    Nice one Ed’!

I like the white buffer around the dark blue text – gives it a bit of a boost!…stylish text and a nice logo…well done…easy to forget you’re still new to all this!

blimey Ed’! – if you need to wear glasses – and still be that close to see what you’re doin’…well, no wonder your normal photo shows you kinda’ squinting! πŸ˜› πŸ˜† πŸ˜†

I’ve not used it myself – but I believe there’s a part of Corel Trace that traces images as a woodcut?…I think, from memory, you can alter the angle of the ‘cut’, the thickness and detail too?….

    I’ll have a look and try it…

If you didn’t install the ‘trace’ module you may have to whack the CD back in and do so first…

    Personally I think it’s a bit ‘iffy’ – that is…

IF I like the sign company/people concerned, and

IF I can get a good professional hourly wage to justify being away from my own work, and

IF I’m gunna get paid pronto, and

IF the stuff I’m fitting isn’t crap!, and

IF it’s not for one of my existing customers, and

IF there is no liability on me or my business for any future fault with the sign…

Very true Phill – wise words!

Not my forte, but perhaps clear perspex round dowel(s) could be used as permanent posts – like little columns behind glued with clear adhesive…I still think you might see them as a slight ghost/shadow?…

Maybe if you had the letters made with returns (like a biscuit tin without the lid type of thing) so eash letter has a face and sides – the rear edge of which could then be glued to the face…

mmm? – Paul Davenport could probably help more with this?…

If I think of anything else today – I’ll post…

    only one observation…

with everything being in a relatively ‘soft and flowing’ style – I might have rounded the ends of the Black sausage and also reduced the amount of spare Black at either end a little…maybe even reduce the number/sausage group by 10% – to ensure it doesn’t ‘fight’ with the main title…

but hey! – nice looker nevertheless…

Phill’s right Tim…most of the small wrinkles and bubbles will go of their own accord, specially with a colour like dark Green that heats up quick in the sun.

The job looks fine. A margin around the edge would have helped with the general presentation but everything else will do fine for a first attempt at a BIG panel!

Don’t be put off by early setbacks…remember, the person who never makes mistakes – never makes anything!

Also, don’t forget that ‘foam’ signboard expands and contracts alarmingly in extremes of temperature. You might like to remind the customer that if large panels like these are going to be used outside without a frame then it might be prudent to bond them to a ply backing board to give ’em a bit of rigidity. Without it they will warp in the heat. Using a minimum 10mm thickness of board does reduce movement, particularly with dark colours – that get very hot in full sun!

    Well done anyway!

Enough of the velvet and the socks…OK!…am I the only one that uses Low Friction Sleeves? 😎

I’ve been using them for more than eight years now. The ‘SA-1’ Low Friction Sleeve is a paper sleeve specially made for application squeegees and gives a non-abrasive silky smooth edge without the loss of pressure or contact.

I wouldn’t use a squeegee without one – every day – every job! As the edge becomes ruffled or damaged you simply rotate the sleeve a little around the squeegee to bring a fresh part to the leading edge – so they last for ages. I believe the paper is impregnated with something but they are very smooth and very easy to use.

Made by 3M Graphics Division, I buy them from Spandex or Metamark and I think they’re about 25p per sleeve but not sure. They come five to an envelope and / or 20 envelopes to a box (as shown).

Anyway – try them and you won’t use anything else!

    Hi Gavin,

Many of us have CD’s and the like that have most world-wide manufacturers logos on including motorsport badges etc. – that’s not being pompous it’s just that you may not know such CD’s are available. Brian Hays who regularly visits this site belongs to a company called Impact Sign Services and they do such items.

Of course, the problem with super bikes and the big car companies is that they change their logos every season anyway – so it’s difficult to have everything up-to-date at your fingertips all the time anyway…

Here at the UKSG we do not infringe copyright material wherever possible. That’s not to say that we won’t help each other by giving and receiving the odd logo, font, or flourish etc. – but we try not to make a habit of it and it tends to be done privately between members.

Sorry if all this makes us sound like a bunch of old farts! – we’re not!

Look into the CD’s for yourself, they’re bloomin useful anyway – if you get genuinely stuck for something then do ask – and if you’ve any original artwork of your own that you want to share then post it up!

what impact it has – you can see this one turning heads as it goes down the street…and it’s a good example in responding to those people who would say “black and white signs are boring”…yeah right!

Only niggle would be that the small group of text and the main title text fight each other a bit as regards ‘what’s level?’….one of those live and learn things I think…

anyway, super job – really punchy for such a simple design…well done!

ok then – you brainy painty guy!…

what about putting down a white vinyl first (cheap)…scuff it all over with a ‘scotchbrite’ pad to key it…then one coat of dayglo paint…and then finish with a clear acrylic varnish/laquer that will dry in about 10 mins…this will give you a sheen’ surface wchich will then receive any further vinyl…

Good work Martin…always interested to see your work.

For my part, I like the tyre tread pattern and the tyres on the door. The whole design is big and bold, using this large space well. It’ll certainly get the guy noticed, yet it’s not too complicated or lavish which makes it a good use of vinyl.

I too, would have liked to see the phone number given a little more space around it, either by re-sizing it or by losing the ‘tel’ and the dashes etc. The more I look a this van – the more I keep looking at that tyre tread pattern…even to the point where I’m not looking first at the name. On reflection, I’m not sure I wouldn’t have done it grey just to take the ‘edge’ of it a little…

what the heck! – it’s a good looking job that does exactly what it says on the tin!

Another crackin’ design…I like the logo…a lot!

I believe I might try one of the numbers on the door significantly larger than the other – it might give a little variation in size and width to the door set. The only other thing struck me was – perhaps I’d make the two words ‘Tiling Specialist’ much more dominant within the logo to help get the message across…I know it’s a relatively small photo/mock-up (and yes, the logo is a dream!) but without the benefit or a legible supporting descriptive line, the meaning of it’s geometric lines and diamonds may not be immediately apparent from across the street…

…having said that, the strip of mosaic type tiles down the side does help a great deal in getting the message across – great use of this feature.

that’s it…now you hate me (or more likely you’ll just ignore me)… πŸ˜†

The bold, almost defiant ‘CS’ combined with the graceful highlights within. The freehand ‘Joinery’ is delightful and the ‘whip’ in the pin line adds movement and flair.

You do create some truly classic signwork…

Nice piece of work and easy to follow.

One suggestion though – watch out for those welds that leave just the bits oand pieces of a shadow, like you showed last of all, those pieces can be really finnicky to align properly – you’re better off making an outline to the original text (just by a few mm’s) and then welding that to the underlying colour. This leaves you with the same pieces – only they stand away from the text just a little making it easier to align them.

    great work Tim!

Welcome George!…and good luck with your new equipment.

I don’t use Signgo either but I think the member Kevin Wallace who visits here is the MD of the comany that distrbutes it – or something like that?!

Perhaps he could help you…most sign and graphics packages will do solid (‘Block’) shadows – perhaps the version of SignGo you have needs an upgrade?….

Corel will also do this but depending on the version you have, the process differs.

Depends when you need to do this and how?…if you get stuck then maybe I, or someone closer to you, could help by quickly doing the shadowed text you need and giving/sending it to you on a floopy disc in a universal format – like *.AI

SignGo’s website address is http://www.signgo.com but then you probably already new that! πŸ˜›

SignGo(full version) is $349 (about Β£230) and can be downloaded and bought on-line – I think?! If it’s as good as it makes-out then maybe this pick-up truck job would pay for it?…

August 19, 2002 at 10:40 pm in reply to: does anyone use polyester foils 5-7?

I’ve used foils a few times – outside too!

I know what it says in the manufacturers guidleines about not using it outside for long term signage…but…if you don’t try – you don’t know!

Used it on my own car once – lasted about three years. Fabulous effect, just simple text but in chrome – boy did it make people look!

I did use gold foil on a sign for a social club in our village. It was used for the main block text together with a red shadow on a black painted sign about 4′ x 1′ in size. That was back in about 1995 and it’s still there – in one piece! The entire sign is on the shaded side of the building, tucked-up tight under the eaves and guttering, partially overgrown with ivy. I suppose being almost covered up like it is, the UV, rain and everything else has just never got to it!

I’ve noticed that the foils I’ve used prefer a totally flat surface and a good one at that – like a car panel or other vinyl below. When it does start to ‘go’ it begins to dimple all over – which in itself is a nice effect as it looks a little like a hammered metal finish. Then, finally it begins to edge-lift and seperate from its backing.

The foil for the social club sign would have come from Victory Design and the foil for my car was from Metamark…anyway, it can last outside – I think it just depends on the application and a bit of luck too.

    No – actually Phill – we’re not!

Since posting this both Clare and I have decided it would be too big a jump and besides I really want something digital just to experiment with first of all…so now we are looking seriously at the Roland PC600 machine which I think would be better for this.

I love cut vinyl, its’ tactile qualities, depth of colour, design discipline, construction and a lot more too! but I am a real lover of technology too and am intrigued by the further possibilities offered by digital – or at least combining the two to greater effect.

To me, digital isn’t just about printing pictures but about simply getting more from every single square metre of vinyl – not to mention creating traditional and contemporary designs more easily. I particularly like the clarity and character definition you get with cut-vinyl and I’m sure a digital machine could help reduce both the time and cost in re-creating such designs straight to a single skin of vinyl. Everytime I go to a sign show I despair at all the bright green tree-frogs, fast cars and bottles of pop churned out in ever greater numbers by ever larger machines and keep thinking to myself ‘you’re missing the point’!

Anyway, for now, I’d like to look at getting something at a ‘reasonable’ price to have a play with over the coming months…

Hi Steve…thanks for filling in your profile and gettin’ stuck -in!…you’re very welcome here.

I have a Graphtec machine which is a bit of a running joke cus it won’t die! – tried torching it, slappin’ it about – hell I’ve even unplugged it but it still keeps going! πŸ˜‰

Thing is – I’ve only ever had the one machine – it’s done over 10 years now!…but in a way it’s like only ever having one girlfriend or one car…you’ve nothing to compare it too!

I read something the other night (on the Roland site I think it was) that mentioned two types of cutter; ‘cut to use’ and ‘cut to pay’…or something like that…I thought that was a nice way to sum up that there are different types of machine – those that are built to do hard work and those to do bits and pieces for yourself. Be careful you don’t buy the later unless that’s what you want.

Cost is the key and the sum you mention should get you a reasonable machine but only just! – not being funny…a good Gerber or Graphtec plotter is likely to be Β£2000-Β£3000 +VAT so you’re just about there. remember, sometimes it’s better to buy good gear slightly second hand than to buy cheap stuff new!

Anyway, others will no doubt have more information and perhaps even contacts and deals etc. but good luck and let us know how you get on.

    Stunning work Andy!

I noticed the change of colour on the shadow from grey to burgundy?…sweet 😎

Never thought of using straight black as the return colour on the banners – but I will now! πŸ˜‰

The pink is fine by me…I sometimes put a smaller white hotspot within the pink to give a hard ‘glint’ to it and this also dilutes the pink a wee bit…but it looks fine.

    I like it – a lot!

all right! – all right! – keep yer hair on!…lol

Listen, I’ll tell ya what happens shall I…I log on and see a few messages to read so I read a couple and then I take a call or summut, log off or sometimes just refresh the homepage without thinking and before you know it all the ‘posts since your last visit’ are wiped and you have to search throught for anything new – that’s when you miss posts like I did this one…sorry mate… πŸ˜•

It’s a real ba***rd when this happens – dodgy paint…did one recently. I’d barely got two phrases down when I said to the guy “look – best you take it away and get it done properly and I’ll not charge you for the wasted 30 mins. and the two phrases – which I’ll re-cut”.

So he did, and a Β£500 respray later he came back to have a couple of hundred quids worth of simple text applied! – I hate cheap paint jobs but I felt I did the right thing by him anyway.

Nice job Martin – a good working design and the graphic is a nice touch too! – though I do get the sense of things being a little fragmented with ‘KB’, ‘Garden Services’ and the Tel. number all sort of ‘avoiding’ each other a little…no big deal though… πŸ˜‰ keep ‘um coming!

Hey Eddie – I think ‘bugger’ is the word you’re looking for!…lol

Don’t worry about the spellin’ thing mate, just ring ‘um up and make a joke of it – most people would see the funny side! Blimey, I made a right mess or the word ‘courteously’ just recently, and it spent at least a couple of months on the van before someones young lad noticed!!! [gulp – pistol to temple]

nice looking work by the way – sweet…real sweet!

…and in a nutshell – import into Corel Photopaint or Paint ShopPro etc, then re-sample (or re-size) the image to about 650 pixels width whilst ensuring you ‘link’ the proportions so that the height of the image re-sizes to suit also, then export the new image as either a GIF or JPG and use it instead…

first off – you’re right – I didn’t think to say I do this on 6mm board and secondly, the hole drilled is only about 15-20mm in depth….

oh – nearly forgot – small point, but, to ensure the sign hangs truly vertical try and make sure the fishing line is to the side of each hole as you peg it NOT the front or back of the hole (that is – NOT towards the front or back face of the sign)…

July 2, 2002 at 9:39 pm in reply to: Shadow nightmare

    Jill…

    the answer is…don’t weld!

If I understand you correctly you’re creating a shadow to compliment some text then selecting them both and performing a ‘std’ weld and then having problems re-aligning them on the vehicle or sign…

This is known as ‘in-laying’ and whilst it is used in a few situations – this is not usually one of them. The vinyl is so thin that it’ll change shape slightly just from the pressure of your squeegee and it’s very difficult to match the pieces up!

    Do this…

    decide on your text…

create the shadow to go with it…

DON’T weld them …just seperate them on screen and cut each in the chosen colour.

Apply the shadow and then (preferably using transparent application tape – so you can see what you’re doing!) apply the text directly over the top – NO GAPS!

As Brian said – sometimes a visual gap around the text is another quite normal alternative and can look attractive as the gap colour adds ‘another’ feature to the text in question…to get this effect do this:

Select both the text and shadow on screen. Next, click on the weld button down the left hand side and out will pop the weld options. Then, click on the last option (far right with the letters ‘IL’). This is the In-Lay weld option.

Another box will appear that depicts the media (another name for the panel) and the different coloured vinyls that will be placed on it – remember this is shown in cross section. So our example depicts the media with, first down – the dark green shadow followed by the lighter green text on top. Choose what gap you want between the text and shadow in the box marked ‘bleed distance’ (notice the negative value -3mm) and then click OK.

Alternatively you could ‘surround’ the text by extending the shadow around it…this is simply an option shown as ‘oultine’ during the normal block shadow process…this too would be cut without welding and then applied so as to leave dark green showing around the text.

Hope that helps…anything else just ask! πŸ˜‰

I’m gunna think about this one Steve – I like a challenge πŸ˜• lol!

One initial thought would be to silk-screen a design onto one-way window film – that silver foil like stuff for vehicles…but I don’t know whether the silk-screened maze design on the inside (reflective foil side) would then be too visible from the outside (the see through side)?

it could be applied to thin acrylic sheet and spot-bonded to the existing glass…maybe…?

P.S. You’re right in that the UKSG is indeed a wonderful site, however, contrary to your observation about it being the only such site, Rob and I, not to mention Grahame Belton, Phill Fenton, Adrian at Signrite and many others have worked together before. We have both run and actively contributed to other similar sites that were, in recent years, just as popular and well known throughout the trade as this one. Though the UKSG, with its core membership of independent signmakers and unique buying group advantages, is without doubt, the finest yet…

Sorry to have to say this Paul, but, I find your last post offensive. As a moderator here I would expect you to have a more enlightened opinion regarding all aspects of signmaking – including cut vinyl – and respect for those who are new to the trade. Furthermore I count several women sign makers here and wouldn’t presume for a moment that everyone new to the trade with a computer was a ‘guy’!

I, for one, had no formal training whatsoever and indeed started out with no more than a “…PC and some sticky back plastic…” (as you put it!). Yet you suggest that I and others like me are in some way responsible for problems within the trade. Problems, I might add, that are no different today than they used to be. Historically every painter and decorators’ apprenticeship included some tuition in signwriting, and they too would then offer all manner of signwork on the strength of just a few weeks training…

It maybe that you didn’t mean it in quite that way – but I found it unpalatable and I’m sure a great many others will too…
