  • Am I way out with Price?

Hi Guys, Just want a bit of advice really.
Had a customer in the shop yesterday, wanting a full colour banner
7 metres x 750mm. Wants images on it that he doesn’t have so I have sourced and provided them and laid out the wording etc.
He’s just come in and I’ve shown him the design. Thinks its great.
    Told him £95.00 plus v.a.t.
He’s called me a robbin’ b@st@rd and walked out.

Am I really that far out with my pricing?

I have just done a banner 5100 x 610mm at £150.00. Just plain lettering and 2 logos in a single colour.
    Your under-priced in my books.
Let him go, plenty of fish in the sea.

Thanks guys. I thought I was about right, probably on the competitively
    priced side shall I say.
Trouble is I’ve just started doing Banners and want to get my pricing right.
Don’t want to end up being a busy fool though.

People like that aren’t worth bothering with mate. if he’d have come here and said the same to me I’d have slapped him. There’s no need to talk to you like that.

The problem there though is you have spend time and effort doing a visual and now don’t have a customer to pay for it.

Would it not have been better telling him the price before hand – then you wouldn’t have wasted your time?

I agree with John, always price first.

You’re too cheap, don’t compete with eBay, let them fight over cheap customers. I sub out my digi banners and pay around £20 psm if I recall, I retail a 3.5x1m (10×3 ft) banner for around £110-130 – depinding on job and customer. Sourced images are extra.

If you’re a retailer (ie selling to joe public) then they need a retail price, only do trade to genuine mates or … The trade! No point underselling your products.

i know i am in a different country, but i also think that’s too cheap! My price 156€ for the banner, any artwork, images etc would be extra.

ebay prices are crazy and not worth competing with in my opinion.

    hope that helps!

Price first, and a deposit too, before even turning on your computer.
No matter how big the other guy is!

Thanks again for the advice guys.
Just to clarify, I did give him a price £100 – £120 when he first came in.
And he said that was o.k.
Where I went wrong is not getting a deposit there and then.
I only decided to do it a bit cheaper because I got the usual sob story –
"Just opening a shop, haven’t got much money, you’ll get the job when i can afford a proper sign" etc.
    I guess I’m a bit of a soft touch!!

Quoted one this week, only a small shop sign. Got down from 200 to 40.00 for a scrap of foamex.

Still too much she says "doing my own 3d one myself now"

These people wonder why they get no business when they open

It’s not just ebay though. I drove past a place near Mansfield a while ago and they were advertising 10 x 2 banners for £35 inc. vat and artwork. These people
are putting businesses under. It’s ok saying don’t compete with ebay but perhaps soon we’ll have no choice. Just look at retail on the high street….many have gone because of internet deals.

    Way to cheap.

    I’m around £30sq/m, plus design.

Yes ebay is cheap, but customer service, face to face, experience, quality personal design service, same day printing?

I’ve quoted on 2 5.5mX1m banners, for a large customer, who I am doing increasingly more work for. They like how I operate, the quality, customer service, designs, and provided they get all of the above they pay the going rate.

Because of the volume of work, they’re a pleasure to deal with, pay on time, I do discount things, such as banners. Its not massive amounts but appreciated.

99% of my customers come to me, because we do what we say, and go the extra mile. We can because we’re not swamped with small, low profit jobs… Unlike the competition!

I am getting used to asking for a deposit, it can feel awkward but why waste time that you could be getting paid for!

Thanks for everyones input. Unfortunately I’m not too far away from an outlet that Karl has described and therefore pitched my price accordingly.
However after reading all the replies I think I’ll side with David and quote £30 per metre plus design. Banners aren’t my main business and I don’t need to ‘buy’ the work, it’s just something I thought would compliment our existing trade.

Base the price on what your business needs, and what the market will take.

I don’t sell loads of banners, but the ones I do, are worth doing.

I point blank refuse to lower prices if its not worth it, or if the customers fishing.

Example, a trade customer of mine is getting stickers printed an laminated at £20 a sq/m. I would want 40 minimum. So I refused, when they asked would I ever do it for their price.

Obviously they’re not happy with them, or why else would they be shopping around?
Why would I sell something for £20 that the next day I could sell for more than double?

Pricing is hard, takes time, but don’t be scared of saying no every now and again, and its amazing how when you refuse to negotiate on price they still place the order with you.

I only took over the business in Nov 10, and I’m still learning. I charge what I think is fair, I do a fair job, and usually deliver on time. It becomes easy when you filter out the time wasters.
