10mm Foamalux 1m x 1m how to make more rigid?
I need some 1m x 1m square 10mm thick foamalux / foamex panels for some internal artwork. The 10mm foamalux xtra I have is not rigid, I presume normal foamalux / foamex is the same? (foamalux xtra has a black core of recycled with an outer skin of white)
I need to make these rigid. I need some sort of secret frame gluing to the back or would I be better making them like sign trays? V groove them 25mm in all round and heat fold it and make a tray? Any ideas gratefully received. This is to replace a current use of 13mm MDF panels.

It is for my artwork. I am doing a series of pictures in nails. Each one is made up of over 10,000 nails. I did the first ones on 13mm MDF covered in matt white vinyl. Worked great but a bit heavy. I tried doing them on a sample of Foamalite and it works great also, looks a bit neater, apart from the rigidity. I would like a clean look, hence the frame on the back idea.
Any more ideas please?

How about 1" thick "Signfoam" High Density Polyurathane.
I can send you a small piece to try if you want.
The trouble with that stuff is that it can mark easily if your not careful. -
That sounds great Mike. The trouble I had to get any samples at all! I should have approached you guys first. Robert Horne were good and I have two cut to size panels of foamalux. What is the Signfoam like on the cut edges? Is it like swiss cheese? My thumb stops the hammer marking the surface :lol1:
Edit: Just looking at the Signfoam, looks good and close cell. Can you flood-coat it with vinyl rather than paint it? Love to try a sample please, who stocks it if I want to buy some?

You will have to paint it, vinyl will stick to it but only if its painted. The cut edges are the same as the face, you can sand it to shape easily and carve it so cell structure is the same throughout.
I must warn you it isn’t cheap though, I got mine from Spandex. Signroc I think its called, but you might get some elsewhere.

Thanks Martin, I worked out their is about 12,500 nails in the elephant. I never really added the time up, not a good hourly rate :lol1: I was working on that on and off within 2 months amongst doing other things. I am working on one with approx 15,000 nails in at the moment and I am keeping a log of the hours.

I can’t PM you Mike. Not to worry, thanks again but I think I may be better with something self finished really. Going to try the panelclip and vclipz on the MDF. Not sure whether you could screw it to the back of 10mm foamex though. Maybe VHB tape would hold it but the pictures are heavy. The nails alone are 5kg – 10kg plus the board.
Thanks again for the advice.Any advice on making the foamex into a tray? If I v-grooved 25mm in from the edge all round, would the foamex just heat bend and glue it? Could you buy the foamex cut to size and already routed out to form and glue myself? I think fabricut do a flat kit for dibond.

i have found that foamalux extra is a pain… one batch flat, next batch slightly curved
Shame as that product got so much scope, there is other problem which i wont go into here for direct printing like static, but it does look lovelly when something is printed on it.

Cheers Dave, as I don’t know my foamed PVC, could it be just this Xtra stuff is curvy? What about normal white Foamex? Is that more rigid? Would 19mm be firmer but are the edges swiss cheesey? I searched before and Rob said cutting letters in 19mm needed filling.

as long as it is delivered flat, then u should be ok.. dont store on either edge at all after u receive it.
19mm i think is ok, but be pointless me checking as we store on the short edge and dont print to it
