  • Fitting a banner, under tension using elasticated cord

An interesting installation booked for next week.

Installing a number of vented fabric prints at a National Trust property, which throws up a few challenges.

We can only put fixings into the masonry seams, not into the brick, and with it being an older property it’s not very straight.

The idea is to fix eyelet bolts around the perimeter of the banners, and then string bungee cord through the eyelets in the fabric and the bolts, put some tension on the bungee and job’s a good ‘un.

Has anyone done this before, and any tips for installing.

    We’ve 2 @ 3000x2000mm and 4 @ 1800×1500

Rawl plugs and screws with large washers covering the eyelets would be the easiest way?

I don’t think I am going to be that lucky that the eyelets will all align with mortar seams. We’re not allowed to drill or damage the brick, only mortar. :awkward:

    Hi David

Have done this loads of times and it works really well, the cords allow for the more irregular spacing of the fixings. Using a continuous bungee cord weaving its way back and forth through the fixings and eyelets allows you to adjust the tension when some fixings are closer to the banner and some are further away.

Sorry no photos of ones we’ve done

    Cheers

    Cheers Dave.

Looks like this is the best way forward.

How did you go about getting the tension in the cord, and tying the end off? We’re thinking a crimping tool may be better/tidier?

Could you make alloy frames and screw these to the wall, then bungi cord the banners to them.

Or forget banner eyelets just drill trough the banner into the mortar,

We’re opting for the eyeleted bolts, and some bungee cord to pull it taught. It’s being printed on the Air Vent Fabric by James @ Group 101. We’ve got some crimps, so should be able to loop the end of the cord, and then feed the other end through that, pull it taught and crimp it off.

    Hi David

Sorry for the late response, all a bit busy at the moment.

Once the whole cord is a single loop then just feed parts back and forth until the tension is even all round – probably wont even be needed but its a simple process.

    Cheers

I will have an experiment when I get a few mins.

Client hasn’t sent the artwork yet, so has knocked the install back, so our client has got their own fitters as we’re only available Tue/Wed.
