• My first solo wrap

Posted by Kev Taylor on March 6, 2013 at 9:35 pm

I have done full and part vehicle wraps quite a few times now but have always done them with a well experienced freelance wrapper.
This white Fiesta van is my first full solo wrap using Oracal Wrapping Vinyl, and i’m loving how its going.
Started at lunchtime today and will be completed tomorrow.
The UKSB wrapping course i attended in Glasgow in Feb has gave me a lot more confidence and knowledge. Definitely the type of work for me.

    Kev 😀

Look forward to seeing the finished pictures 🙂

Its always a great feeling standing back and looking at something, especially when its been done from start to finish by yourself 🙂

    Nice work Kev!

I’d like to learn this too. The thing that concerns me, is removing all trim/handles etc, it’s all guess work, to me anyway!

Removing trims etc is actually very easy, a basic tool kit from halfords (about £100) will cover almost everything you need tbh.

Loads of info online about where screws are etc on each panel bla bla bla…

Always handy to have a local garage on your side tho, pay them to detrim for you if your not confident etc.

Looks pretty good Kev but I would have used avery supreme :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

Nick, when you do the wrap course they actually suggest that you don’t get involved removing trim etc yourself.
Either let the customer organise it themselves or find a local garage/repair shop that you can call in to do it for you. Takes them a fraction of the time as they do it on a regular basis plus if anything gets broken then it’s down to them to fix it & not you.

We personally prefer 3M Wrap, but then William Smith trained me, and my colleague was trained by James Deacon. First class training in both instances but once my colleague got his hands on the 3m stuff he’s never looked back. Never done a full colour change ourselves, it’s mostly printed wraps we do, different set of challenges I can imagine.

May I enquire who is your local freelance wrapper? Sometimes when we’re really busy it would be a good option if someone could come in to help out as was the case last week when we had a van sitting all week but physically couldn’t start it until the end of the week due to slippage from another job and the customer needed it back for Saturday 8am – the stress.

Cheers Stuart & Martin. Of course there is the option of getting a professional to remove the trim, I never really considered that!

And yes, Google is a wonderful thing, how did we manage before?!

Jamie, the Avery reference was a personal joke aimed at Kev who said he was going to talk his boss into using the more expensive film because it was easier & quicker to work with.

Nick if you can find a local Coachbuilders then it’s worth going to see them to try & work out a suitable rate or fixed price so you know exactly what the costs are going to be when the customer asks for a quote.
You may be able to get a good price based on the volume of work you would be able to put their way.

Great to hear you are putting training into practice Kev, brilliant mate. so many listen but never take on board, never mind put into practice so its very encouraging to see both quickly exercised soon after training.

As you will remember, and as martin says, UKSG do NOT recommend removing parts yourself.

Again, great to see someone putting into practice what they have learned after UKSG training.

    please keep posting your progress…

    P.S.
please email me at rob@uksignboards.com because your training should have come with "free UKSG membership" and i see your account does not have this.
