I just send it to Winplot via Corel. I don’t get that far though. I load the vinyl into the cutter….

then = move cutting head, over bottom RH mark,

choose ‘media alignment’ on cutter. It tries for about 30 secs, hovering over first mark….then stops…and says try again

I was asked to fit some correx marketing boards to units, using DS tape as they didn’t want to damage the cladding.

Anyway, someone ripped one of the signs off, leaving tape/residue on the cladding. The landlord then went mental, demanding the tape removed/cleaned up ASAP. I wish I’d have walked away from that one.

    Sorted! Thanks for everyones help.

I used the ‘Bitmap Colour Mask’ tool, used the eyedropper to select ‘white’, and the surround was gone. It also took away some white from the main image (made it transparent) but I just adjusted the tolerance and it was perfect,

The problem with using a basic mask, was that I had to overlap two images, so I couldn’t really do it that way.

    Thanks again

I have a Bosch circular saw, with a special 6" fine toothed blade, makes a clean cut.

If you haven’t got a steady hand (or you’ve had a few beers the previous night) you can clamp a straight edge in position and use that as a guide.

90% of our business is estate agency work (including commercial signs, developments, shops, offices etc).

We have a lot of good clients, but a lot of Estate Agents feel they should only have to pay pennies for the service.

This is a recent conversation I had (condensed)

‘Our current fitter is terrible, we wait over two weeks for a Sold slip to be fitted. How much would you charge to fit our signs??’

Me ‘we can fit your boards for you for ยฃX ammount’

‘Hmmmm, but that’s ยฃ1 more than we’re paying now though….’

It seems some firms prefer to save ยฃ1 or two per job and have poor service.

THAT is what we’re up against!

    quote Phill Fenton:

Your blades are being blunted because they are coming into contact with the media clamp that holds the vinyl down to stop it curling. This is caused by ink vapor gradually clogging the mechanism that controls the knifes up and down movement. Look closely at the right hand media clamp and you will see scratch marks where the knife has come into contact. This is not normal and should not happen, but is a common fault that develops on these machines

The solution is to create a cutting file consisting of a large number of “0”‘s. When you run this file a few times the rapid up and down action will free off the mechanism so that it returns to normal operation. Alternatively, remove the clamps so that the blade is no longer able to hit them. Or remove the knife and only fit it when you are cutting

Cheers Phill (& Paul). Someone else mentioned the clamps, but I watched the head pass the clamps and thought there was plenty of clearance, so I dismissed that. But, I didn’t realise that the knife sometimes fails to move up and down properly. So, that makes sense now. And I’ve just looked at the clamps, there is indeed a couple of horizontal scratches.

    Thanks again! ๐Ÿ™‚

Kevin, Dave, Stafford; many thanks for the help.

I sorted the problem, was quite simple really. Instead of using a wireless connection, I simply plugged the ethernet cable straight into the PC, bingo! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Thanks again for taking your time to reply,

Will take a look at that link

Many thanks for all the advice fellas. I’ve ordered the composite, that’s a good call.

Will do what John suggested and countersink and countersink the screws and cover them with matching vinyl ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Thanks again

    Cheers guys.

Neil, the file was really big, so the quality was pretty spot on. I’m no expert regarding compression etc, but it looked fine. Thanks though.

Alan, I tried to attach the design, but it’s 2.4 MB, too big to upload here. Thanks for offering to take a look though

How annoying, bet you couldn’t believe it when you saw that van.

I imagine it’s quite hard getting customers to pay money/deposit up front before a design is even done, that’s the problem.

You never stop learning on this job.

    Hi Bob

I have the SP540i, as the other replies say, it certainly can do that. But, after using a Summa (cut only machine) for 10 years, I’ve found that the Roland doesn’t cut that great.

Having said that, it is a very good machine, I’m sure you wouldn’t regret buying one.

    Cheers

if signs come down in the likes of the weather Scotland is getting today, then its an act of god and the insurers should will pay out. note how i said “should” :lol1:

anyway, in severe weather, signs will come down, just like anything else and we cannot be expected to replace or re-fit for free. i wouldnt anyway.

the trouble with for sale & to let signage is its often manufactured from the likes of correx. which will rip and burst in the winds we are getting today. so they could be fixed into concrete on anchor bolts, it doesnt mean they will be safe and sound.
other V-type projecting for sale signs, if not made of correx, then its cheap thin board and can sometimes weigh a bit. I in no way mean “your” signs, but any i take down when installing shop fascia and the like are often very roughly fitted. i.e. the last one i took down had 6 inch nails thru the sign into metal trim, some even hammered thru the face of acrylic.
granted these signs are temporary, i get that part, but still, they also must comply to a level of health and safety in the chance they come down and hit someone.

anyway, just talking in general here mate, not directed at you in any way.

    Hi Robert

Yes, I’ve seen some pretty shoddy boards (not ours) erected over the years. We now use concrete screws to fit the wood batton to brick, then ‘screw’ (torque screws up ladders, god-send) the framed correx boards to the batton. We always (personally, quite obsessivelly) make sure they are rock solid before leaving them.

Before correx was introduced, I believe all of this style signs were framed hardboard. I really don’t know how they managed!

    Thanks for the reply ๐Ÿ™‚

December 8, 2011 at 10:20 am in reply to: Heaters for workshop and office

Having only had my wide format printer since September, I’m now discovering what affects the cold/damp is having. Poor prints due to curly wurly vinyl, generally poor results. The printer is in an office within a 1500 sq.ft. unit, that has a not got a door on it (the office) at the moment!

So, I’ve bought a small oil filled convector radiator. It’s pretty good, but I’ve also bought a huge roll of insulation because there’s gaps everywhere, and fit a door of course! I’m hoping my new insulated room with luxury-delux heater should do the trick!

Nick maybe it’s down to the way you install them, Like Gavin I used to get asked to install these and the money the companies are prepared to pay doesn’t make it worth doing unless you are dealing with a lot of companies so when you go to an area your not fitting just one board.
Don’t think some people who fit them take a lot of time over it, couple of six inch nails through a facia seems to be how some do it.

    Hi Martin,

I’m pretty obsessed with fixing them properly, it doesn’t matter how long I take, and how many fixings (screws) I use, I always worry when there’s strong winds around. Better to be like that, than to not worry at all, I guess.
