I haven’t read every post on this thread but it is interesting to scan over. It’s understandable consumers have no idea of the wastage in fishing and many other ‘industries’. Specifically regarding fishing…my brother was a trawler skipper/owner for many years until the ‘rules’ forced him out. He could only go to sea so many days a year and only ‘land’ fish of a specified size or over. He was disgusted at the waste and destruction of fish stocks realised because of the stupid legislation. He took part in numerous demonstrations (peaceful ones such as a huge rally of trawlers some years ago in Brixham) but all to no avail.

The beaurocrats (sp) decided to increase the size of the net mesh to stop the smaller fish getting trapped. They wouldn’t listen to the fishermen who told them it wouldn’t make any difference because once the ‘end’ of the net was full the small ones would still be caught up…….ergo there’s still huge wastage…..and it’s a disgrace!

Hopefully one day the ‘rule makers’ will see sense…..we live in hope… 🙄

Thanks Q…looks like it is available over here…..just going to ring the suppliers…though I’m hoping Cheryl’s suggestion will work as they only do 10 yards minimum and that’s overkill for a few decals

Hi Paul…you might want to try aerosol brake cleaner on that original curtain. It degreases and evaporates leaving no residue….but if you do use it try it on a ‘hiden’ area first just in case there’s a reaction though I’ve used it on foamex and vinyl with no ill effects.

Craig…I’ve been doing graphics etc for a custom spray shop for a few months now and all my print is non laminated eco-sol. The paint shop thinks the stuff is the dogs’ danglies and the only problem…note single decal problem… from dozens of prints done was his fault (he admitted it was his fault) and due to poor application. And yes he laquers all the stuff I send him.

I just tried the second banner I printed at higher temp and it’s just the same…..so I’m going for broke and cranking the temp right up and using sign & display ink profile on Versaworks…fingers crossed as this one has to be out and posted on Monday…

    Hi Dave,

The warmth/heat can be felt and the profile for the banner material shows 37 degrees print and 40 degrees dryer.

I have upped these to 40 print and 45 dryer and reprinted and this seems….note I said seems…… to have done the trick but help/advice from the more knowledgable would be appreciated…

Hi Chris…..no I’ve not had the ‘pleasure’ of fitting yet and that’s why I was concerned when I was told he was using app tape. Being a ‘beginner’ my knowledge has been gleaned from here and the font of video knowledge…’youtube’…and not the rubbish that sometimes pops up on there either. Having seen some of the professionals there….vehicle wrapping of Dakar rally cars and the impressive Mr Lambie truck & vehicle wrapping it seemed strange to be using app tape….but I’m ready to stand corrected.

Hi Chris…..like I said the customer rarely keeps things for long…he’s renown for getting rid at the right price so laminating would just have been a waste of time and money in my opinion. The thing I was concerned about was the comment that I used a ‘cheap’ vinyl and it will shrink…..I bet Grafityp won’t be too happy if they read this… 🙄

Supposedly the ‘fitter’ has been in the ‘trade’ for over 20 years so I’m a bit puzzled as to why he would use app tape on a medium size (1 mtr x 0.80 mtr)panel?

Luke…thanks for the ‘mini bus’ info ….it makes me feel a bit better about non lamination…..though I have posted now about getting a laminator.

    Thanks Peter,
That’s exactly why I asked the question…..only you put it better than I did.

The reason I asked the question was hopefully to find out from those using Fluid mask 3 after having used the Lite version if version 3 is that much more effective. At present I only know the capabilities of the Lite version and if you folks can tell me whether version 3 is that much better/more effective that’s what I would like to know.

Well, thank god there’s people who like to experiment, otherwise we’ll still using the Primitive woodblock printing. 🙂

Quote: “I will not say I failed 1000 times, I will say that I discovered 1000 ways that can cause Failure.” Thomas Alva Edison.

Very true…but messing with the insides of ££££’s of machinery just to save a few £’s on ink …too risky in my book with the possible scenario of the machine down time to mess with and/or a big bill for Roland to put it right not to mention lost production time…….

As long as you have written proof of the acceptance you should have no problem. Usually the ‘promise’ of SCC is enough to get wallets open…..

Gert…my SP in the photo is an older SP. However I was informed it was one of the last of the previous SP with the updated motherboard. This means no replacement was needed to run Versaworks…..it merely required a switchover on the board to recognise and operate VW…and yes it is very solid and quite heavy which I like…as we say it’s built like a tank… :lol1: and yes again I got a brilliant deal…

You beat me to the reply Gavin……just to expand on this …..the machine has a self clean function which requires it not to be switched off/powered off like Gavin said. Also if yours is like/similar to mine it goes ‘to sleep’ (energy saving circuitry)when not in use and ‘wakes up’ to self clean. However this self clean does not negate the need to do a 2 weekly manual clean……unless, like Gavin said, you fancy a nice big bill for gummed up heads.

Hi Dan….I just had my SP 300V installed with VW and SignLab8 for Versaworks. All the software is running fine on Vista Home 64bit. Apparently VW says it doesn’t work on Vista Home 64bit but the chap who installed my machine said this is not the case and got it installed and running with no problems. As for computer spec…well I’m no ‘geek’ so I would say got for the biggest HD and RAM along with the fastest chipset/processor you can afford. That way you are going someway towards ‘future proofing’.

Oh and as a ‘heads up’….the chap who installed my machine/software said to steer clear of Windows 7 in any form for the time being as it is so very new and might not support other software packages you might want to run. Also being so new it is having ‘teething problems’.

Just got this from a military chat site:

    Published: Friday, April 16, 2010
HELSINKI – Finnish fighter jets which flew through the volcanic dust covering much of Europe suffered damage and the air force warned Friday the cloud could have a significant impact on planes.

The air force F-18 Hornet jets were on training flights in northern Finland on Thursday morning, when airspace was still open, and the engines were later found to contain fine, volcanic ash dust.

"Based on the pictures, it was discovered that even short flights in ash dust may cause significant damage to an airplane’s engine," the Finnish Defence Forces said in a statement.

Images taken inside one Hornet engine with a fibroscope camera indicated that the heat of the engine – around 1,000 degrees Celcius – had melted the ash inside the engine, blocking ventilation channels. "Blockages of ventilation channels caused by melting ash lead engine components to overheat and material to weaken," it said, adding this could fracture rotating engine parts. In the worst case, the weakening of component materials could cause "parts to detach and the engine to be destroyed," it said.

The Hornets exposed to the dust from the eruption of a volcano in Iceland would be checked thoroughly, with "at least some" of the engines detached and sent for further studies and repair.

Maybe the right decision was made then?

IMO it was a ‘damned if you do …damned if you don’t’……and I feel that maybe this tme to err on the side of caution was correct. If just one 747 had gone in with hundreds onboard there would be worse questions to answer than there are now……

and no I’m not of the risk avoidance mindset…more of the ‘err on the side of caution’ where literally hundreds, if not thousands of lives are concerned.

The oldie comment on pricing was:

Chap gets a quote from 2 places…..one for £100 and one for £50. He goes to the guy who quoted £100 and asks why he charges so much in comparison to the guy down the road….The guy charging £100 says if you don’t like my price why are you here…..

The answer ….because the guy selling for £50 doesn’t have any…..

The answer to the ‘cheap e-bay etc’ sellers is that now ‘everyone’ has some!!

Hugh….Those are both good looking and ‘simples’ IMO.

The rear view looks particularly good. It’s clear, informative and has all the info needed to see what you offer and how to contact you…..and it is eyecatching.

Oh and it was a turbo-prop not a piston engined a/c in the report so it was a so called ‘jet engined’ a/c flying in there….

There’s definitely more to this – I’m not buying the Volcanic Eruption cover story..

I was watching on the news tonight – they showed film of the volcano erupting taken from an airplane a few miles away from eruption, yet here thousands of miles away and with a perfectly clear sky (where’s all the dust I’m asking myself) it’s supposedly too dangerous for any planes to fly!!

    Nope – doesn’t add up.

I reckon when Gordon Brown and his cohorts get their live debate this evening the first question they should be asked is “own up and tell us what is really going on” ? 😮

Nothing like a good conspiracy theory Phil…unfortunately this time I have to say I’m sure there isn’t one. The ash is being spewed upwards right into the jetstream where most a/c operate. This dust if ingested acts like a grit bath on the compressor blades, clogs filters and basically causes engine shutdown….not a good idea at 40000 feet (ish).

The a/c doing observation flying was probably around 15-20000 feet. Winds are predictable and measurable. In close proximity to the volcano…(or wherever the a/c is flying… the crew know where the dust/debris will be blowing)therefore they operate upwind of the volcano encountering minimal risk. A/C operating on set routes have no option but to fly in the jetstream due to fuel considerations…(too much fuel other than base line and diversion fuel costs money to carry and cuts into airline profits)so can’t reroute as freely as the observation a/c you saw on TV.

So sorry…no conspiracy this time…but I suppose we can still blame Iceland anyway…

Hugh…just my 2d input….I like the bottom one…nicely clean, simple and the dragon is eyecatching. Just for me I would have the phone number in there somewhere and maybe where your business is. It makes potential clients notice more if they see you are local and want to keep a bit of ‘local loyalty’.

I went yesterday for the first time therefore with an open mind. I found it very ‘user friendly’ with all and everyone exhibiting having the time to stop and chat. Whilst this was good for me one ‘major’ exhibitor did say things were very slow compared to last year. So all in all it was good for a ‘virgin’ sign show visitor…..and yes I did spend more than intended…. 😀

    That’s not fair……Jack is well known…. :lol1:

So to educate those who really don’t know Jack Schidt read on…

For some time many of us have wondered just who is Jack Schidt? We find ourselves at a loss when someone says, "You don’t know Jack Schidt" Well, thanks to my genealogy efforts, you can now respond in an intellectual way.

Jack Schidt is the only son of Awe Schidt.

Awe Schidt, the fertilizer magnate, married Miss O. Needeep They had one son, Jack.

In turn, Jack Schidt married Noe Idea (becoming Noe Schidt on marriage). The deeply religious couple produced six children: Holie Schidt, Giva Schidt, Fulla Schidt, Bull Schidt, and the twins Deap Schidt and Dip Schidt.

Against her parents’ objections, Deap Schidt married her cousin Dumb Schidt, a high school dropout. After being married 15 years, Jack and Noe Schidt divorced.

Noe Schidt later married Ted Sherlock, and, because her kids were living with them, she wanted to keep her previous name. She was then known as Noe Schidt Sherlock.

Meanwhile, Dip Schidt married Loda Schidt, and they produced a son with a rather nervous disposition named Chick N. Schitt.

Two of the other six children, Fulla Schidt and Giva Schidt, were inseparable throughout childhood and subsequently married the Happens brothers in a dual ceremony.

The wedding announcement in the newspaper announced the Schidt-Happens nuptials.

The Schidt-Happens children were Dawg, Byrd, and Hoarse. Bull Schidt, the prodigal son, left home to tour the world. He recently returned from Italy with his new Italian bride, Pisa Schidt.

Now when someone says, "You don’t know Jack Schidt," you can correct them.

    Sorry folks…I’ll get my coat…..

Not sure if this applies in this case but from past knowledge you had to get a ‘model release’ form signed to use specific images of a person commercially. If however the photograph used is a ‘general’ scene then this did/does not apply.

Any sign will be damage with impact, be it composite or correx.
so will any other material on the site, including the building itself, so do people purposely throw bricks at signs?

Just because its a construction site, doesn’t mean people destroy signage?

You must have ‘careful’ brickies and labourers in your area Peter… :lol1:

So if you know of any ‘brick proof’ substrates I’d be interested….steel sheet not allowed…

I have no idea why a building site should be perceived as more inappropriate for rigid plastic than any other location.
    Peter

My thinking was if the signs are in/on ‘thouroughfares/scaffolding/walkways etc’ with equipment/supplies being moved around there is the risk of ‘rigid’ plastic breaking on impact…particularly when cold in the winter. Hence my questioning if it was/is suitable or is there a more ‘impact’ resistant/more flexible product.

Based on my inexperience……but with assistance from the good folks here…. I wish to make an informed offer to my (hopefully) client which will, I hope, realise future …possibly bigger orders…..

I would find out if it is to be fixed direct onto a wall or hoarding…in which case 3 mill foamex would be ok

If it is to go on a frame or scaffolding where it wouldn’t be fully supported I would go for something more rigid

have you got any more info on it’s exact usage?

Thank you all for the replies.

Peter…I was merely asking about other products as I feel rigid plastic might be too easily broken on site and, as has been said, I would like to offer an option to his choice.

Glenn….The request was a fairly quick phone call tonight and I hope to have more info tomorrow……I will update here with more specifics when I have them.

Roger, try dong a search as this question has been asked a few times before.
Think you will find that as Brian has said the standards are pretty vague and as John has said most people just match the best they can from what ever vinyl range they use.

Have you had samples from various vinyl suppliers and decided on which range of vinyl you will be using on a daily basis ?

    Hi Martin,
Thanks for the reply. As I am still very much ‘new’ I’m using vinyl that came with the Graphtec as well as a batch of Mactac I bought to hone my ‘limited’ skills on.
I will have to contact some suppliers for swatches/samples to better assess what else is available.

Hi Peter….I’ve got a sample of what’s required. Just measured it and it’s 5mm thick for both indoor and outdoor use. Signage graphic will simply be cut vinyl…. 5-7 yr for durability. Fitting will simply be by drilling holes in the substrate and either screwing or using wire/plastic tiewraps done by the customer.
