  • Thoughts & Advice on vehicle templates?

Posted by Nick Tunstill on June 23, 2011 at 11:23 am

Being new to this I have got a dvd with most of the vehicle outlines in illustrator which I use for my layouts. I have done graphics for three vans with curved edge panels using the templates.

I find I the overall panel size is reasonably good but I have to trim the corners to the actual shape of the panel. Luckily I am ok with a scalpel and hand cutting but it would be better if the template cuts were spot on. Normally they come out slightly oversize.
Is it me or are they not particularly accurate?
    Thanks
    Nick

They should only be used as a guide Nick

Yes, great thing those outlines, however I ALWAYS print the design and go to measure every panel up and cross reference. Also, it is good to size up all those recesses to know what you are up against. Learned the hard way (one way that really gets your attention if nothing else)…

I always regard the outlines as great for customer approval but don’t bet the farm on their accuracy, always measure the panel.

Like the others have said they are only a guide and panels should be physically measured rather than work from the outlines.
I keep a record of true sizes for the panels so once I have measured a particular van once I don’t need to do it again. Comes in handy if you have to cut stuff without seeing the van.

If the design is really tight to the edge of panels i will always measure to be sure. I have done many designs and relied on the drawings for sizing as long as they are not too close to the edges of the panels etc. The impact outlines are the best in my opinion but as good as they are, they are not 100% accurate. I think you will find Brian would agree that they are pretty close but if measurement is critical, go measure the vehicle!!
