Buy a projector and make an evening of it, more fun than all huddling around some glossy pics! think i might pop round my mums later and bring her and the projector over for tea!

    Sorry Hugh
I have to disagree, their are literally Billions of photos, slides etc, molding away in old boxes and suitcase that could be on something like photo-bucket,
As you know! Today Digital photographs can have all of the details in exif data,
Old photographs are only as good as the memory of the people who still remember the faces on the photos,

When that generation dies! so does the faces on the photographs
Then that photograph becomes another casualty of don’t know who this is so bin it,

Years ago photography was such an expensive hobby! if someone had taken the time to photograph something then it must have been important to them,
And if it’s in your possession then it should be important to you!
After all it should give you an idea of your history,

And who your going to finish up looking like when your old and decrepit, I’m already their apparently 🙄

Just because it’s a photograph of someone in your past, doesn’t mean it’s of no interest to anyone else,

It would seem that in today’s society? if you have a decent SLR and just start taking pictures willy-nilly some would be traffic//warden is going to approach you and ask you what your doing,

After all you might have an Exocet missile hidden in your 500mm lens,
Heaven forbid that you might actually just want to take pictures,
    My other Tee-shirt reads

    I am a Photographer
    Not a terrorist

Shit sorry guys, Were the hell did this rant come from.

Oh! I know, some Idiot in George Square asking me what I was doing taking pictures of buildings at, Jaunty angles ( I like that phrase)
OK even longer rant I’m going to stop now 😀

For a start Jill, I don’t think you need quite as big a sign as that to direct people to your front door 😉

As for your door colour I think I’d stick with green as it compliments the brickwork and you could pick out the panels and beading in tints or shades of green,

    For a start Neil!

I cannot believe some of the Crap you lot are using on your Pc’s

Ok Two options One Free And one Paid.

    Free
    Microsoft Security Essentials,
As Good as if not better than a lot of the free and paid for stuff out their inc, avg, Mcaffe, Norton,

    Paid
    Eset Nod32
As never let a virus in, In over ten years, Gets top marks from all of the major company’s

However whatever anitviral stuff you have on your system must be completely removed, that includes checking on their websites for uninstall tools Avg and Norton dont like to be uninstalled and will put up a bit of a fight

However if your pcs at the point it likely that you’ll never get rid of the spyware and crap on your system as it could be embedded to far into your system, it may have to be a reinstall of windows unfortunately.

Microsoft do a version of Office for the Mac i know i have a copy some were. And it was a free download when i got it straight from the MS website,
Worth maybe checking the ms knowledge base.
And As far as i can remember their is a free Mac utility for running windows xp 7 on a mac but it needs to be a Intel chip-set IE a newer mac and a fairly powerful one at that, and its also free from the apple website

6 months later they eventually got wind that he owned a bathroom shop, travelled from northern ireland to england=, went straight into the shop and in front of all the customers demanded the money. Got a sob story and decided to take matters into their own hands:

    Just a thought.

That MOBO will handle 24Gb of 3 channel RAM…W7 SHOULD utilise all of that too.

I’d be sorely tempted to drop the small high speed drives in favour of a standard (larger) drive for the OS & programs and bump the RAM levels up way beyond 4Gb.

I have (with a LOAD of RAM installed) turned off the swap file / scratch disk …as let’s face it – nobody works with files bigger than a couple of Gb..do they?

Silly fast speed as near zero disk access.

    Hi David
Yes! your correct win7 will handle any amount of Ram,
    But only in 64bt…
32bt win7 as per vista and late editions of xp will only use the guts of 4Gb regardless of how much Ram you actually have installed.

I’m actually running 32Gb of Ram on Win7 32bt, But here’s the trick I know what I’m doing and know how to bypass certain windows restrictions and utilize The Ram to hold programs in permanent memory,
For instance Adobe ills. Flexisign. and all the other programs I’m using are fully loaded and ready to go, As fast as i can click the mouse button..
As for swap files, Well a partitioned folder in it’s own drive makes things even faster I recently had a file 120Gb Nightmare to deal. But they do happen ,

Win7 64Bt I would think for the next couple of years is out of the question, Unless all of the programs and drivers are already supported,

My Instinct is still to go with
Win7 32Bt would be my suggestion,
But here’s the thing Check with the software company’s whose programs you use and find out if they support Win7 if they do, Go for it
If not weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of going to win7
You know you have XP to fall back on

In-fact wife’s just back from Blackpool and a taxi driver told her, That the new game a lot of kids are playing now, Is to try to get run over by a bus or car and they can then claim thousands from the drivers insurance, saying it was their faulty, That’s why I now carry a hi-def video camera in the car and cab with me its on record all of the time, That is until I do something wrong then it gets blanked..lol

Win7 is the way forward as of last June xp is no longer actively supported by Microsoft

When I say actively supported what I mean is that they will do a fix for anything that puts the system at risk!

but will no longer support it with regards to new products coming out,

Vista was a bad o/s in as such as they released it with far to many problems,
    However Win7 is Vista Fixed!
I was one of the lucky ones and was offered win7 in it’s Alpha testing stage and was lucky enough to be given a blue badge as a developer for Microsoft
I was in at the ground floor with win7 and have to say that even in the early stages it was far better than vista or even Xp in it’s hay-day!
so yes! If your programs will run on it without going into compatibility mode then go for win7 Pro ultimate,

This will allow you to tweak the system a good bit if you have to use compatibility mode or customize your computer in any way,

As for your ssd bare in mind that a really good 500gb sata H/D should only cost you £40 at most the ssd will be costing you the guts of £120 £130
And this is at best only the second generation of ssd drives,
I would stick the spare £90 in my pocket and invest it in an Intel chip,
don’t forget that with file swapping your 100GB ssd will only be 98GB and then take away at least one third for various windows activates that and the fact that you should leave that amount of your drive clear anyway., Your left with at best 60GB for your programs not a lot if your using a couple of biggish programs, Don’t forget these programs will take up a fair bit of ssd drive when their running, you could pretty quickly hit some VM problems and windows really doesn’t like them,
If you wanted to upgrade to ssd say this time next year when prices have dropped and their a bit better say 4th 5th generation it shouldn’t be a problem to image your C:\ Drive and install it onto a ssd drive

As for networking your system shouldn’t be a problem with win7
If this is all a bit off putting you could just stick good old WinXP in it
At least you know that it works,
Sorry if this is all the more confusing for you!

But the local PC shop wont have your best interests at heart!
They will try to sell you the best system that will give them the biggest profit.

Sorry should have mentioned that anything I’ve bought PC parts wise I have got from this mob http://www.Aria.co.uk look out for their deal 4 the day

    Hi Dan
If you using some of the older signage products 99% of them were never designed for 64bt
I take it that your thinking of win7 64bt, Bare in mind that a lot of well know products are still not supported properly and many are still in beta testing with their drivers,

Some of the lesser know products will never be supported by win7 as it’s up to the company that make the cutter printer etc to develop the 64bt software… And most don’t bother for an older machine!

I would maybe hold off on the 64bt side as the lack of compatibility out weighs the performance gains,
In-fact check to make sure that whatever software your using is supported,
No good buying a spanking new system! Only to find out that none of your programs will run on it,
Also I have had over the years many many systems amd intel mac
I would always go for the Mac every-time!

However a lot of the programs I use today are not available for the mac.
I would stay well clear of the Amd and always go for Intel

I know someone on here’s going to have a go at me for this, But to be honest if Amd was as good as they make out!
Amd chips would be flying the space shuttle instead of Intel,

    Spec looks ok
But I would lose the Amd and go for Intel
The ssd maybe a good investment, but at the moment your paying a premium for it

You may find that a good 500gb sata H/d could leave it standing, However as you don’t list any access times that remains to be seen.

Asus are very good boards although I’m not familiar with this one, os their should be no problems their,
As for your 2nd h/d good idea to have a big drive, But eggs in one basket springs to mind, make sure that you have at the very least one of two other backups, one off site if possible Gott a go running out of time Ray:)

What I finished up doing was to buy a 19" LCD touchscreen off flea-bay,
I’m making up a little Jig for it so it will drop down into my workbench and then tilt at the correct angle for me when I want to use it,

At the moment Ive tried it free standing and for me it works very well,
Although it certainly doesn’t have the features of the Wacom used with win7 and its touchscreen capability’s its as near as dam-it,
Cost just a tad under £175 So £800 less than the wacom better in my pocket than theirs Ray:)

    Hi PJ
A new system could cost you £500 plus,, 4Gb of ram should only cost you £60

I’m running an older system than that with Roland’s Versaworks and cut choice and Flexisign8 with No problems, However i do have a high end Graphics card and 4 Gbs of DDR memory. And 3 1Tb h/ds
Sounds like your system could maybe just do with an upgrade,
As memory is so cheap now I would maybe consider trying a memory upgrade first, Depending what your operating system is IE xp 2 GB should do it,
if your running vista or win7 32bt Then you could try 4GB although Vista and Win7 wont use the 4GB it should use about 3 and a bit,

Win7 64bt you can load up with as much ram as you like, But is gets a bit redundant after 4 GB, Unless you know how to set it up properly.
Make sure that if you do upgrade that the ram matches,

    Here’s the trick Have nothing!
I mean nothing else on your system,

Have only your operating system and your vinyl/ print software,

In-fact as I run windows I go into win programs and pretty much uninstall anything that i don’t need including the games and a lot of redundant windows add-ons crap Ray:)

Maybe consider getting the Mark Rugen tutorial DVD As i found that an Invaluable aid to getting to know flexi.

And a bit more information would help
IE computer setup, cutter printer setup,
Do you have a print and cut machine or are you using more than one machine surprised SAI didn’t throw in a DVD or a tutorial of some sort.however you need to make sure that you have your cut print machine recognized by both your operating system and flexi
in flexi you need to go to file
    then Rip & Print.
this should then bring up a dialog box asking what cutter printer your using select you machine,
you should then have a Rip & Print box open,
go to advanced once you have setup your output settings etc you will see your contour button about half way down the page next to the Driver options tab, if this is grayed out then your not setup properly
Sorry ran out of time have to go

Phil, you will be hard pressed to get a really bright orange on a CMYK or CMYKlclm. I have a client that used oracal bright orange for years, and then he wanted me to supply printed signs and get as close as I could. He wasn’t satisfied with anything, neither was I, because the orange always had a muddy or dull appearance.

That is one of the reasons I changed to CMYKOG. That, and my other big client uses a bright green colour.

Been there, done that, got the shirt 🙁

Just wondered the advantages and disadvantages of using CMYKOG over CMYKLCLM as my Roland uses these colors, So whats the advantage of using OG instead of LCLM

    Jill thanks
As a guide line I was way off price wise,
Charging him him a lot less than as been quoted up to now,
What i didn’t consider properly was the amount of vinyl and time to weed As I don’t usually stock Mac-Tac 8300. which is what i planned on using.
But have some, That I got thrown in when I stocked up my 9800pro vinyl
I usually use Mac-Tac 9800pro, But it seemed a bit like overkill as the item wont last much over a year anyway.

    But point taken Jill.
By the way you sure grew up quick,
Last time I looked you were a 18 months old, On your profile Pic :lol1:

PS. Thanks to the Pm’s that confirmed I was way off price.

    Hi Guys
Now this post is actually very Interesting,
As I’m now starting to get into Digital printing.
I have never considered color blending, Which I would guess this is what this is,
Maybe a certain published Aurthur (CoughPhil)Who likes to get pictures taken of him in the bath and spread all over the Net And in some well Dodgy Forums Should maybe consider a Signage Digital print book with this information in it,
It would also be help-full to someone like myself, If a thread was started in a private section of the forum were we could check the settings for a certain color,
Now I know that this isn’t an exact science, But a flavor or near enough to the color would help!
    Nice one :thanks2:

OK! For me the short end of a very long story was that a chap we shall call him that for the sake of me getting banned of off this group,

Owed me a few hundred £££ quite a few actually several of them to be honest,
Anyways after a few weeks of calling and getting nowhere my calls started to go blank on his number,

So I had two choices 1. forget about it,(Yeah Right) or 2 get my money by any means necessary,
    Option 2 is this!

Find out as much about the guy as you possibly can you may have to become a detective, I did.

    Check out, Past address’s
    Where his home address is,
His parents and in-laws address if he as any,

Anywhere you think that you can find an address for him, bank account local bank details the lot,
Once you enough information on him send him a nice registered Post letter also email and text and mms message telling him that all of the address’s you have on record for him,

And list them on the letter.

Can expect a visit from the local debt collectors or bailiffs with regards to the outstanding debt,

And that he as 48 hours from the date of the letter to make payment in full in cash, money order IE postal orders or paypal. Believe me the last thing he wants is his dear old Mum getting the bailiffs around her door or the In-laws know that he owes money,The "Ahem" collectors are allowed to mention that the call is with regards to an unpaid debt. and that they may call several times to make sure he’s home..

This as worked every time for me and I have had to do it 4 times up til now,
It as never ever got to the part of anyone knocking on someones door…

    Yeah I know I’m a bad boy 👿

    quote Liam Pattison:

Once i advertised my mate as a ladyboy escort on the internet just to wind him up. You could try that, it might not get you your money back but he will probably get a flood of strange callers. :lol1:

Then do something else with the doors maybe the logo thing.

    Hi Peter
Yes! In hindsight that sounds a bit contradictory,
    The problem is
    1. I never fiddle with things ( I always get caught)
    If I break it,
I would have the good grace to admit that i fucked-up! And ask for help.

    2. I worked in house on the most basic of vinyl jobs and have never had to use flexi to it’s potential, So have never really looked at the program or had to install anything as the system was already setup for us,
I bought the computer as is, when the company decided to out-source it’s vinyl signage,
My thoughts where that flexi had it’s own fonts engine and it did everything in the program itself,

Going into the flexi directory their are several places to put font’s, my question as I’m not familiar with how flexi makes use of the fonts or what folder to put them in,
What I didn’t want to do was cause more problems by installing into the wrong directory, I think that Where do I put the fonts was a relevant question.
As for my it background, Well it was assembly language And as that programming is not used as much as C+ I pretty much gave it up….

    Hi all
    An update,
Thought i would redo my work area as I had to pretty much demolish the computer area, after the Pratt incident, Decided to shift my DVD, DVD player and books, And move the computer to a better position.
I have a closed locked cabinet for my DVDs, Reference books, and old contacts folders etc.
Anyway opened up a couple of cases only to find that some of the DVDs are missing.
As these are work related, Their not much good to anyone unless your in the trade,
Knew i hadn’t misplaced them as I’m a bit Anal with regards to CD and DVDs and always put them back in their case,
after looking all over the cabinet couldn’t’ find then anywhere, Then the Penny dropped,
Heid the Ba, that’s my new name for him.
Had helped himself to some of my DVDs and software, now normally this wouldn’t be a problem as I don’t mind loaning thing out. as long as I get them back,
But what was more worrying was the fact that a couple of my contacts and customer books where missing, ie names quotes address’s and job’s done, possible return business to Chase up. You know The good will side of a business,
Anyway had no choice but to contact Heid the Ba.
So as I was going past his place thought I would call in and confront Sorry see him,
    Turns out he’s not their
    His Jenny was home,
So I had a chat with her,
Judging from the way we chatted I quickly worked out that she knew nothing about what happened,
Doesn’t supp-rise me as she would have went Ape-shit,
Anyway asked her if, Heid the Ba, ( i didn’t use that name in front of her) Had any tools of mine in the shed
As I needed to do a job and thought that he maybe had some laying in the shed.
As she never goes in their, She told me to help myself,
to say I found one or two things of mine is an understatement.
Tools almost an entire box full of squeegee’s rollers and and sundries
A hard rive i didn’t know was missing full of contacts and quotes
My contacts books 2 of them,
    All of my DVDs,
Plus what was more worrying was a folder of printed out plotters and vinyl equipment from flea-bay and other such like websites,
Looks like he was getting ready to set himself up in the Signage business,

Now that doesn’t bother me, After all competition is the spice of life,
It makes you put your best effort into a job,
what gets me is the fact that he was going to try to poach all of my customers, I earned these peoples business,
Anyway removed my property including the flea-bay stuff. Let him search for that lot again,
Jenny asked me if I had got what I was looking for, Told her I had and that when he gets back to let him know and Rosie wants to have a chat, (He’s scared of her) So am i sometimes, lol.

At home! I discovered he had been scanning the contacts books and putting them on the hard-drive, He also had copies of all of the DVDs on the drive, I think that what he had been doing was taking stuff home that I wouldn’t miss and copying them onto the hard-drive,

    Told Rosie!
what i found, She’s going to see him? The funeral is next week,

Contacted all of my customers via E-mail and told them that an ex employ had taken my contacts book, not to worry as it was only business name and telephone number which is true. And to let me know if anyone from a signage company, Contacted them with regards to a job they should refer them back to me,

    Family Huh!

    Morning Jason

You might find a couple of searches on Youtube very useful for some of your research. E.g. you can watch a Graphtec CE5000 in action using registration marks etc etc.

    John

Argee with John on this one, Youtube is fantastic for giving someone a flavour of how a sign cutter works.
But not all of the problems are addressed with regards to setting a cutter up, and any other related problems.
If your just starting out it’s not just the cutter, it’s also the software, And other bits and bobs, and applying the finished producet. Decent software can cost anything from £300 to £3000 depending on what it is you want to do, The bits n bobs, Well my kit box which is fairly basic still stand me £300, And that’s just for doing basic vinyl,

One heads up and I’m not having a go, just giving you a heads up, Pirate software is pretty much, a no no on this site,

Whatever cutter or software you get try to get the seller to throw in a tutorial dvd for the software and cutter you get, Phill Fenton does a fantastic book on setting up a signage business, Well worth the oulay.

This is a fantastic forum and group of Guys N Gals. they will literally bend over backwards to help,
But do your research before asking any questions as it shows a sign of respect to the poeple on here that are willing to help and give up their time to reply to a thread,

I know that when I started out, The help i got from these guys was invaluable,

Your certainly heading in the right direction with the cutters, But do you need a machine as big as that I have 3 machines an old houston 24" whcih still works a Roland 40" and a Crappy chinesse cutter 28" which i’m trying to break before the G/tee runs out. And it wont die. These Crap chinesse Cutters and flea-bay are going to ruin this business.
Anyway good luck with what your doing, And hope to see you at one of the Trade shows…..

Try initiating a thorough boot up..

..that should stop him fiddling with your PC again 😕

Thanks Phill, Thorough boot up. Where him or the Pc…

All sorted, Well when I say all sorted!
reinstalled from last weeks system image

As you can tell from the rant sorry post
I had pretty much stopped anyone from messing about with the system,
After all disabling The DVD in bios then UN-plugging both the Sata cable and power cables from the drive, I would have thought made it pretty useless,
Unless you have a Pratt of a cousin-in-law. mind you he’s stayed well out of the way since this happened,
Honestly what kind of a Pratt, Takes a casing off, puts leads back onto a drive they know nothing about, Just to play a movie that they can’t watch anyway
I knew he’d messed about with it because he had taken out the flexi dongle and put his own usb into the usb slot, luckily he had left the flexi dongle on the work-top
This guy thinks he knows about pc’s and i.t
My background is mainly IT, so i have a better understanding , However he bought a brand new pc about 18 months ago, from a local shop he messed about with it,
it’s never worked properly and is always crashing,
This is not a pc problem it’s him
The guy in the shop he bought it from as told him not to come back or he will charge him to look at it again
I had his pc in my workshop for 2 weeks while he was on holiday, reinstalled and fixed a couple of things he’d messed about with,
Had it running flat out for 10 days not an issue. Anywhere,
He came back off holiday, 3 days later it was back at the shop. he’d messed with it again,
He thinks because he can type: msconfig he knows what he’s doing,

Over the past couple of months he’s been far more trouble than he’s worth And for me that’s sayinmg something. (:)
    Another long rant (hot)
And before anyone asks why did i bother with him 2 things, Family, he was handy for holding the vinyl on any biggish jobs. I’m now just going to leave the backing on and cut it back as i need to…

    She told him it! (chat.)

    quote Harry Cleary:

    😀 😀 😀 now that’s what I call a decent rant!
Maybe try deleting the cousin? Could be arranged, for a small consideration 😀

    quote Phill:

People buy signs to benefit their business.

Can you help me list all of the actions and results that signs produce?

I see the main benefits as follows:-

    1/ Advertising
    2/ To provide instructions
3/ To supply health & safety information
    4/ To provide decoration

Can you think of any other benefits that buying signs bring to your customers?

    You forgot
5/ I own it! I want my name on it.

We use nothing but clear. The stuff from Europoint has a rough texture and really aids dry application.

I haven’t found a good clear app tape yet. If you do a lot of layering you might be better off making a light box?

    Already got one John,
but it’s a pig to work on!
Of course that could be because I’m 6’3" and the light-box is set at 3’3".
Maybe worth chopping myself off at the knee’s to compensate :headbang2:
