It’s official, I was watching this earlier as it was released. Recently I was talking about running my windows desktop directly on my phone and suggestions of tablets and other things. I knew about this announcement as the rumour mill was rife but not what they would reveal, what a fantastic product and certainly right timing.
As always, where is the corel draw app? or illustrator app?

I would hope that illustrator is on its way or something similar, would be ideal to work on whilst on the move or to show clients work on site. Beats using a laptop. I think this will revolutionise the way we work now.

I’m not sure about it.
It seems to be aimed at the consumer market by being focussed heavily on music, books, video etc.
Sure, some will consider the larger screen to be handy for video, but if I’m going to watch a film I want it on at least 42 inches. Music, well it won’t do anything that an iPhone won’t do at a fraction of the size.
I was disappointed that it doesn’t have the proper Mac OS because that will limit it’s usefulness.
It may have a use if the iWork app files are one hundred percent, feature for feature, compatible with Office. Otherwise what’s the point in producing documents if the people you email them to can’t read them properly.
As for a drawing package, I think you can forget it. I reckon that the target market for the iPad aren’t the sort of people who would want Illustrator and therefore there won’t be enough volume for Adobe to want to get involved. Let’s face it, Corel can’t even be @rsed to produce a Mac OS desktop version of Draw.
And even if they do, install copies of Microsoft Office and Illustrator, add your music, video and photo files, and how much disc space will you be left with for work files? Not much. Sure, you can keep files on an internet server, but that’s only of any use if you are in range of wi-fi, as the geezer who tried to give us a presentation at the bike club last night found out, to the amusement of his audience. Internet servers are brilliant if you live in Cupertino, but out here in the rest of the world, not so good.
Obviously there’s lots more to find out, and I hope to be proved wrong, but it looks to me that, for work purposes, the iPad is not a substitute for a laptop.

I agree with John. It may be the next cool thing but it’s not designed for professional graphics applications. Apple are already doing a great job of that with the macbook and macbook pro.
Theres no way I could use illustrator without having one hand on the keyboard and the other on a mouse/touchpad at the same time. How would that work on the ipad?

I also agree. At the moment it’s just huge iphone. Might be worth wait one maybe two years and they can put proper OS, camera, pen etc..

Lots of this type of touch screen devices are planned to be launched this year and they will be windows based. I have a touch screen monitor have had for the past few years and never use it.

I dunno…I think the fact you need to hold it up would be very annoying. I like the L shape of a laptop just seems more versatile and user friendly. Love some of the apps though.

How long before they completely replace the keyboard of a macbook with this kind of touchscreen to make a dual screen setup. Now that would be useful!
Imagine an inbuilt drawing tablet or unfolding the two screens flat to create one huge screen. I’m getting excited already…

i think its got huge potential as a lot of applications are going web based and with mobile networks running at broadband speed then there is your market.
I recently found a website with a webbrowser version of Photoshop clone, thought that was amazing.I think it could only work as a companion to your main PC / Mac, on PC you "remote desktop connection" to your main PC and thats how i do work (its a problem with huge graphics or photos remoting), thats all the tablet has to do and you could go anywhere with it, loose it and so be it.

Not around here. Not by a long chalk. I try not to use the mobile network because it is just too painful an experience.
I know of at least two pubs around here where there is no phone signal at all, much less a useable data connection. 🙁

I was hoping it would be a more portable version of the Cintiq by Wacom. http://www.wacom.com . That way, graphics people would be able to draw directly on the screen. But missing ports, stripped-down OS and small hard drive won’t really work in that regard. I suppose a VNC app could get around those, but you would need an internet connection to access your main computer.

I don’t think you really need a huge amount of space, I can do everything I need to do using Freehand 5.5 which was on three floppy discs, that wouldn’t take up much space. I would also use mobile me for storage and hey presto your up and running. I would have liked to have seen a wacom style screen but we’ll see. It would be nice to see some of these applications watered down. I don’t need to use CS4 if I’m using this machine, if I do I’ll take my macbook pro. Again Photoshop 4.1 would be enough.

Personally, I think this is for the young geek demographic.
I think its a gimmick in that respect.
They started talking $au1000 ea when it was first released, by the end of the day, most pundits were suggesting it will probably sell in the $au600 bracket here.
I think its fantastic for what you can do, but its not really for the professional so much as its for those that a) think anything apple is a must buy, or b) they have to have the latest gadget/toy.
I’d put it at the ‘status symbol’ benchmark personally. Definitely a yuppie tool.

I think Shane, like with the iPhone, and we know what a success story that is, a lot will depend on the apps that will develop for the iPad. The way I see it, if a cut down version of illustrator and photoshop was available for it, the iPad could prove very useful as an on site design tool. You could show pre prepared artwork to a customer and make modifications. This could be achieved easily on a construction site environment where a laptop might be a little cumbersome.
I see potential for professionals with this but will probably need twelve months or so for it to reach something near it’s full potential as it is a new idea.
Personally, I love the simplicity and efficiency of all Apple products -
