  • Adding vinyl letters to painted indoor wall, application tape??

Posted by Nick Minnery on May 11, 2021 at 2:19 pm

    Hi guys

I will be applying some vinyl letters to a standard interior wall (painted emulsion). I’m a bit concerned about the application tape pulling the paint off the wall.

    Any tips/advice would be appreciated

    Regards

    Nick

    Hi Nick,

No such thing as a basic emulsion wall nowadays, modern paints have plenty of problem causing additives.

If it’s the app tape your worried about, apply a small piece in a discreet area, maybe behind a door near the bottom of the wall. This should give you an idea of how well the paint has keyed to the wall

We are just straight up honest with the customer. When the quote comes in it’s normally for a newly painted wall. So I just tell them it’s like a low tac masking tape, but has been known to take the odd flake off, it’s not ones fault, just how it is. Have what’s left in the tin on hand. End of the day if they think your talking rubbish and bad at your job then they will choose someone else and there’s at least a 50% chance of it happening to them and then you will look like a guru and re-gain there business.

Be more worried about the vinyl sticking Long term. As Graham says above paints full **** that hates vinyl these days. We either send a bit out in the post to the customer or take one when measuring up and pop it on. It will stay no bother, but in a few days it might curl or find a new home on the floor.

Having nothing but trouble nowadays with new paints. Have tried all sorts but some seem to stay and others have dropped off before we have even got back to the workshop. In fact the app tape sticks to the wall better than the vinyl in some cases.

You’re right to be concerned about the possibility of pulling paint off the wall but I agree with the others here that an even bigger problem is that many modern paints prevent regular vinyl’s from sticking. The last time I had this problem I switched instead to Vion VP5000 series High Tack print vinyl from William Smith which solved the issue I was having at the time. Make sure you do a test application first in a discrete area before committing to a lot of work that may fail

We only use high tack for wall text now – Arlon 8200.

Thank you for all the replies. If cut a sample of vinyl to test, along with application tape. Fingers crossed!

    Cheers👍
