  • which adhesive is best?

Posted by Marcella Ross on January 10, 2007 at 9:55 am

I’m sticking 5mm foamex to 5mm foamex, which adhesive would be best for the job? It is for hanging strips so it will be taking the weight of the sign.
I had good stuff before ………. but can’t find it nor can I remember what it was called. It was a 2 part stuff …….. 😕

    TIA

    Marcella

    Tensol?

I always tend to put some countersunk self tappers through as well because I believe in belt and braces stuff 🙄

Take a look at the Loctite web site as they have an excellent online product selector based on application http://www.loctite.co.uk From previous experience Loctite are extremely helpful and can do onsite product demonstrations.

If you get it right, an adhesive will provide a fixing strength well above that of mechanical fastener’s (bolts screws etc), however due to curing times a couple of screws are necessary to 1. prevent initial peeling and 2. hold the pieces in contact until full cure strength is achieved.

    Hope this helps

Yes, the pvc pipeweld adhesive from diy shops is the best I have found. If you can find Osma brand, it comes in a tin with a brush in the lid, then all the better.

    Loctite do a reinforced superglue.

Ordinary super glue sticks PVC together amazingly well – and if you used enough of it to just coat the surfaces it’s impossible to separate them.

I normally put a bead down any PVC hanging strips & add it a few screws for added peace of mind – not had a problem yet.

Probably would not go far wrong with "tough as nails". Doesn’t have the associated vapor problems and if you apply a thin film to both mating parts it will be pretty strong. As with any adhesives their strength lies in the amount of BONDED surface area. Any deformation in the material could result in small voids that do not stick thus reducing the CONTACT area.

Super glue although strong does have the problem with being brittle esp with plastics

The pipeweld stuff already mentioned I’ve used before ……… for plumbing right enough, not signs. But being familiar with it, I’ll give it a go.
As for Superglue ……… I’m rarely successful with that ……… usually stick my fingers together 😮

    have a look here

tensol has THF in it but we have never had much success, 2 part epoxies seem the way to go but as a previous poster said I always put a couple or three screws through hanging strips, just to make sure.

I use to use Euro-bond for most of my adhesives, they supply adhesives to all sorts of industries including the sign industry. Always found them very helpful in ensuring I had the right glue for the job. The penloc was very good for this sort of thing if I remember rightly.

Never let it be said I don’t search :lol1:

An old thread, so seeing if anything better has come along since 4 years have passed.

Same as Marcella, bonding foamex sheet to foamex sheet. Pipe adhesive sounds good, tin with a brush in it. Anything better, evo-stik contact? I want to get it from B&Q rather than order and deliver please. Will be hung off the wall from the back sheet so I may be able to put a few screws in the back but nothing on the front face.
