    Bas*ar*s!!!

Bank Holiday Monday and there’s a few jobs to do round the house, i needed some tools from work so i thought i’d pop in and pick the tools up and then do the jobs round the house.
When i got there i realised that i had been broken in to. They’ve nicked my pc and monitor, fortunately they didn’t take my external hard drive that i back up to every month. Unfortunately for me i didn’t back up april and start of may so i’ve lost some important stuff.
Not only that work, theres all the contacts in outlook etc……

I suppose i’ll realise how much stuff i need to back up in the coming months. As for now it’s sorting the insurance and getting a new pc sorted out.

sorry to hear this mate… i too backup and then backup the backup but remembering to do it like clockwork is the thing.
i have a portable external drive, i really think hiding it is worth while when you think how easy it is to pinch. if not out of site, have it screwed down, seems a bit extreme but you can have a couple of years work stored on these drives! 😕

I’m really sorry to hear that Pryam. My PC packed in this morning and I had to configure another PC to drive my plotter to get up and running today. This brought home to me how much of a nuisance it is not having your regular PC as it all takes time to install all the software and get another PC configured the way the old one was. Loosing clients files on top of that is a real nightmare too.

I hope you get it all sorted without too much disruption to your business.

its annoying, has happened to a few ppl i know, lost a cnc computer once with dongle etc. over a bank holiday

hope insurance goes well, as some policies now stipulate offsite backups.

Anyone reading this who has a external drive plugged in which is kept in the same room as the computer and is uses as a backup…. DONT! take it home or a far building, you must try and backup weekly by unplugging and pluggin in & make a habbit of it.

    Thanks guys……..
I’ve been down and secured the unit the best i can.
If they had been big time they could have wiped me out.

I’m supposed to be doing a van wrap on Tuesday – Wednesday so i said to the customer he could bring his van in on Thursday and leave it in the unit over the bank holiday. It’s a huge van, a new mercedes sprinter. The keys were on my desk next to the computer.
They could have taken my new soljet pro 3, seal laminator, old versacamm and laminator, computers, tools etc and left me with nothing.
When i look at it like that i’m a bit happier!!!

Harry, yes i would love to catch them at it

    Sorry to hear this Pryam.

I’ve gone well over the top with backing up our data, let’s face it, it’s the most important part of our business, we have almost 20 years of clients files on our server.

The server has mirrored drives, which back up to a usb drive. This runs automatically at 10.00pm every night (only transfers files that have been used since the last back-up).

It’s all well and good backing up your data, but you also need it "off-site". If you have a fire and your data’s gone, again your stuffed!

Last weekend we installed another PC at my house with a VPN link back to the office, again this backs up every night, quite slow considering we only have a 4mb broadband connection in the office, but then again, if it takes hours to backup overnight it’s not causing any problems.

Then on top of this I have a USB drive backing up the back-up off site PC.

    Paranoid – who me?? 😀 😀 😀

Sorry to hear about the break in.
Phill had his unit broken into I remember some time back

Worrying thing is that they know what other stuff you’ve got
So make sure you secure the unit well

    Sorry to worry you

I was lucky! – The roller shutter on my unit was rammed by a car a couple of years ago. This triggered the alarm system and luckily nothing was stolen.

I agree wholeheartedly that backup of client data is of utmost importance and needs to be kept in a seperate location. I backup every week onto my laptop which is kept at home. Equipment can be replaced – client data cannot without a backup.
