Hi all, can anyone help please.

A customer of mine has asked us to look at putting some graphics onto his 1976 ford cortina track day car he is building.

My initial thought was to do something of that period with a modern twist perhaps, but having done some research there doesn’t seem to be any ford cortinas used for racing….certainly not part of any Ford Racing Team

    Anyone help or advise please?

    Cheers
    Stephen

Lotus Cortina? One of the most famous out there. Or have a look at the gold leaf colours.

Gold Leaf is very striking and iconic. It will grace my MX-5 when the restoration is finished.

The thing is at the moment i have no idea on what we may do with the design, i haven’t even begun to do anything.

What i thought to start with would be to find some pictures of cars of that era, maybe if there was a ford racing team livery and then try and put a modern twist on it, but i can’t find anything to do with cortinas racing…..maybe they didn’t??

Anyway i will keep searching and when i get started with the design i will update the post

    Cheers

As far as I know the Mk3 Cortina was not a popular choice as a base for a race car.

The Mk3 was used as a police car so maybe a police car theme would be worth considering? Being a track day car this should cause a bit of a stir and is in keeping with the mind set of track day events which is for everyone to have a bit of fun.

It’s got to have a black vinyl roof what ever you do :lol1:

I think you’ll just have to look at racing cars from that era and use that as your base, I don’t think the Cortina was one of the better handling cars, always a bit flappy at the back end as I remember and I don’t remember them being used for racing by the ford team, more the Escort.

By the time of the Mk3/4 Cortina Ford were committed to the Mk2 Escort in both rallying and circuit racing. I think the only example of that Mk of Cortina racing was in South Africa.
The works Lotus Cortinas never competed in Gold Leaf colours, however it was successfully raced in it’s Mk 2 form by Alan Mann Racing’s Frank Garner in their red and gold livery.

Off home now, I’ll try and find some reference to the liveries used by competing cars in the middle 70’s tonight – which’ll probably be a bit more helpful.

What’s the base colour of the car, as that will dictate the design – unless you plan on wrapping it? If black, JPS scheme every time 😎

Most of the competing cars of the period tended toward the big bold wide stripes, particularly in the UK, some of the more innovative designs were on the German cars. Vinyl in those days was in it’s infancy and most product stickers were screen printed and individual letters were frequently cut by hand
Some pics of typical designs as below, hope these are of some help
