There are a number of products sold by most sign supply companies. Whatever you use, it is always a good idea to test a small piece of the acrylic to make sure that the remover doesnt react with it in any way.

I like the cheaper repair idea Andrew.
Rodney, the model is a Laser Pro Mercury 30 watt machine. I have no experience working on this so I realise I am looking at a steep learning curve. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    I think not

Even if you can make this in one piece – how will you transport it to the site and install it? You need to factor this into the cost also.

(Anything is possible providing the client is prepared to pay for the cost of what are often unrealistic expectations)

Quite right Phil. Plus install will always be more with at least two cherry pickers and operators or even scaffolding with permissions etc. This all adds up. Funny how the client can live with a join when he sees the estimate

Black white and blue shirts for us.
Black, white, red, pink and blue material.
We have built up a good stock of flex over the years so can cover most requirements. We have also built up a stock of shirts and colours also.

It took a while but it is now a case of replenishment as opposed to start up.

    David,
You seem to be talking yourself out of garment supply.
The initial cost for stock really is minimal. As has been said, 2 – 3 hundred pound investment would give you a nice inventory of shirts / hoodies etc. Storage is really not that bad unless you are working in your box room at home. Even then, they don’t take up that space.
Anyone who gets a van liveried with us gets a free t shirt with sharp pricing for further orders.

    It works

  • We have a local metal fabricator who makes larger trays for us in Aluminum.. He can weld and then finish so the weld is invisible. Main problem is finding one with an oven big enough for powder coating. You might have to paint to give you a base colour.
Have a look for local fabricators. Not cheap but if this is what the client wants, he will have to pay.

Graham, speed is an issue. We also travel to shows on behalf of our clients and supply branded goods on site for delegates, consumers etc. The DTG machines we looked at did not lend themselves to being moved around in an exhibition trailer from point to point. ALL the companies we talked to indicated they could do this, but when pressed, they would not categorically promise it could be done.

Our daily rate is lower than yours but we could be producing large numbers over the course of a weekend. Staff to weed cost a great deal less than potential costs and headaches caused by the DTG option.
I really would like to have one but cannot justify the expense. I would rather replace the JV3 at this time.

We have been considering the DTG dilemma ourselves. I cannot make the numbers work. The quantity needed to make it pay in a reasonable time makes it more viable to produce in screen format. I understand the low volume short run advantages of the concept but feel that the transfer quality from some of the suppliers is pretty good now. Yes you need to contour cut and weed but this is a small price to pay for reasonably low cost per shirt and the massively lower cost of entry. DTG machines are expensive and temperamental. Not a mass production machine yet.

    |Just my opinion and experience tho 🙂

    Peter

  • Use both the oracal and metamark. The oracal is a bit more conformable and is easier to fit. Our printer (JV3) prints perfectly onto this. not totally opaque so the reflectiveness still works.

It is easy for us to undervalue our time and experience. But we paid to get the experience and our time is as valuable as the next person. You have a greater value than you might think Lorrainne and need to charge accordingly. If you lose them to cheaper competitors perhaps you didnt need them anyway.

Take the £50.00 and the sign and move on wiser from the experience.

Don’t lose sleep over it now, the ex customer is not worth it.

As John rightly says. The chinese products can work well but need much time, effort and patience to get them running. John has great experience in that arena so is talking with some knowledge.
We have a Laserpro which was supplied new by Graphityp. Talk to Nigel there. Thing is, Lasers are limited when it comes to metals. Any anodised or coated metals are fine but many stainless or polished cannot be done without some preparation. Having said that, our engraver is used every day and has paid for itself within 12 months. It has a steep learning curve and we are learning its capabilities everyday.

£4000 wont get you a new machine I suspect

If the design is really tight to the edge of panels i will always measure to be sure. I have done many designs and relied on the drawings for sizing as long as they are not too close to the edges of the panels etc. The impact outlines are the best in my opinion but as good as they are, they are not 100% accurate. I think you will find Brian would agree that they are pretty close but if measurement is critical, go measure the vehicle!!

I agree with Rob. I would have thought if they are new boxes and chassis, it would be better for the client to have the boxes painted to match. You could then livery them afterwards. With the best will in the world, you may face problems later with this. If it were my client, I would recommend paint and then livery.

    Nate,
As has been said, wrapping is a tricky business until you get a few vehicles under your belt. It is a good idea to practice on your own vehicle to begin with. Problem is you can waste LOADS of time and material trying to get it right. Working in the dark as it were. Try and make the effort to get on a course. They range from 2 to 3 hundred pounds upwards and are worth the investment. I would suggest a few months experience honing your basic skills before attending a course however. Have you been fitting vinyl long as this is important for you to grasp some of the techniques?

Good luck though as it is very satisfying to wrap a vehicle.

Yes I agree with you also. Perhaps my comment was a bit general. I know from experience however that it is difficult to compete with some of the auction site vendors as they use cheap materials and cut corners. Unfortunately for the coinsumer it is too late when they have spent the money and received inferior goods. I know we meet that challenge in all businesses, but I feel to do it right, the investment is needed and it can be a long slog to make a profit. I do accept it can be done of course.

I wish I was making 5k a month on my sales of wall art however!

    Simon,
I think the answer has already been given to you. The considered opinion of those that have posted is that you cannot do an acceptable job with the equipment you have suggested. Solvent print is the only way to go. There is no cheap way to produce quality.

I am in this business and I can assure you that you will not be able to compete on price or quality by using the equipment you propose.

If new is out of your budget, you can find used kit with warranty from any of the suppliers listed on this forum. Additionally, they will sell you a service contract which will cover any breakdowns you are likely to experience. Failing that, you could find a local printer who could print your work for you until you can afford a new machine.
As a footnote, if you are thinking you can make a living just selling wall decals, you might be in for a surprise. You will need to augment your income with other work. This fact just supports the choice of a solvent cut and print machine over any other.

Good Luck in your business venture.

Hi Chris it is a problem. We use a bean bag or bean seat, the type you just throw on the floor. It is sometimes as I am sure you know, a two man job, just for what seems to be a stupidly small panel. That’s where the additional cost mounts up as you have two to pay for.

I’m working with a local metalworker in fabricating some type of adjustable jig that we can attach the panels to and hopefully wrap them that way. I’ll keep you posted.

Yes I don’t mind the smaller bits as they are a challenge. The tanks can be a nightmare. I know of people who wrap them in one but many need two or three pieces.

I love doing them but you never get the real amount for the time spent.

It was a bit daunting but it actually went quite well. As with most motorcycle tanks, they can be a bit difficult to wrap in one piece. This tank had three pieces but we were able to hide them on curves etc. Much harder to do these small fiddly panels than a bonnet!

We have done a few now though so are in the groove. We love wrapping bikes.

I am sure I won’t be speaking out of turn if I tell you that I know the family would be touched by all the comments.

Although I haven’t been in touch with them for 11 months, I still hold them dear to me. I think of John every day at least once or twice and miss him a great deal. Life moves on and I know he would have something to say to me now to the effect of ‘get on with it and stop mooching around.’
I do, but it is difficult to do with so much still to get over. Time will help us all, and as silly as it sounds, I read his texts to me quite often and usually end up having a good laugh as he had such a good insight to life and the people who he shared his with on a day to day basis.

I lifted a glass to him last night and shed a tear.

Im not that qualified to say. If it was me, I would leave it for a while at least until the fan has stopped. It might kick in by then. Once they get up, there are a few Mac people on here who will be much more help than me!

No. Look at the advice. Perspex not the best material for this. Any reason it was used. What type of sign is it? What’s on it? Could you use Di Bond? Many questions but little info given. Can you give more info to help with advice?

That should do it. I can only sat when my powerbook is working harder, the fan comes on and it slows down until it ‘catches ‘up. Not much help i’m afraid.

Sounds as if the Mac is working hard. What are the specs? Is there enough RAM etc to run bigger print jobs?

    Just a thought

couldn’t agree more Rob. The water mark is useful when the reflective is used as it is intended. When its being used as an integral part of a design not so good. As this application is not to conform with traffic regulations but merely as an aesthetic addition, I will be using the most conformable without the water mark. Like the sound of easy strippability though!

Sounds interesting Chris. I assume this is also printable?
Where is the watermark and what size does it come in if you don’t mind me asking?

    Hi Rod,
This is just for looks. It will serve no purpose in terms of the road traffic act at all.

    Thanks

Lotus Cortina? One of the most famous out there. Or have a look at the gold leaf colours.

Gold Leaf is very striking and iconic. It will grace my MX-5 when the restoration is finished.

We tend to charge a flat fee for basic design work. We then tell the client if he goes ahead with the work we will deduct the design fee from the final amount. This helps a little as we do not give a final price until the artwork is finalised. We also make sure the client understands we own the drawings and content at all times and that they are copyrighted.

It is easy to get caught this way as the need for work is always present. I think you have to set your terms out up front and abide by them. You might lose the odd client but it is worth it as the ones you keep know your terms and become good clients.

Just my take on it all.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I need about 20 metres so will probably go with the Metamark printable reflective and print a grey wash and the cut out text as needed.

Thanks for the offer Chris but I need quite a bit.

    Thanks again all

Sorry but I dont agree with discount just to keep him happy.
    Either:
The print is acceptable so he should pay the price and install it.
    or
The print is not acceptable so he should return it and get a refund.
    or
The print is unacceptable so return it, get it done to his specs and he pay the price for the higher spec.

If its installed, then it was acceptable. If they installed it, surely they would have realised it was not in one piece?

You perhaps should have explained the two options to him before taking the job and the deposit.
    Just my opinion

Perfect Phil. The customer has approved this new logo this morning. Apparently the NHBC logo is now a rectangle with a tick over the letters N and H if anyone has this.

Nice one Kev. Simple but to the point. Sometimes clients must understand they are responsible adults who have to admit they make mistakes sometime.

    Thanks for posting.

    I’m with Dave.
Fill it in and get them to fill the top section in. They might not be as enthusiastic if they think they might share responsibility. Seems like a glorified risk assessment to me. I usually put a risk assessment together for the job and submit that with a copy of my liability insurance certificate. Usually does the job.

Could be a conspiracy tho’ Phil 😕

    quote Turk Erhamza:

Amari do a product from Arlon. DPF 8000. It sticks like you know what to a blanket. Expensive though and only comes in 720 x 1200 I think although they will split it for you.

    Peter

The 8000 should be 1370mm x 50yards, unless they cut is down after they get it. Great product; perfect for that application.

Mactac and 3m have a similar product. Radecal signs and graphics just went with some of the Mactac for the side of their building and it turned out great.

Use wall-wrap or engineering grade film when searching for these products.

Correct I get it cut down to two widths, expensive stuff as they wont split it without selling you the whole roll
