  • What sort of mobile phone do you have?

Posted by Robert Lambie on September 2, 2005 at 10:09 pm

I have just bought myself a new mobile phone/PDA sort of thing. Which for me is an achievement in itself, as I have never done this before. Always works mobiles phones I use. anyway.. I would like to ask anyone/ everyone… what mobile do you have? Why have you chosen it and how good is it?
My main reason for change is I continually get contacted by suppliers asking me this and that, more so who is, isn’t uksg members. Or members calling asking for a supplier and i need my computer for that? 😕 so I thought…. ok rob, lets get this all on one mobile system and went for a pda sort of mobile phone thingy… anyone ele got any advice , thoughts?

is it the Orange XDA’s ? Bruce (collegue) has an XDA and links it with outlook, if you have the right Exchange (mail server) then you can link direct. I am hoping later this year to have linked his in fully to the mail server so he can get internal email, see contacts and the callendar for appointments wherever he is in the world.

The older blackberry’s are really good for email as it is basic and has qwerty. With the blackberry you can set up forwarding emails etc.

I myself have a knackered small rubbishy nokia that if it smashed I wouldn’t care. Not got into the phone lark, however I think for a sign maker and someone who is meeting clients, a camera phone is a useful tool if you forget to take a camera to record a site.

For the last month I have been the proud owner of a Motorola V3. I like my phones small, light and ideally with a flip front. It is only 12mm thick and fits unobtrusively into a shirt or trouser pocket. I am very pleased with it

Because of the way I use a pda I prefer to keep it as a separate item, but I can still enjoy the benefits of an integrated machine via the wonders of bluetooth.

So far we only have one model named … ?

    Gadget freak

Got a Sony P910i for work based around the sony clie pda it is the daddy, links to outlook etc and works with push email, means you can get the header (person and subject) of your emails then choose to download to the phone, best part is that it remains on the server and downloads normally to your normal mail programme. Our mail is through BT on a pop3.

Got a k750 for going to the pub small light great pics.

ahhh i see you have same one as me then john? 😉

to be honest im not intrested in all the mods it has, i really need it for its emailing, and database etc. the option of linking to the site dierect anywhere in world. its amazing how well the site looks on such a small screen though? 😀

for day to day use wi use this one

its brill, but find the new one a great advantage for what i do these days… has it all if i didnt have to run the site too… 😕

    does anyone else use similar?
im really itrested in what you have to say here as i am constantly running out of ways to organsie the site, our sign business and other ventures we are involved with. 😕

I had the Sony P900 about 18 months ago. Had it all hooked up to the internet and e-mail etc…never used it..
I now havw a motorola RAZR in silver and i have found it to be the dogs danglies. Very small and compact but with a large and bold screen, just for those with failing eyes.
Upgrade time is Feb and no doubt i will get a new one then.

Rob, I can guarantee you that you will lose at least 1 of your 2 stylus. When you do give me a shout, I have a couple of spares knocking about

I can call people on my phone, and that’s about it. Oh, and it does something called text messaging. I think that’s something that teenagers do!

I can just imagine Phill using that phone: “Operator, get me Livingston 123”

i am seriously losing the plot between the site and my day to day business though. hense why the big delve into something new.

until last month i hated mobile phones, now i have to make them a way of life. down side is i have actually a medical problem with them and i really don’t like placing them to my head for anything over 2-3 minutes 😕

Phill, is that a phone in yer pocket or are you just happy to see me? 😳
I have an old crappy Nokia cuz my really cool LG flip phone fell into the Allegheny River whilst I was canoeing.
I even had it in a zip-lock bag!
I hate it, but I am too cheap to buy a new one.
I have Verizon, and they suck.
Tried to replace this phone, if I bought a 2-year contract it would be $40,
but to buy my old phone outright it was $150.
My bill, with the in-network plan, is about $50/month.
But to call Stevo in Canada, I had to have a special International plan that cost much more.
    It’s a necessary evil.

    Rob…

That’s a great phone. I had it’s precursor, the P800, when they first came out and it performed brilliantly. However, it’s size was what convinced me to go with separates!

Just one point though, what sort of data contract do you have? It must cost a fortune if you are going to keep accessing the site on it.

    John…

What do you do when you go to the pub with your k750? Do you swap the sim card or do you have another number? A private line in the pub! Now that would be impressive!

I suspect Rob will get the site done in a ‘no-images/no-aviatars version’, that will keep the costs down for his mobile 😕

Phill, We put a phone just like that on a hanging sign for a mobile phone shop once!

well, ringtones are not my thing.. as long as it shakes that will do.

Will consider a phone sometime but I prefer BT lines.

Also considering Skype and a bluetoothed PDA to a pocket PC. But not sure about the technology just yet and any additional costs.

had a motorola razr V3 for about 4 months now, not a bad phone functionally, i dont use itmuch for pics as i always carry a 4mp camera anyways !

size wise it’sgreat, flat as hell so fits nicely into a pocket when you don’t want to have a phone on yer belt,

only draw back is the predictive text system, nowherenearas good as nokia’s which i almost exclusively owned in the past,

still keep my 6210! nokia as a back-up with a payg card in, and still keep my 7110i matrix phone !! only cos it was replaced with new about a week before my contract was up, i figure that being still boxed that it might oneday be worth something again !

if vodafone hadnot beenso up their own **** i’d’ve gone for the 8910i titanium cased jobby, i dont want all the kack thats on these phones now-a-days, but sice the wouldnt give me the phone i wanted (8910i), even though they still advertise it yet its never available i just went for the phone i knew would cost them the most !!!

I already knewed the phone coz a big friend already had one but that’s more or less what was goin to happen to me, when i reserved mine in january they told me that probably i was goin to get it only in October 😮
Fortunately in a small shop near me someone ordered one and didn’t came to pick it up on the proper day and the lady on the balcony was a friend of mine 😉 . They are very hard to find here.

Talking of phones……my contract’s up for renewal soon (with Vodafone). The other day I had someone phone me from “3”, offering me a really good deal. I was very tempted until my husband’s friend said that he took out a contract with them but the coverage was really bad and he kicked up a fuss and had to cancel the contract.

When I said this to the lady from “3”, she said that they have got a deal with O2 and the coverage is about 99% now.

Does anyone else use the “3” network??

I’ve got an o2 XDA 11s. It’s fantastic! Wouldn’t be without it now. I don’t use it as a phone (use my nokia for most voice calls) as its bulky but its got fab features and from being a text phobic, i now dont mind texting as i can use the wand. Camera is excellent, video pretty good. I use it mainly to sync with my calender on my pc as i was forever forgetting appointments. There are some excellent downloads available for it at http://www.handango.co.uk – i’ve got several which are invaluable to me, including a dictionary which speaks the word also; London street maps including the tube & rail system; excellent games for when i’m bored. It does have a pull out keyboard but i find it easier to use the screen one.
I have just got a 1gb memory card so that i can store music, instead of also taking my ipod out.

Serious bit of kit, and my husband wants it – but its MINE

o2 XDA II is great bit of kit, however earlier today my boss was talking to me and he said batteries are a bit weak now, had to use another phone.

Take a look at the tarrifs Alison on “3” before you make up your mind. A friend has it and they are a little steep and I understand 3 is practically video phone or something like that

They can’t wait till the 13 months is up so they can dump them. No coverage.

    Ditto Robert

I can get my email, but i found that generally i need to reply with files attached so its better to email replies from the office.

I got over the battery problem by getting another one and alternating. Also, i try not to keep too much in the programme memory but rather on the storage card as i found that it slowed it down too much.

I am obsessed with backing up the data as so much is on it, i would cry if it crashed!

o2 have some excellent deals at the moment. My daughter has just gone onto the ‘online 500 extra’ tarriff. This is giving 1000 (yes 1000!) offpeak ANY network & landline minutes & 1000 text messages per month. Also the best bit is its £25 per month and with only a 30 day contract NOT 12 months! Better be quick as its a limited time apparently.

  • Alison Falzon

    Member

3 must be desperate for business then!

That’s why they’re offering 500 minutes anytime, any network for £15 – 18 month contract AND the first month is free….

It obviously won’t be possible to use the minutes if the coverage is so poor. Think I’ll give that one a wide berth then……

My supplier is a very good friend and he flatly refused to sell me a 3 phone. He said if he did I would never forgive him. 😀

I’ve had a mass of phones. As a freelance cameraman I was on call 24/7.

I hate them now with a passion. My wife keeps asking me where our mobile is now.

Last thing I remember is throwing it at the windscreen of the car. I do not know what I did with it after that.

But I tell you what. I never drop out any more and the bill has reduced enormously.

I’d recommend a windscreen dash for anyone who has had enough.

I change my phone every year at the end of each contract. I’m not too fussed about it as long as I get good coverage. I’ve got a Motorola E398 at the minute and it’s a great phone (especially my Dangermouse ringtone 😀 ), had it almost a year now so will be changing again soon. I’m with TMobile and their coverage is good.
I’d never have a 3 phone, I know someone who has and swears that he would never go near them again, they offered him one of those cheap deals already mentioned but it’s not worth the heartache, their service is so poor.
