  • would it be possible to use some epoxy or urethane to dome?

Posted by Vitor Brito on March 29, 2005 at 9:46 pm

I’m looking to find the best way to achieve one special effect, but i don’t know if it as been tried before. And i’m not sure i’ll be able to explain it correctly.

If i laser engrave a relief on a piece of wood would it be possible to use some epoxy or urethane to dome it making a effect like relief and emboss at same time, i’m wondering how would it look as i’ve been asked to propose something really diferent for a key holder. If someone as tried something similar i would like to see a picture of it if possible.

Hope i could explain what’s going in my tricky mind.

    Thx in advance.

Are you talking about lets say engraving all around a letter A and letting the A stand up form the background and then doming the top of the A?
It can be done , tho you will have a nightmare doming.

I’m not sure, but i think i’m thinking the opposite from what you said Rodney, i tried roughly to represent in an image what i’m saying, being the darker wood the engraved part and then the doming filling the engraved to it’s edge, but it would had to be enough to stand out if you know what i mean.

Chris i’m not sure it would have this effect i’m trying, as i’ve never done anything similar before can u assure it would look like the image below?

    Thx, guys for your opinions.

Hiya , it wont work cos the doming resin requires a surface and edge to build the dome , pouring it into a depression or a sunken area does not give rise to a dome even if you pour a LOT in , it either “sinks” (IE the edges are higher then the middle of the dome) or it just spills over. If the A was standing bproud of the background it would work
We actually dome pex cut letters and they look amazing compared to just a straight undomed cut perspx letter.

Thx Rod, it’s a shame it won’t work because i had already a few other similar aplications lined up in my mind, 😉

another doubt i have, could the epoxy or urethane be aplied to some mould where you previously spread some paraffin or similar in a way that when it is dry you could unmould it like you would do with a cake or a pudding? Getting in the end just the shape of the mould?

    Thx

Yeh , thats easy , we do it a lot , you get a moulding rubber called RTV (room temperature vulcanising) and you make a master and spray it with mould release , you pour the RTV silicon (its 2 part) around it (im not going into the nitty gritty of split lines etc) and you end up with a cured Silicon mould that you can pour all sorts of stuff in like casting resin , polyester , urethanes , epoxies to cast (even lead and pewter)
You can even use 80% brass/bronze/copper powder and 20% resin to get a metal casting without having to pour in molten metal (called a cold casting – looks and feels and tarnishes etc just like a solid metal)
Its really pretty simple and any co that supplies the RTV silicon moulding material should have extensive literature and broschures on how to make moulds.
The problem of course is to get the master – but you can use many materials to make it , even stuff like wax , chemical wood , perspex , brass and so forth

Thx again Rod, i’ll try to find any suppliers of RTV silicon in my area, and give it a try, i’ll keep you posted about it or make a few more questions to clarify anything i might be missing now. 😉

    Thx
