  • How to fit a sign without drilling? Help needed, please?

Posted by Phill Fenton on September 3, 2015 at 1:02 pm

I have been asked to fit a sign onto a new build unit – the landlord is insisting that any signage fitted should not damage the building – by that I’m assuming they don’t want any screw fixings. I’ve never been 100% sure about using a double sided tape alone to fit a sign (what if the cladding coating fails) I always prefer a mechanical fixing – so not sure what to advise apart from walk away?

    Any suggestions?

Be interested to hear replies. I was asked the same thing a while back and couldn’t come up with a solution

On advice from this forum I have used Siroflex, but I use it only for small stuff, and never where it could cause damage if it fell.

Otherwise, vinyl, paint, or walk away Phill!
This one will come back to bite you.

I suppose you have already considered this , but thought I would mention drilling into the mortar only. Easily repaired if the sign comes down someday.

I had. Similar request from a library that was a listed building I ended up with posts and signs placed very close to the walls if it’s clading I would use vinyl directly to the surface or just walk away plenty more jobs out here without the headache

I would look to see if you can utilize any existing bolts holding the cladding etc will sometimes mean fabricating brackets, straps etc

Presumably the cladding IS fitted with mechanical fixings. Can the existing positions be hijacked / doubled up to mount say an angle bracket or a composite panel that you DO trust to VHB the job to?

Or do the "OK, YOU tell me how to fit it then and sign this waiver"

We were asked by a council officer if Velcro could be used to fit a sign…..

Bull sh1t baffles brains, quote BS559

Quote 1 sign taped to the wall, service life 60 mins

Quote another sign, mechanically fixed, service life 5 years with minimal difference.

I would suggest fixing an angle bracket and installing a sign tray, or sign frame, then leave the bracket/frame in place when they move for the next Tennant.

An estate near us has all the units with the same size frames pre fitted.

Can’t you just lick the back of it and hold it firm for 5 mins…..get the cheque then leg it…

that’s 3mm foamex of course, ACM may need two people to lick it.

Hope its of some help.. 😉

I was asked to fit some correx marketing boards to units, using DS tape as they didn’t want to damage the cladding.

Anyway, someone ripped one of the signs off, leaving tape/residue on the cladding. The landlord then went mental, demanding the tape removed/cleaned up ASAP. I wish I’d have walked away from that one.

Seconding what david said, perhaps suggest a solution that can be reused by any new tennant. Angle for trays or panatrim frame? Also means they can have uniformity across all the units in terms of size and position of each sign.
