I can’t really help you on this but my gut feeling on ‘testing’ the water is that the market is saturated with cheap sticker makers on ebay etc. You have to offer something new to stand out now. Roland have got a new £5k model out at the moment that is exactly what you are looking for I think.

It is for photographs, not the batch printing of 1000’s of leaflets.

It runs in CorelDraw or Ilustrator. You can get an older version of CorelDraw very cheaply.

Yes, storage in the ‘cloud’, as another back up anyway. Still need the local and the off site storage but if they go you would be unlucky to lose your ‘cloud’ at the same time.

Thanks Rob, guys and gals 😉 glad I wasn’t too far away in my thoughts.
The consultingltd was the worst bit I thought. Anyway, they have gone with the new one :lol1: . The customer is always right. -
Hi Rod
I had 2 of those. My last one died a couple of months back. I remember getting the second one because it was cheaper to buy a brand new one (with full cartridges) rather than just the cartridges for the old one 😮
Anyway I got a sale Lexmark C543 from Staples for £150! Networked, it is brilliant. Everything inside is separate, fuser etc and just toner boxes so they are cheaper to replace. The HP’s were all in one cartridges so were more expensive. I used to think HP = Quality for printers, but I find Canon better for inkjet and this Lexmark laser is great.

MemberApril 6, 2011 at 9:17 am in reply to: Views on Warburtons Bread new corporate brand?Haha, read this guff without cursing…
Quote…
"Bolton-based bakery brand Warburtons has refreshed its identity to communicate its "superior quality" and improve its appeal on shelves.
The new look was designed by Smith & Milton, which aimed to simplify the look and enhance recognition of the Warburtons family name.
It will start to roll out this month on vehicles and signage before appearing on a refreshed range of packaging from January onwards. All products are scheduled to bare the new identity by next summer.
The new look will also feature on all marketing communications from the beginning of next year, as well as sampling and point-of-sale material.
A new marketing campaign including TV advertising, digital communication, promotions, public relations, sampling and in-store activation will also appear from January.
Richard Hayes, marketing director at Warburtons, said: “Warburtons’ investment in this brand refresh is a tangible demonstration of our continued commitment to driving brand and category value growth. We’re confident the new look will increase consumer interest and simplify navigation of the bakery category at fixture where we are a ‘sign post’ brand for consumers.
“The refreshed logo and range packaging present our brand’s established strengths in a more compelling fashion and rejuvenate rather than reinvent our look, because our company values and brand proposition are unchanged,” he added.
“Warburton’s family name remains at the heart of our identity and this evolution communicates it in a clearer, more confident manner. Evolving our corporate colour from red to orange presents a warmer, more contemporary expression of our brand personality, drawn from Warburtons historical company colours.
“The new look delivers a stronger range identity, better communicates our key strengths of quality and care and will enhance stand out on shelf. It presents a positive opportunity for our retail customers to capitalise on the enhanced consumer awareness and interest the brand refresh will deliver.”

Martin, try this, saved it in Illustrator 3 which was pre 96 😀
-
quote John Gregson:Hi Martin,
Alan beat me to it – Coreldraw does a fine job.It does, I always used Corel before I got VectorMagic. Alan, sorry but I think yours has a few rogue grey bits so it won’t do a clean single colour cut. (Break it apart and delete the big bit and you will see them) 😉
-
Martin, try this one. I saved it from Illustrator in a legacy version (Version 10) it seems to load fine. John’s file was fine here as well so you may have a problem importing eps?
-
Martin, I have the full version of VectorMagic. If you post the original bitmap I will vector it for you and export it any way you like.

At first I thought power supply, but looks like the head is broken. The plastic cover is cracked so it has been hit hard. How much did you pay for it? Send it back?
Without expensive spare parts I wouldn’t like to plot accurately with it even if you fix it.

MemberMarch 24, 2011 at 10:24 am in reply to: Starting business as a sign maker, advice appreciated?Good luck Zed, you are coming at this from the right angle. Some people seem to start up as a bit on the side of another business, think they can do signs.
You seem to have some design skills, a business plan approach and enthusiastic.
As others have said, leave the printing alone yet. You can do some nice stuff in cut vinyl. Get some steady bread and butter work out of the door.
I would befriend the 70 year old retired sign writer. Take him out for lunch. He would be a great help to you. Pass on some knowledge, and maybe only semi-retired so could help you out.
Cheers
-
I am not the best person to answer this…… but my gut feeling is, if you only want banners, is not to bother. I believe a printer needs to be running all the time to be cost effective, and it will be running all the time in a sign business. Even if you are running off 1 banner a day, it’s not much work for the printer. A PVC printer is not the same as having an inkjet in the office. I would stick to what you know, marquee hire, and let some sign people help you.
There are plenty of online banner companies where you can order a banner and have it delivered next day so out in the sticks isn’t a problem. If you are out in the sticks you are not going to get much passing trade for extra business for your printer.
All meant in the best possible taste 😀

I tried an iPad last year for a couple of weeks. Found I didn’t need it as I have a MacBook Pro laptop. (The missus was amazed I took it back :lol1: ) If you had to meet a client on site and you have a laptop you could take that with you to show your portfolio and some designs etc.
If you haven’t got a laptop then it may be a consideration to take your portfolio with you and show some designs, it does look more professional than a few A4 prints. Their are some drawing packages so you could do draft sketches on site.
-
As it has a USB port on the back I would expect it to already have the converter inside. I think your are looking for virtual com ports on your PC. I think it maybe COM3. It is not a USB device, it just connects that way.
-
They have knocked £100 off the old iPad. £329 not bad if you don’t need the iPad 2 improvements.

Does a complete clone of your hard disk, including the sectors with your software license information, so you may not have to install your software again. Your new laptop will have Windows 7 on it. You could overwrite it with your cloned old laptop then update the drivers. You will have to authorise your Windows XP again but could transfer your license off your old laptop. Ring Microsoft and they will swap the license over. This is just so you can run the old SignBlazer software.
I would really consider having a fresh system though, with new cutting software. You can take your hard drive out of your old laptop and buy a USB enclosure for it so just plug it in your new laptop.
-
Are you using a laptop? I am not sure but I think they put out a slightly reduced signal which is fine for most devices but a big plotter? It is definately the case with parallel ports on a laptop.
-
quote Gwaredd Steele:Once you go Mac, you never go back 😉
Yes Gwaredd, I would agree with that, I am a Mac Head, had a Mac before anyone had Macs, back in 1984… but, I still have a PC for its parallel port and Mach 3 (CNC) and of course Corel Draw. Do artwork on the Mac then DXF it to the PC. Use Corel for my plotter.

Have you been out and bought it yet Cheryl? The reason I ask is I have read on the rumour mill that new iMac’s may be out in a couple of days, maybe Thursday.
Quote: "As previously reported, the new iMac line is said to sport a new panel size purportedly due to a revised manufacturing process. It is likely that the refreshed iMac line will also incorporate Intel’s Sandy Bridge architecture for its processors and possibly even its much more powerful integrated graphics, at least in its entry-level models. This could also result in a price drop for the entry-level versions of Apple’s all-in-one.
Currently, Apple’s entry-level 21-inch iMac models are equipped with first-generation dual-core Core i3 and Core i5 chips ranging in speed from 3.06GHz to 3.6GHz, paired with ATI Radeon HD 4670 and or ATI Radeon HD 5670 discrete graphics cards. Intel’s second-generation Core i3 chips are currently offered in 2.5GHz through to 3.3GHz versions. Its new Core i5 models range in speeds from 3.30Ghz to 3.60Ghz.
Apple’s 27-inch iMac models currently start with a first-generation Core i3 processor running at 3.2GHz through to a 2.8Ghz Core i5 quad-core processer. A Core i7 clocked at 2.93GHz is also offered as a build-to-order option. These are paired with ATI Radeon HD 5670 discrete graphics for the dual-core models or ATI Radeon HD 5750 discrete graphics for the quad-core models. Intel’s second-generation quad-core Core i5 processors start at 2.5GHz and top out at 3.30GHz. Its Core i7 quad-core range starts at a clock speed of 2.53GHz and tops out at 3.4GHz. Intel also offers a new six-core Core i7 running at 3.20GHz, but it is likely that this version will be too expensive to see it fitted to an iMac at this time."

MemberFebruary 11, 2011 at 10:53 am in reply to: The "How to setup a USB P-Cut" GuideI presume you have had the drivers from here?
http://www.pcut-cn.com/edownload/download.php
As Martin says ignore the FTDI for now, that maybe confusing the issue. The latest PCUT’s do have FTDI converters inside but I don’t think yours is the latest?
-
It is plugged in correctly. The actual USB / Serial converter we are talking about is inside the plotter so in effect it looks like any other USB device. The external USB / Serial converter’s we have been talking about are for when the plotter has the 9 pin serial port on the back.
If you have the drivers installed I would imagine you have to mess about with the virtual com ports. Deleting COM2 seems a favourite tip and make the software use COM4. The actual drivers may be working, it just the cutting software that is not set up correctly.
I would download some demos of other cutting software to try. They might find the plotter.
-
Have you tried installing the driver before plugging the plotter in? The instructions at the start of this thread seem good?
-
Sorry Martin, I was just referring to the keyspan that I have. It just uses the serial cable that comes with the plotter that would have connected to the serial port of a PC.
-
-
It is probably the USB to serial cable. The best ones are Keyspan adapters. I have one that works but I prefer using my old XP desktop for plotting, just seems rock solid. You can run Windows XP virtually on Windows 7.
-
Got to agree with Dave, that’s where I got mine from. Forget ebay, even if you find a listing. Official authorised resellers should be okay.
-
Does your PCUT have a serial port as well as a USB port? If it does then the card will work. Connecting it serial to serial. The USB port on these plotters isn’t a proper USB port. It is a USB to serial converter inside. If it still doesn’t work you will have a serial port on your computer which will stand you in good stead for getting a better second hand plotter (roland, graphtec etc) which if older will only have a serial port.

😮 😮 The grey X is a shadow of the pink X. It just looks wrong when it doesn’t match with it. In my eyes 😀 but I do wear glasses. I wasn’t suggesting to turn the pink X, I know it is part of the logo, so is the grey X.

I was always of the belief that Signlab was expensive so never entertained it. I use Coreldraw and Signtools. When I see the new boys on here that have just bought a plotter and are using Signlab I always think they are using a pirate version as it costs well over a £1000
How much is it for the entry version and the vinyl version please? Just the RRP, not particular deals or anything.
-
The grey X has to be the same way round on both sides, like the pink one. You didn’t reverse the pink one on the drivers side so leave the grey one the same 😎
-
I can only think of using ink. Something that will soak into the baize and leave the surface feeling the same.
You could get a stencil cut and stipple ink through it, very dry, as the ink would spread.
Why anyone would want to put the Everton crest on a pool table when you could put the Liver’POOL’ one on 😀 😀

If all those new "buy to let / homes under the hammer" landlords (not you Bob, you seem to have been doing this for years) hadn’t flooded and inflated the housing market, perhaps we wouldn’t have had the crash we have had and property prices would be reasonable and people wouldn’t have to rent.

Personal circumstances dictate a whole manner of justifications, but selling and using equity, then renting seems a very strange and risky route.Rent is not always a total loss Bob. True, it does depend on your personal circumstances. Lee’s house could lose £30k in value in the next few years, plus mortgage payments will not have reduced the mortgage in that time. If Lee borrowed £30k to set up the business, the repayments would be crippling.
Sorry to go off topic Lee 😀
We sold our house at the end of 2009. My wife had a quick job move last year, had to find a house quick to save a 200 mile round trip everyday. We found a house to rent, moved in 1 week after seeing it, none of that conveyancing marlarky, fees etc. and heartache. The house is far better than anything we could afford to buy, so going to enjoy life for a couple of years with no worries about negative equity 😉
I know it depends where you live. The south east doesn’t operate like that, I know, but up t’north things aren’t that rosy if you are trying to sell.

Just reading between the lines you seem to have a lot of software, and both platforms, Mac and PC. Which do you have to use, the Mac with CS5 or PC with everything else?
If you have spent a few thousand pounds on SignLab though, I am sure that is the best software to use. I see people on here say it can do anything sign related, although a little complicated. Researched and realised that loads of tablets were released in mid 2005 onwards. Windows XP tablet edition, all with Wacom pens! (If you use a Wacom tablet you will understand). Picked one up off ebay for £150, installed Windows 7 on it and SketchBook Pro and it’s great for drawing on. Bit like an overblown etch a sketch 😀

Hi Warren
More hard drive space doesn’t increase speed really, it is the actual speed and interface on the drive. The new kids on the block are SSD’s though. Solid state memory. No moving parts or disks. Think of them as a big USB memory stick. I am no expert, where is Dave Rowland when you need him :lol1:
I would try the memory upgrade first. I have a Pentium IV 2.4 PC and it has CorelDraw, Photoshop/Illustrator CS5 and it runs fine with 2GB Ram. The hard disk drive is the slowest part.
-
Warren
repeating what kev says. Try upgrading the memory and do a fresh install of windows and service pack 3. If the machine is just for the one task you can leave it just to do that.If you want a new unit and the keyboard, monitor etc is ok you only need a new base unit. I would go to a local PC shop and get just the box built. Wouldn’t buy one from Currys or PC World unless you want the £70 part ex. You will have more than £70 worth of hassle with a Packard Bell though 😀
Depending on your budget and if your keyboard, monitor are fine… and you are a mac head 😉 get a mac mini! Run it with windows on for Versaworks, the beauty being you have a back up system for your main work machine. You can keep a full backup system on the mini. Run it as a windows machine but could boot it up as a mac, your main machine if you have a failure of your iMac.
-
Fantastic Warren, you must be very proud of that job.
-
Love the wall graphics you are doing. Just wondering, would you need planning permission for something that big? I know it’s only the same as an advertising hoarding but it would be an eyesore in some peoples eyes.
-
Vectorwise is it Andrew? On here I think. Someone else will get you his contact details.
-
It says something about ‘open box package’. Why would software be opened?
Can you not get hold of a previous version? The upgrade is only £166 on Amazon.
The manual you get is a hard back book. Really nice but not really a full on help manual just a user guide.
-
Thanks Jamie for clearing that up 😉
-
I confirm what Rob is saying. It’s NOT the site but the limitations of the phones ability or software. I have tried other sites with embedded scroll windows and the scroll bars don’t show on them either.
What I can’t understand is were some people say it works on some iPhones and not others 😕 Software isn’t arbitrary. It works the same on the same configured hardware all the time.
Are we talking about the same scroll bars?
-
quote Jon Marshall:The two finger scroll works on iPad and iPhone. RTFM 🙂
Yes Jon I know, use it all the time when I have scroll bars. The problem here is that the scroll bars don’t show. Going to try all the browsers that are available for iPhone to see if one works.
-
It happens on any touch screen device. Anywhere that you would ‘click’ and ‘drag’ such as scroll bars can’t be implemented yet on a touch screen device. I have tried most of the different browsers on the iPhone/iPad and none of them have it. Something about if you are pointing at something on screen you can click but not drag. If the scroll bar was there and you touched it, in pulling it down it would pull the whole screen down with your touch. It need better software so that when you click on the scroll bar and hold, it changes from blue to red then you can scroll it.

Hi Chris, just saw some more photos from Twitter. Excellent stuff and a start on a new market. Wrapping on cars, vans etc has taken off, I am sure wall wraps are the next big thing.
You see murals and trompe l’oeil done by artists (I have done some :)) which are time consuming. I can see a great opening here.
