  • Vinyl cracking glass?

Posted by Nick Tunstill on September 11, 2012 at 1:11 pm

I applied some black frosted window vinyl to the bottom inside of a shop window in a strip apporx 2.3 m x 500mm with a silver frosted vinyl same width about 1m high running above it with a gap in between. The window has developed a crack running upwards about a month later and the customer has been told it is down to the dark vinyl and high temperatures by a glazier. The glass is very heavy duty laminated material so very strong. Is this possible?

    Thanks

I’ve been told this can happen by a glazer who’s seen glazed units explode because of tint applied on the inside, the gas between the sheets of glass heats up. Asked him if this can happen with thoughened glass, was told "Yes".

    The simple answer is YES!
Do a search of the boards as this has been discussed at length before.

As said before, definitely YES plus being Black it is even more likely. The glass behind the black would be warmer than the rest of the cooler glass causing stress and cracking.

Thanks for the info, looks like I will be replacing a window then!
Shame the suppliers didn’t warn me of this when ordering.

Nick I find your comment regarding suppliers does seem harsh, suppliers offer a huge amount of films that you can apply to glass, how you use it or colour combination is down to you and your customer, suppliers can only advise what vinyl’s are suitable, how you use those materials is down to you signmakers.

It’s called thermal loading and its covered in the Avery Training Academy under Architectural signage.

Yes Nick as all the others have said.
In fact laminated glass is one of the worst offenders.
I support Nigel in the comment about suppliers. they can not be expected to warn every sale about where not to use their materials. I reckon that is the responsibility of the tradesman to know his trade. Unfortunately this may be an expensive lesson.

However when I first began window film application my suppliers would not sell me any film until I had undergone training in exactly this scenario as we encounter it with every job. We also fill in a Glass application chart so the supplier can warranty the job.this is usually done before installing the film so the supplier can warn of any adverse affects.

Its a lot more complicated with signs and vinyl as we do not get absorption figures for each colour. Having two different vinyls on the same pane with different absorption would increase the likelihood of thermal stress.

Much more info in the thread Phil has referred to.
