Yes it does say it is a 3-5 yr outdoors but it is still a monomeric vinyl, if anyone asked me what vinyl to use for long term vehicle graphics then I would always suggest a polymeric vinyl.

From their website it is a monomeric vinyl, not something I would suggest for vehicle graphics unless for short term graphics only, you would ideally use a 7yr polymeric vinyl for this type of work.

You need a more powerful laser, A local engineering firm near me had one of these installed last year…

    And yes it’s a C02 laser!

Not sure if they would bother cutting di-bond though, but they do undertake cutting small quantity aluminium or steel shapes for signs etc

And……….it is a 5000w laser, if you look to buy a 200w C02 laser then expect to spend around 60k…can you imagine what that monster 5000w would cost ??

Really engraves the colour off the di bond though and gives a classy finish.

C02 lasers will not engrave or cut directly onto metal they are just not powerful / aggressive enough, you need at least a YAG laser for that.

A C02 laser will cut and engrave many different materials from acrylic, glass, wood, rubber, clothing materials, paper etc the list is huge.

True Peter if it is a OEM package then the drivers are for only that make of machine………but it does depend on what language the cutter works on, if HPGL then that covers a wide range of cutters.

Flexi Starter 8, are you talking about Flexisign software or just a ripped off Chinese version, because any Flexisign package will have drivers for a whole host of cutters.

What do you want to spend will define what you can have, an old version of Corel with a print driver or plugin will do, or go with a dedicated package such as Signlab or Flexi or Easysign, it does depend on what you want to be able to do and what budget you have.

Nowadays you can arrange a live online demo with some software packages, maybe worth you looking into.

Just to afford some protection, at the end of the day the choice would be down to the customer and the signmaker whats best, of course as you know Peter any cast vinyl should be up to the job.

Bob I rarely reply on the forums and only do so if asked to or can help with a question, in this case and a rarity it is, the price is one of those were the deal is straight up and certainly goes against the grain.

I can confirm the original rrp was £29,999 + Vat for the AJ but of course you could have always done a deal for a better price maybe a grand or so lower but nothing like the price now doing the rounds.

As for the ex-demo machine if it is the one from us then all I can say today it is a buyers market…….

A used cutter that is still good for a few years and a decent software package that your needs won’t outgrow in six months then for a budget of £700 and this is including the vat is pushing it very hard, I wouldn’t even know what to offer or where to start.

Then again some have set up with a cheap Chinese machine and software and muddled through……..after weeks of asking on here about how to get the pc to talk to the cutter.
Personally set your budget if you can between £1,000 and £2,000 min all in and you will get a package that will see you through several years before hopefully you can expand.

Andy Gray was Sky Football, he and Keys built it up and brought in a host of ideas to transform football broadcasting, sad to see them both go but I do find it strange that they give a warning for what happened at the weekend and sack him for something that happened last year.

Can that kind of thing be done……..sacked in retrospect !!! Surely Sky have not followed the disciplinary code to the book.

The only way I can see this changing for the good is the way the Eurocrats KNOW won’t happen. The buying public stop buying all fish products for a week for a month or however long, if it happened they would have to take action and hopefully bring in common sense rules………..but by then the fishing community would be bankrupt and gone.

We like our comfortable lives to much nowadays (i’m guilty of it) like most others, if change has to happen it needs to come from the bottom up meaning the least well off has to carry the burden first before the corporations feel the heat…………it won’t happen and they KNOW it.

India has a strange synchronicity. Ive never found anywhere in India to be disgusting, though I have never seen dead human bodies.

As a country its undergoing massive changes but will take considerable time for the changes to alter the way of thinking and how things work but not all the changes will be good.

These photos and writing are definitely painting only a side, a negative side at that, India is a beautiful country full of beautiful people.

Not so Nigel, if you have read all of it then the last paragraph would have shown you.

India is indeed “dirty”, “messy” and “smelly” but I have gotten more out of it than any other place I have been. If this wasn’t the case in my two months I wouldn’t have met so many expats who return often, or never leave. As the Taiwanese dancer Lin Huaimin said, whenever he is stuck for artistic inspiration, he goes back to India.

Colin most rolls of vinyl i.e. plotter vinyl are now mainly 1220 max width, print media is a little different, from 762, 914, 1370, 1525 and even up to 3200 when you look at banner material etc.

Most suppliers would have slitting machines so you should always be able to get material slit to suit your needs when required.

No probs on the printer but surprised you took a 1400 wide cutter and not a 1600 wide…………don’t know if you have looked at other printers but the RS-640 and VS-640 from Roland could have been another option along with the JV33 from Mimaki.

Please don’t take this as promoting but GCC are bringing out a add on / optional extra for their cutters, basically it is just a front and back plate that you screw onto the cutter making a extended flat bed just for cutting around printed card, I cannot give any extra info as I’m now on holiday.

Maybe the up and down speed are set too high as in feeding the vinyl back and forth, other tracking problems are…….vinyl not uniformed wound on its core, pinch rollers not in correct position, pinch roller/s on one side are worn, grit roller bearings are worn on one side.

A Summa should track at least 10mtrs back and forth without issue.

I can understand both sides of the argument I read the same kind of posts when some "cowboy sign company" are selling for xxx price on fleabay and the customer you quoted a week ago has just pointed that fact out to you, that customer has done a little bit of research and may take a gamble on the fleabay company supplying the right goods, not all sellers are bad right.

I agree with Shane’s sentiments it is always useful to have a native supplier when things go wrong so the problem can be rectified hopefully asap, same time I can see Andy’s point because afterall you all are in business for one main thing………costs low profits high and with a bit of luck and sense you make a decent living.

A lot of you have heard of the SignPal range of vinyl cutters and I know many still class them as a cheap import and so cannot be that good, just a bearing on this post, only last week I supplied a customer with their third cutter to work alongside the other two, all SignPal and all replaced Roland machines………in hindsight if you check everything out beforehand then sure you can avoid the many pitfalls and import goods a lot cheaper from China.

The downside to this for the sign industry is the UK will business wise become more sterile and you will need to start exporting your signs because there will be less businesses in the UK needing them !

Gary the Newcastle man in charge wouldn’t let us take the printer back down the stairs…….H&S and all that, but we could carry it up another flight and take it down thru the car park…….as in push it down the four levels of car park and ramps, except the the car park was rough concrete and we ended up having to carry the damn thing down four levels (hot)

Now Ibrox was totally the opposite, easy access and a lift that we could fit the printer in 😀 and the best was when things got quiet a wonderful lady called Jean who works for Rangers gave us a full tour of the ground, found out later from a Rangers fan at our hotel we got taken to parts of the ground that you don’t get to see when you pay for a tour………a fantastic ground and history that I was lucky to see.

Thanks to all those who came to say hello and soz Mr.Wilson but our hotel was in the middle of nowhere and so we couldn’t get to go out in Glasgow, but the Dakota hotel is a great place to stay for anyone who is interested.

Steve when we have taken SP-300’s in as p/x deals they generally go back out for £3,300 to £4,000 depending on age and history, I would with your machine start off at £3,000 and settle for £3,500 if you get it.

Caroline if you have the serial number of the printer then that would help if us suppliers get offered a printer as a cheap buy or part exchange.

I suppose you have to ask yourself if you bought a £200 cutter off fleabay and then give yourself a company name then contact a supplier for materials how are we to know if you are a fly by night cheap as chips cowboy or a genuine signmaker.

I guess trading with a supplier for a few years would prove it and at the same time afford you lower prices. Ask yourself this when you have ordered materials from a supplier when have you had to prove that you are a genuine signmaker who as the kit to make signs rather than someone who just wants some sticky back plastic………..

The people who will be fitting the graphics are they vinyl experienced, just asking because if they are not then how will bubble free vinyl cheap or not be an aid to them.

There are plenty of mid term vinyls available now which should all go down very easy if you know what you are doing, I would ask if they know what a squeegee is then decide what vinyl to use 😉

Sandy, SignPal is a OEM version of FlexiSign so you should be able to find plenty of tutorials for Flexi on the web that will relate to SignPal. If you can let me know what level of SignPal you are using then I can send you the comparison chart showing what you get with each level.

Seriously though it does narrow down the options for anyone who wants to compare laser engravers and tool engravers and who they can go to when considering a purchase/outlay for said equipment.

The next year or so will be interesting in marketing terms.

Excuse me if I’m wrong, but you can graffiti laminates whether from a roll or liquid laminate, what you are after is a film that will reject most forms of graffiti such as biro, marker pens, spray paint etc.

Bob I got asked for a quote the other week for a Summa S Class Tangential cutter, now we are talking £6k or more for said machine, now in my own opinion unless you are after cutting 4mm lower case sans serif then why spend so much.

As mentioned before a ‘lesser cutter’ depends what you class as that, will do just the same job and cost you 5k less at least. Most machines run the same/ similar servo motors, have control panels to set speed, pressure, offset, optical eye etc.

Take your pick, most cutters from £800 plus offer a full lcd control panel, most operate with servo motors, have optical eye for contour cutting and most all come with a print driver / plugin to allow you to cut from you existing software along with free software with the cutter.

You will also find 1yr, 2yr and 3yr warranties on various machines just depends what model you go for.

Cutters now days in the price bracket of £800 – £2000 are so much alike when you get past the look and the badge on the front, underneath they are using pretty much like for like parts.

July 30, 2010 at 7:51 pm in reply to: Advice on t-shirt heat press settings please?

If using Siser textile material then I would suggest 155 as your temp and press for 15 – 20 seconds, one rule if it is a tricky application is to extend the pressing time and not raise the temp. Once you get around 170 plus you are reaching the kind of temp that can alter the structure of the textile vinyl and will cause you problems.

I would have thought a vast amount of ‘self adhesive’ vinyls would be good enough for this job. Don’t you think either heat settings or the amount of ink put down will and can effect the media you are using.

If the headstone is a gloss marble stone then I would think it would be done by laser engraving, the quality you can get nowadays from a laser compared to 5 to 10 years back is astounding.
