worktops and used in general hobby crafts, but you don’t see it as much anymore 😕

Best bet is as has been said, grab the number of someone with a versawassit or a cadet and get them to print it. Costs vary but for around about 700 wide you’re looking at around £15-£20 a metre unlaminated, about £30 laminated. There’s some useful bods on here that will quote you for if you ask about. Probably the quickest solution 😀

    Cheers, Dewi

Edit: Shows how much attention I pay doesn’t it 😳 Nigel already mentioned the formica-style stuff 🙄

No further help, just to add to Dewi and Nigels comments. Was sure someone posted something recently regarding an outside gas/electric meter they printed wood effect onto vinyl. May be worth a search so you can see what it looked like

hi breny & welcome to the boards mate… again, another sporting an avatar image. brilliant, thank you for that 😀

as for wood effect, i agree… i think grafytyp did it too, but from memory victory sent me flyers on it. but that was years ago. i think it had a short life, like has been said. i also think it only came 12 inch wide, or possibly 24inch wide max… so no use as it will duplicate the effect and show a seam when tiled/stacked.

ide go with the digital printed option. you wil be able to choose the patern and have it printed so it doesnt show joins. if any. ide also advise getting it laminated if you can. if nothing else it will increase the life, but will give a nicer gloss finish for it being a fascia. it allows the shop owners to wash it down with whatever and keeps you in the clear. 😉

    best of luck 😀
