  • Second floor in my workshop

I’m pretty frustrated. We’ve outgrown our premises again, but rather than moving we decided to just install a second floor in the workshop. So no production today or tomorrow…

The whole workshop is taken over by the German "tischlery" blokes, complete with German journeymen in lederhozen 😮

I’ll post some pictures as soon as they are finished.

I’ve seen those German journeymen before, once on tv, which looked impressive as they built a massive cutom made, hi quality pre fab house in about two weeks,

then again in real life when they replaced a beach front bungalow where i fish, again, the job was done in a matter of days. while the UK builders on a house about 4 doors down spent most of their time messing on the beach and sunbathing, the Germans just got on with it! talk about efficient.

First day 😮 If that was over here the Joists would still be on the back of the truck with the workies inside the cab reading the sun & munchin on a bacon roll 🙄

Why do they need steel? Wood is bloody strong! I’ve seen some pretty amazing wooden railway bridges…..

Look at the size and quantity of those beams. And there are support beams to the floor. Wood can take some serious compression loads. 😉

This job was/is done by just 4 guys. One of them is what we call "fingers" – i.e. an unqualified bloke who is employed to hand you things / pick things up / carry things around. So actually only 3 guys doing the work.

They took measurements on Tuesday, prepped the job in their shop yesterday, and today and Friday to install. Pretty impressive!

    Peter,

Yes, they do have a "forum" to get advice. I think its called the "Brauhaus" !!

After we paid the deposit for the floor to be installed, the unit next to us became vacant. So it goes…….

We are planning to open a branch (in April/May) in the the next town (Walvis Bay) Both myself and my partner live there, and about half our staff as well. That will have to cope with future expansion.

There is actually space to install a 3rd floor (of sorts) – but it will leave you with only 2m headroom. Could be used for storage, though……..

The carpenters finished today. In total, 2 and a half days……

I still need to install some lights, and varnish the deck.

I’ve got 4 guys on the job. They are probably going to take a week to do it….. 🙄

Looks great Gert, do you think the reduction in natural lighting on the lower floor is going to cause any problems??

Brilliant addition of space but I too would miss the natural light. Is it not possible to cut ‘wells’ around those windows so that the light could get down below or maybe you are cutting new windows downstairs?

The downstairs is now somewhat dark and sinister…..

I installed some fluorescent tubes this morning. Much better now. The downstairs space will become dispatch / tool storage area under the floor, the open space is big enough to accept a couple of cars or 1 bus for wraps etc.
Also a big workbench for making frames and such.

Upstairs is application tables, laminating etc.

The white brick structure you can see is a 3 story office block. Grond floor = reception, 2nd floor has the 2x printers and 1 designer, 3rd floor is 1x designer (with vinyl cutter) and our accounts lady.

It is a tight fit, but much better now 😀

Obviously put some thought into it Gert, reason I asked about natural light is because I sometimes struggle with certain jobs under any sort of artificial light. Not sure if it is due to my eye sight getting worse with age or if it has always been that way. As I am not doing the same sort of job I was doing years ago it’s difficult to know what the answer is.
