Thought I might add my own bit to this,
As i was the winner of the flea-bay auction
i had already spoken to Gareth about this cutter, Without knowing that it was the same one that was on flea-bay,(snipping software) been looking at it all week,
Anyway long story short, Gareth was getting more money else where,
Because Gareth was a uksign-boards member i offered to stand-down after winning the auction as he had been made a far better offer. by someone else,
i expected it to go for the £1400 and didn’t bid that high, Although I wasn’t that far away.
I actually was struggling to pay for this at the £1400 as I explained to Gareth
However in the few hours between our phone call and the auctions end,
I called in a couple of oldish debts, Pissed off one customer, And lost another, by telling them i needed them to pay me asap,
Anyway had a £1000 as the auction ended, Gareth contacted me to say that he had a buyer at the correct money, And would i be willing to let it go,
I agreed as Gareth is a uksign-boards member and a fairly decent chap,
However if he had been Joe blogs selling on eBay,
That would have been a different story,
And i would have been at his door today with the money and a couple of Hairy bikers, (The none cooking kind), Looking for my cutter,
I’m gutted at not getting the cutter,
But if my standing back helps out another sign-boards member, Then so be it.
However Gareth you now owe me a drink, :drink4: And a nice word in certain person’s ears, Also the name of that supplier at your end of the country (you forgot to send it last night) Cheers Ray:)

    quote Gill Harrison:

Hi there………you are right Diamond Grade is a pain to cut and impossible on a standard plotter. If you do need to trim any pieces then turn the diamond grade over and cut from the back. The edge sealing is done ultra sonically.
I did tests with the pens and I don’t rate them. To test we applied the DG to a piece of alli then sealed with the pens and once dry applied a dye to the edges, unfortunately the dye leaked into an unacceptable amount of the cells.
The 3M edge sealing fluid is the correct way to go but yes I’ve known of nail varnish being used and I also like the suggestion of using a strip of clear overlaminate. I find myself looking at the reflective on ambulances etc and a badly sealed product looks shocking.

Hope you have a good flat bed cutter, If your going to cut the diamond grade vinyl it’s a bit of a bitch to cut,
i think! But not sure, That the best way to seal diamond Grade is using a thermal sealer,
Although Ive never used Diamond Grade, The price scares me (oogle)

    Hi All
    I have to admit
I have had more fun with the replies on this thread,
Than with the Twonk that wanted this sign made up,
Anyway quick recap on the sign,
The chap in question, after having a chat with his wife, Spent 5 hours with MS-publisher(shudder) And thought that the sign he made was fantastic,
Just what he wanted Because it was his own work, And perfect in his minds eye. (Glad my eye’s not that bad)
He spent another hour converting it to jpg and 2 hours and 30 sheets of A4 Kodak high quality photo-paper, Printing it out, Not getting it quite right each time.
By this time his Lexmark printer had ran out of ink,
After replacing the ink £39 for 2 cartridges
He still couldn’t figure out why the print quality was so bad,
After all (ahem) it looked great on the screen(looks are very subjective)
Anyway after another Ten sheets of paper,
He decided to look at the printer options and moved the print quality from Draft to what it said on the photpaper box, Best quality archieve photo paper ,
At this point after hitting print, He decided to go and make a coffee
    Guess what!
He printed another Ten pictures at best quality (while he was having coffee) and cost himself another Load of high quality Kodak paper
And about 80% of his new cartridge ink,
So after all this he proudly marches down to, Her-in-doors, And shows off his as yet unmade sign, At which point, She pointed out the spelling mistakes, Crap color’s etc,
At this point, I’m on the floor peeing myself, His wife is in hysterics, As it finally hit home, What a Prat he is,
Of course he never told me any of this,
When he approached me about doing the sign he made a slight comment about someone doing it for him,
My first Question to him, Was did anther sign company do this, As he handed over the photo, at this point i hadn’t actually looked at the picture,
If he had said yes then i was instantly going to knock back the work, (pisses me off no end when people do stuff like that)

Anyway after actually looking at it for about 3 seconds I realized that either his 5 year old had done it or he had done it himself,
In either case I wasn’t going to lose a customer by making a comment like, What A/H did this.
So after going on this forum for advice, and offering the guy 2 other choices and showing him the one Jllbeans did, He was still adamant that he wanted his own done,
At this point I had to remind myself of 2 things
    1. The customer is always Right (even when he’s wrong)
    2. This guy! Was leading to some bigger Job’s, The guys, Brother in law wanted some vans done,
Turns out what the guy was angling for was a couple of free signs, i agreed to this with two proviso’s,
1.He never ever told anyone I did the signs for him. And he provided the foamx, i sent him to someone who i know dosent like to sell foamx over the counter and charges a handling charge, ie hand over the counter an extra £20, The guy commented that he didn’t realize that the materials where so expensive…lol.
2 I actually got the work from his bro in law,

well I am happy to say, I did get the work and he got his signs,
After I did the first van for his in law, I Didn’t want his in law to see the job I did for him. So did one of his vans first.
What springs to mind now is the term,
    Never again

Just been doing a rough calculation and the materials he used to print this off
    at least £50 for Ink
i know the paper he used archive quality £45 box of 50 sheets, If you get the 40% Discount He used a full box?
Coffee £30 this ones for me.
    Printer wear and Tear £25
    His time £5

    makes me shake my head
    or
    Drink more coffee…….

    Hi Ray,

The cutter bar is called an image edge, we’ve got one – its ok but not a patch on our javelin. The joints can step out a little and will cause sticking points as you travel up the bar. Well worth the money though for trimming light weight stuff like digital prints and banners etc. Oh and forget about it for pop ups where accuracy is important.

Most of the suppliers will carry the rollers and brushes you’re after mate, just pick one and try them.

    Andy

    Thanks Andy
    image edge!
That’s the one knew i’d seen it on here but couldn’t remember the name,
I’m only looking for it to cut light foamx and vinyl. nothing more, As i have the guillotine for the heavier stuff

    Hi All

Is it correct that you have to be 64 bit OS to use more than 4Gb RAM??

    Cheers
    Macky

    Hi Macky
I used to be a developer for MS and automatically got the blue-Badge version of Win7 18 months ago this was the in-house version of Win7 and I have to say that it’s been pretty faultless from day one,
The only Issue I have had is the MS VX100 video-live-cam didn’t work until recently, Which is a bit rubbish considering it’s a Microsoft camera. Ironic or what.
Anyway yes 64 bit can handle just about any size of memory that your machine can take,
I have a main system that’s running 2 lots of 32Gb memory, Don’t ask! It was expensive and i was just showing off.

most 32bt wiin7 and XP systems today will only be able to handle 3.5GB or their abouts,
It also depends on system resources ie video, sound, memory, allocation,
also having the latest service pack can affect how any system will run, as any new updates usually free up resources.
I’m currently running on my 5 systems win7 32bt on 4 of them and the fifth is running win7 64bt their are some driver issues on the 64bt side of things but this is because I’m still running some old third party crap. no issues what so ever on win7 32bt with flexi 8.1 artcut, signlab, The only real issue I have is it all runs so dam well I know that when it bu$$ers up it’s going to do it big time….

I have charged £20 a meter quite easily for Oracal 651 in the past (old stuff I dont use anymore) but if its in relation to a job I tell them that its almost impossible to give a price per meter as every job is bespoke and my suppliers price according to the size of my order.

As far as I’m aware, there is no such thing as a bike outline CD, which would make sense to me, as the market would be so small as to make it non-viable.

I did manage to find a vector (side view only) of a GL1800 somewhere on the internet, so I can only suggest that you get Googling. Search for ST1100 though, because they are only known as Pan Europeans on this side of the Atlantic.

yes it is about the Houston dmp60c
My mate thinks he may have solved the problem,
he’s done a self test and it seems top be cutting the vinyl

the only problem is that when he trys to use his software I think its vinylmaster2 or something like that

he cannot get the cutter to work! he as it on LPT1 Spp in bios and as run the plotter setup wizard the dmp 60C is not listed! so he went to the next one up 65C he’s running winXp and has not loaded any drivers for the cutter mainly because he doesn’t have any for it. he’s also using the dongle thing that I got with it although i dont know if it will work for that software, any advice you can give would be a help. thanks Ray

    hi, welcome to the boards…
first question for you… have you ever applied vinyl. if so, how long etc?

if signlab and comes with dongle then go for it, its one of, if not the best sign softwares. just my opinion of course 😀

The easy answer to that is no
However I have helped a chap a few times and know about wetting the panel to allow myself to position the vinyl etc and how to take out air bubbles
iv’e also researched the differnet vinyls ie 3 year 7 year,
and how to use mask and appliacation tape.
I know that if i do this, it’s going to be a long hard learning curve,
But it’s one that I look forward to,as for the lettering the company that sells the vans only really offer simple styles and graphics nothing to fancy which would suit me until i get a handle on how to do this properly… re Ray:)

I also charged them storage and insurance costs, to cover the extra increase in my premeuim,

could someone expalin the pro forma type of invoice is this simply just another way of say COD, only in a legal contract type of way,
as im’m now going to add vinyl lettering to my business, any advice would help…..
