Never ever seen estate agents signs with collapsable posts. They are normally on back of a pickup in a rack, one piece. Could do hinged with a locking pin but they would be tampered with. Some sort of double ended screw like an Ikea table leg fixing?

Because the sign maker only lives in a "£170,000 semi" so relatively scum, oh and foreign. Thats the Daily Mail for you (:)

Yes Ian glue sniffing used to be popular around these parts 🙂

Colin, yes good idea as some ply’s aren’t smooth. Largest will be 1m square and if I use contact I’ll butt it up to a straight edge so it should line up perfectly.

May 22, 2013 at 8:49 am in reply to: CNC Cut Letters, double sided tape on the back.

I would guess you would use some cheap vinyl, weed out the actual letters and stick the vinyl background on the wall with the letters positions cut out. If you cut the letters 1mm larger that would ensure the vinyl back wont get trapped under the fixed letters.

Edit: must have been posting this as Liam answered, same idea, depends on finish to wall. If it is brick outside you can easily peel the vinyl off, if its painted inside do as liam did and leave backing on.

How long would the print last on a vehicle? I have an old designjet 450c and was going to try out some of the inkjet printable vinyl, i’m only using it for small posters for my in-laws pub at the moment.

Have a look at the link above. The stuff has great reviews and they do a UV spray top coat as well. They have a pack of 5 A4 sheets for less than a fiver so it’s worth a try. They have a BOGOF on 20 sheets so 40 for £20.

Hi James, just had a quick look, first gut reactions 😀

Had a look at your website, can’t read your Company Name, graphics obliterate the tail of the y.

The Company Name? What’s behind that? Customers may get the impression they have to give you 7 days notice, whereas most want it yesterday 🙂

On your flyer, as Harry pointed it, it doesn’t just look right. You main contact is the phone number and it is skewed horribly. Straight and plain for contact points.

Your Logo Name has no space between the letters, hard to read.

Apart from that 😉 it is Friday 13th so no worries.

Looking at the same thing at the moment, trying to find the best way of doing it, so far i have come up with making my own cloud storage.

Western Digital have just released a 2tb hard drive which allows you to access it from anywhere with internet connection, meaning you don’t have to have it stored at the office.

What’s better is with that amount of space, I can store all my clients files on it and work on my iPad or laptop from anywhere.

I need to look into it a bit more but it sounds good to me, here’s the link http://www.comet.co.uk/p/Networking-Har … ive/703869

    Hi Daniel

I have the exact one, it is a great backup. It is not off-site for me, just plugged in to router. I can share files between all my computers, Mac and PC’s. Edit a photo on Mac, load it up on PC.

The best bit is you have an app on your iPhone or iPad and you can access any file while you are out and about.

Thanks for all the comments. I will have to email the image to you Stephen, it is too big to post on here. You were lucky, I found the original image on a pub history website I think within minutes. A bit of perspective change and rubbing out the lines. It is really not very precise but at that height you might get away with it. Used Jills idea of colour on the bottom letters, they are part of the image so can’t do much.
I presume you can do the Tetley bit, or whatever the Brewery is now.
I couldn’t really charge you anything, it may not look good enough when printed.
If it is okay for the job, drop a fiver in a charity box for me please 😉

Hi Alison, what software do you use? In CorelDraw you get a disk of 1000’s of clipart images. You can buy a disc of clipart but beware some / most are rubbish.

Their are plenty of online image libraries e.g. http://www.123rf.com/ which you have to buy credits to use.

You can get a book of images and scan the ones you want, but copyright will be your problem with that.

    Hi Gordon

So you are a web designer wanting to get into sign making? It looks like you want to get all the gear but no-idea… sorry :lol1: that sounds worse than I meant.

What I mean is don’t buy all the gear like that up-front, especially the CNC.

You can buy in CNC cut letters at first as you establish the business.

You can buy prints in at first as well.

Martin is spot on. Build your own workbench 8′ x 4′ sheet size. Buy Phil Fenton’s book. Get Gold membership here. Buy a decent cutter (with optical eye option for cutting prints later). Buy Mike Stevens book, Mastering Layout. Buy some rolls of vinyl etc and practice.

You have only spent a couple of grand then while you get a feel of sign making.

One golden rule, don’t design your signs like web sites 😀

You will have trouble, as Martin said you need a USB to Parallel converter FTDI chipset (a little box) not just the lead. You will select the Virtual Parallel port when you get the converter.

And to reiterate what Martin also said, Serial is the best way to go. Are you using a laptop with only USB? If you have a full tower PC I would get a PCI Serial card then you can just use a normal cable.

Nikofalltrades? 🙂 Sorry for being flippant but you say you are a novice. no design skills yet want to do everything that people on this site do.

I think you need to focus on your best skill first. That maybe window tinting? What printer/plotter have you now? What can you offer now?

I don’t think your Business name has to reflect everything you do. You can bullet point that later and add to it. If you didn’t know what Apple and Orange do you would think they were a greengrocers 😉

Hi Ben, I can’t think of a specific program but their are a few. Try looking for a ‘Photo Mosaic’ program. Plenty out there, pretty cheap. They loads hundreds of photos and lay them out in a grid, making it look like a picture of something made up of lots of little pictures.
You can leave the main picture out so it will just grid them……. or…. surprise your client… "hey, I can make all your little photos look like this" 😉

    Hi

Just a quick point Carl. How many of these will you be doing? Is it regular and just lettering to stencil?

I ask this because you may be better off getting a local sign company to do them for you. If it is regular and simple you could get a good price.

I know we all like doing stuff ourselves but you are talking of say £800-£1000 for the cutter and £300 for software plus a PC.

Hi Billy, I am not the most experienced here but I think my answer is what you will get from others. If it is just vinyl lettering on a car, do it dry. I think if it is wet the lettering would come away with the app tape unless you left it a long time to dry first.

I presume you have practiced on your own car first to get the feel of it? It’s hard to get bubbles on just lettering. Flood coating is another matter :lol1:

Depending on the main wording on the vans I would do it subtly. Go round at night and stick some bits of vinyl on. For example adding a strip of vinyl to an F to make an E depending what it spelt. If you are lucky and the Company name was Hunt, go round with some stick on ‘C’s’ 😀

They will drive round for ages before they notice and you will have some smug grins to yourself.

    Hi David

I only know what I have learned from the guys here. I think the white streaks are when it’s wet, it is the glue but they do go away.

I would weed the lettering after you have put it on the glass. If you do it wet though, the app tape will pull the lettering off I think until the frosting has dried.

I think frosting with a 5mm margin inside the frame looks good. It stops the edge of the frosting looking grubby and peeling around the frame.

Cheers Martin and Bobby. The edges are not too bad really, very fine bubbles, so PVA or Sealant might smooth it out. As the surface face is the finish I have a few nicks on the surface, might look at car body filler, again only small but visible at low level.

I remember a post about cutting letters out of foamex and filling the edges, but I think they were being sprayed after.

To be honest I hate seeing big signs like that held up by screws all along its length, looks tacky. 😳

I agree also but within the Clients budget? I would just put timber architrave on the surface around the edge. It covers the screws and gap and paint it with the rest of the woodwork when the painter comes in.

The sign next to Hugh’s is screwed on the front as well.

you are better off doing your designs and get someone else to print them at first. See you on Dragons Den 🙂

Gavin, I think you can get them delivered to UK. Another Company…

Helen, as Dave says, unless you are an artist creating your own designs, you are going to have a problem with copyright.

    Hi Helen

Are you looking to be similar to http://www.decalgirl.com?

I think you will struggle with a limited budget but as the skins will be small you could manage with an A4 or A3 printer with a CSS ink supply and a Cutter with OPOS registration mark system.

A combined printer and cutter will be expensive. More experienced people on here will be able to help, just throwing in my limited knowledge.

Don’t worry about coloured vinyl. You will just be printing on white digital stuff.

Good luck with your venture. I know what it is like to start working from home coping with an illness.

Edit: Just a thought, you will need templates for all the gadgets you want to do skins for. Looking at the kindle it has a full keyboard to cut out.

Didn’t you say on another topic that "And if I cut anything below 10mm, i.e. small lettering it is just making a mess of it. "

Just getting it straight how your redsail is in case you are selling it. Has the new cutting strip sorted it?

I think you are looking to use your existing hardware? Have a quick look at this Ioline plotter though for inspiration…

    http://www.ioline.com/prod/cp.html

It picks the rhinestones up and puts them on a transfer sheet.

Using a normal plotter however, I think you cut out holes on a template and then scatter the rhinestones over and they fall in place through the holes? I think Corel has a macro to plot the circles from a vector drawing. Hope that helps a bit.

    EDIT:

Graphtec do some software and stencil stuff for the Craft Robo, I think it should work on the full Graphtec.

An old thread, so seeing if anything better has come along since 4 years have passed.

Same as Marcella, bonding foamex sheet to foamex sheet. Pipe adhesive sounds good, tin with a brush in it. Anything better, evo-stik contact? I want to get it from B&Q rather than order and deliver please. Will be hung off the wall from the back sheet so I may be able to put a few screws in the back but nothing on the front face.

I can’t believe they have done that (:) Companies House says it’s not a new Company, they have been trading since 1999 as Neon Workshop and they are well in on the search engines. Can’t be just the web designer, have they a grudge against you? It’s very elaborate for a prank.

Cheers Dave, as I don’t know my foamed PVC, could it be just this Xtra stuff is curvy? What about normal white Foamex? Is that more rigid? Would 19mm be firmer but are the edges swiss cheesey? I searched before and Rob said cutting letters in 19mm needed filling.

I can’t PM you Mike. Not to worry, thanks again but I think I may be better with something self finished really. Going to try the panelclip and vclipz on the MDF. Not sure whether you could screw it to the back of 10mm foamex though. Maybe VHB tape would hold it but the pictures are heavy. The nails alone are 5kg – 10kg plus the board.
    Thanks again for the advice.

Any advice on making the foamex into a tray? If I v-grooved 25mm in from the edge all round, would the foamex just heat bend and glue it? Could you buy the foamex cut to size and already routed out to form and glue myself? I think fabricut do a flat kit for dibond.

    Hi Brenda
When you say sign writing, do you mean with a brush? I think your hands would cause shadows and get in the way of the line.
I have a laser level on a tripod. I use it in a room for aligning graphics all at the same height on all the walls. Outside would be too bright to see a laser level line clearly.

Thanks Martin, I worked out their is about 12,500 nails in the elephant. I never really added the time up, not a good hourly rate :lol1: I was working on that on and off within 2 months amongst doing other things. I am working on one with approx 15,000 nails in at the moment and I am keeping a log of the hours.

That sounds great Mike. The trouble I had to get any samples at all! I should have approached you guys first. Robert Horne were good and I have two cut to size panels of foamalux. What is the Signfoam like on the cut edges? Is it like swiss cheese? My thumb stops the hammer marking the surface :lol1:

Edit: Just looking at the Signfoam, looks good and close cell. Can you flood-coat it with vinyl rather than paint it? Love to try a sample please, who stocks it if I want to buy some?

Thanks so far. I like the panel and v clips Ian. Mike, it has to be thick to nail into for the artwork, I will explain all 😀

It is for my artwork. I am doing a series of pictures in nails. Each one is made up of over 10,000 nails. I did the first ones on 13mm MDF covered in matt white vinyl. Worked great but a bit heavy. I tried doing them on a sample of Foamalite and it works great also, looks a bit neater, apart from the rigidity. I would like a clean look, hence the frame on the back idea.

    Any more ideas please?
