    Hi Jody

We print large drum scanned files thru versaworks for a local car museum…but it doesn’t do 500MB – just stops printing. Only way is to reduce the file size either in photoshop or we have found importing into corel, then reducing the size of the image by 50 pct and allowing the DPI to stay high – then resave as a.bmp (or .pdf) will reduce the size of the file by at least two thirds. Then open in versaworks and resize to 200 pct and presto the rip is happy and no loss of image quality…job done 😛

    HI Simon

Custom Cut is a feature of Versaworks where you can split the job into smaller batches…say two rows instead of 20 and the job then print two rows…cuts the two rows…prints two more and so on – sort of fixes Rolands natural inaccuracies.

    Hi Jon

Have been cutting on the vehicle for years – make sure your blade is wet (lick it) and lightly drag (don’t press) freshly snapped blade…have a few practices and you will be surprised how easy it is.

Otherwise there is knifeless tape ( http://knifelesstechsystems.com/Products.aspx ) which we have been using for a short time – it works extremely well for long cuts and the easy way to make the perfect overlap 😀 😀

I had a similar problem with my SOLJET Pro II (same basic machine as yours) and went thru all the things you have plus a heap more. Problem persisted until I bit the bullet and put closed cartridges back into the machine. My other machine is an SP540 and its happy as larry on bulk feed. A mate of mine who is a Roland tech said I would have issues with the Pro II on bulk feed… and he was correct (again!!). He has seen quite a few over the last few years with the same issue and it is nearly always the temperamental nature of the machine. Later Rolands don’t seem to have these issues. So good luck, you may find a solution…but I’m picking you have to change back too 😮

    Hi Ebrahim

This can happen with bulk feed systems when the ink level is higher than the head height level and the temperature in your print room is above 30 deg C.
Are you on bulk feed or is your print room very hot?

I had a similar problem on my SP540V a while ago . The problem ended up being a failing data cable. Cable replaced and problem solved…along with a couple of other minor niggles which we (the techos and I) thought were more to do with the scan strip or reader (nearly stuffed the strip taking it in and out…cleaning and turning…temperamental machines when they start to age!!!)

Its a clear tape like stone guard applied to the edge of the helicopters rotors for protection – has a special adhesive to withstand the environment it operates in.. the helicopters we do operate in Laos, Western Australia, NZ and Antarctica…dust thru to ice and all in between

Simon, we have too – same results as Jason, colour not up to dyesub standard (lots of bleeding on some materials which you can offset with a heatgun as it prints…not too much heat though or you will set off the overheat trip)

We don’t bother any more – sub out to a few locals with dyesub machines or mostly send the files to contacts in China and have the finished garments/flags back in two weeks and half the price or less of local.

It is a big growth market…but not for us… under current market conditions China rules.

    Hi All

This has been absolutely devastating – being such a small country, everyone knows people down there. Once we found out about it here in Nelson we spent the next few hours contacting family to check they were alright. As so many were doing the same the telecom systems (land and cell) were all overloaded so we didn’t get hold of the last one of our family until after 7pm – and couldn’t get thru to the mother in law at all (home trashed) but got the OK from my daughter in Brisbane via Facebook (got a few friends over 50 now signing up).

I have had calls today from friends from two sign shops and they and their families are safe but won’t be back at work anytime soon…they are all in shock and survival mode with no water. One of my brother in laws has just sent his wife and daughters up here to nelson – he is a council surveyor so will be very busy over the next few months. The whole disaster has been a bit surreal viewing from afar and not being able to help other than offer a safe house away from the quaking.

Check out this link for a bit of an idea of the extent of the devastation
    http://www.news.com.au/world/christchur … 6010081646
It has been heartwarming to see the specialist help arriving from Australia, singapore, Japan, UK, USA and other countries.

This pic was taken by someone from the Christchurch hills just as the earthquake struck http://i.imgur.com/0vZbD.jpg

The death toll now stands at 98 with over 200 still missing (120 believed under the rubble of the worst collapse – the CTV building which unfortunately also caught fire meaning many who survived succumed to smoke)

    Hi Juma

You are using 3rd party inks? Have the cartridges got roland cartridge chips in them?

Have you turned the machine off at the wall and pulled the plug (there is a trickle charge in all power supplies and to clear some electronic issues, like USB ports not working etc., you must kill the power completely before doing restarts…not just powering down the machine.

If that doesnt work, then hold the keys down when you turn the machine off so that even if it restarts by itself they are held down for the restart

    Do you have SKYPE

    Hi Juma

Before you go buying parts – often this error is fixed by resetting the tool carriage (a head strike of similar can throw the alignment out very easily)

    Turn off machine

Hold down Left, Up and Right arrows while restarting, press enter…

this should disconnect the tool carriage from the print head and it will ask ‘align head’ (can’t remember if you press enter again now or after the next step…but you will figure it when you do it)

then slowly push the tool carriage all the way to the left – until the knife is activated

the press enter and the carriage will come back to the print head and reset the whole unit and turn off

Turn machine back on and should be all good to go
    🙂 🙂

Hi all – the problem is not getting money to fix everything…it is all about getting the bureaucrats off their backsides to get the jobs done in a timely fashion — latest estimates on time line to get the consents processed just to have the condemned residential properties rebuilt is over FOUR years under the current way the councils process them. Government is going to look at legislation in ‘URGENCY’ to absolve the councils from blame if they speed up the process (ie use common sense!!) and end up with the odd stuff up…here is hoping that it happens and flows on to the rest of the country!!

On a better note..Shane – what is your itinery – are you passing thru Nelson at all?

    Hi Warren

Probably not – usually a single pass print looks washed out when lit…so if the signs are next to one another, you will have some compromise to make. I have a lightbox set up in the workshop to test prints before making the final print. It very much depends on the colours involved (ie pastels and lighter colours need less enhancing than darker/richer ones). We have an SP540 and I usually print off the colour chart pages for the colours involved in both 2x overprint and also once with return to origin..allow to dry and reprint again. This gets mes close to the shade of colour that closely resembles the unlit colour/s and retains a strong colour for when lit. Sometimes you get lucky and it all looks OK (better to have colours close when unlit because as long as other signage is unlit or some distance away no one will remeber/expect exact colours at night as long as they are closeish and look good). Good luck 😀

Can you post a clear photo – is the grey a true grey or has it got some colour casting? If so, you may have to change your dot pattern if the profile you are using will allow it. Another thing to try is to turn the grey part to a bitmap (like you would with a blend if its giving you banding/stepping instead of a smooth blend)

Also make sure the encoder strip isn’t touching the reader anywhere as it travels along…had the same issue this week – changed the strip…printed perfectly for about three metres, the did a bit of staircasing…so I stopped the machine. When I started it #@%!!! .. same error. Got out the Grandad glasses & torch and noticed that the strip appeared to touch in just one place…adjusted the reader and shes my little darling again!!

And, make sure that the capping station is back in place..often that error message comes between the capping station lowering and the pump doing its little suck…so if the pump didn’t get to do its thing, then the capping station will still be in the lowered position.

    Hi Chris

Try checking the settings on your machine MENU at the control panel…there are adjustments you can make there – they are self explanatory (and an AUTO ADJUST in amongst them which I would only use as a last resort)

After you have made adjustments set up a file with a 1cm filled box with a cut line LEFT, CENTRE & RIGHT of your max media width to see if the cut error is the same right across the width…it usually isnt – and that can only be corrected thru the settings in your menu

November 25, 2008 at 6:53 am in reply to: SP540V: Banding in vinil high speed

We get banding on our SP540V when printing in draft mode – particularly with blues and yellows…The main reason is that the heads spit out the ink in the reverse order on the return pass (The new epson 4C heads seem to have overcome this judging by what I have seen in output from the new Mimakis).

Changing the dampers to the large ones has improved the banding issue a little (remember the 540 is really a supersized 300) so I guess having a minuscule more ink pressure helps. Sometimes doing an environment match helps a little too

But at the end of the day, if you are printing in fast mode … the sign is going to be short term/budget…so you gets what you pays for and banding is one of the xtras and no extra charge!!!

Since changing to Jet Best, my previous supplier has come to the party with bulk supply at a reasonable rate. So now I am using my original inks for good work (saves having to set up new profiles) and the Jest Best for real estate and show/short term signs. Too soon for UV test results for me (have a mate doing an accelerated UV test) but only difference to the other ink is slightly longer drying time and more vibrant reds & blues plus a real ‘black’ black.

Here is more BS – hot off the press – these guys will never run out of a job!!!

    Dear Service Provider,

Due to global alignment ExxonMobil Retail AP are introducing the requirement for Hard Hats on site-clarification is listed below. Our ANZ introduction is to be completed by 20 October 2008. This gives you plenty of time to revise all your JSAs and Risk Assessments, as well as meet your requirements for workplace consultation. What about bump hats? No- they do meet the requirements.

Why the 20 October? We are having a SHE Conference at The Langham in Melbourne on the 14 & 15 October where we will reinforce the requirement for Hard Hats. Details to follow on the up coming event. Australian SHE Managers should pencil this into their busy schedules.
A 2 slide Powerpoint is attached above that contains the message below-

New Ruling for Maintenance and Repair works on ExxonMobil Service Stations
    rks o
    • A Contractor who does Maintenance and Repair works on an ExxonMobil site will always wear a Hard Hat when working on the forecourt or in the carwash.
    • The use of a Hard Hat, inside the shop, is still applicable whenever deemed necessary from an operational/legal point (e.g. for insulation purposes when working with electricity, when the risk exists for falling objects, etc)

    • When triggered by site and task specific conditions (Site specific JSA/SPSA)

    Important Note:
Hard Hats must conform to Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1801. Bump caps do not comply with this standard. Chin straps must be used for working at heights. Consider the use of vented hard hats in high temperature areas. Consider the use of safety hat wide brims as an addition in areas where high UV is experienced.n ExxonMobil Service stations
Please give me a call if you have any questions. What colour helmets? Well, hi vis and white are good but avoid green or red unless you are a fire warden or a site first aid officer!

Unless there is a reasonable expectation of significant business in the future…ignore them 😮 A mate of mine does just signage installation and one of his clients is Mobil… they had to have all of that and now they even specify what he has to wear on their sites plus a whole lot of other BS – he did a decal change on a pump the other day and
    – had to wear long trousers, hi-viz vest and special gloves
    – park his van next to the pump as a barrier and cone off the area as well
    – remove a 300mm x 60mm decal (couldn’t do it with the gloves on, so removed them – very naughty)
    – apply the new decal

…. so including the intro to the service station manager, hazard check, set up, job completion and packing up – job took just over an hour and if he had been seen with his gloves off by one of the roving mystery inspectors, could have been black listed from doing Mobil work!!!

The world gets more bizarre every day as we allow people who don’t actually do any real work dictate to us with regulations that justify their existence …. unless there is a real good reason to comply – IGNORE them and eventually we will reclaim the world (hot) (:) 👿

We usually use japan max to get better greys, but that is with our own profile…probably worth a go though. To get true greys, we have found the only way is to convert the black and grey to greyscale and use Japan max – is sometimes a bit hit and miss if there is also colour in the print as you are trying to make the machine print conflicting processes.

We have been thru a few recessions and just started another one – look after your good customers and remember that people become more discerning in how they spend their precious dollars/pounds when things tighten up.. Signies are their saviours as we add heaps more value for a much longer period than any other form of advertising (other than word of mouth)…so look to ad value and you’ll still be there when things loosen up again…and you will have stronger and more appreciative customers to boot.

We find that on some things the ink is not durable enough – especially when it is subject to a lot of rubbing…so we use a mask and spray with vinyl upholstery paint (talk to your local automotive shop) and that works very well

Hi Shane – are you talking about the ‘heater’ or the ‘dryer’ – I run my heater on 38-42 – because my front door opens into the room the printer is in, its on 42 at the moment… summertime 40 and that is while running aircon too. At 50 it will sometimes overheat on long print runs – not a good look if the print is 7/8 thru!! And I run the dryer 40 – 45 (45 at the moment)

Hi Jason – we regularly print on to Oracal 751 – particularly the metallic silver and gold – with ecosol…. crank up the drying heat 5 degrees or so.

Have used others (Mactac, Avery and 3M) and all work OK – some take a wee bit longer to dry.

Not only has the price of diesel been going up, but the differential to petrol is rapidly eroding …and …today the twits in power put up the cost of road user tax by 7 – 10% (yes another tax we kiwis pay…this one is for diesel users – rate based on the tare weight of their vehicle) 👿 👿 👿

I have a few mates who are truckies and don’t be surprised if you see protests like they have been having in Europe – they are not thinking or just talking about it… they are sorting out dates to do it!! (:) (:)

Giday Derek – we have printed heaps onto APA truck vinyl with ecosol inks on the 540 – pretty much bullet proof. Only other vinyl that works OK for us on wheel covers is LG cast. If its just lettering or simple logo, we usually cut a mask and ink it. 😀

Sean – when I started 15 years ago we had 18 sign shops servicing less than 60,000 people (plus a few lifestylers). There were some of us who thought the same as you… however I was fortunate to pick up a few large clients who pointed out they wanted service more than anything. We reset our pricing and concentrated on delivering on or before time with the appropriate quality – and after about three years had built up a base of very loyal clients. We are now down to 14 sign shops and a larger population – the price cutters come and go..we are still here.
Over the past ten years those clients have all become good friends and as their businesses have grown, our capacity to meet their needs now means we are unable to take on a new client unless we kick another out (and that is very rare). I have grown to four full timers, two part timers and two chaps who will come in when we are really in the cart. One of those two has started his own signwriting business and my advice to him was to target one or two large (meaning have a good amount of repeat sign writing done regularly) clients a month – He has been going nearly 12 months now and steadily building a good client base…. which means he is now less available to help us when we really need him!!!
The bottom line is if you dont have repeat business – then you really dont have a business – like all good things in life … it doesn’t happen over night, but if you persevere (and be selective over who YOU pick do do work for) …it WILL happen.

Like Shane, we do the odd give away/ freebie… but it is always something that we know will be meaningful and appreciated by the client (eg cut and apply a set of numbers to his new motocross bike – I know that someone who spends $20K or more a year with me deserves thirty minutes of my time to do a small job like that and I get the opportunity to have a beer or coffee with him and chew the fat…further cementing the fact that we are the sign shop for him – and he knows that when we want something that he supplies, we won’t be shopping around…we’ll be ringing him).

Maybe its like that because here in Nelson we are small… but talking to mates in Auckland and Wellington, its the same for them… and it works for Shane in Aus too. Good luck and give it a go – I’d rather be doing less work that is more rewarding for better money than chasing my tail all the time.

Just a thought, Alex – have you checked that the eps file you imported wasn’t a duplicated item to begin with (ungroup and click on one item and delete…if it is still there you’ve got hidden layers/duplicates) – we regularly get these from graphic designers creating wizzy files with lots of layers and rather than bring an old layer (say the text) forward when its been covered by a later layer, they toss another layer of text on top…so the original is still there…but you wouldn’t see it , even in wireframe. (?)

Hi Jason – we sometimes get that using corel x3 too…. seems to be the order of the layers in the file – anything you don’t want affected must be brought forward of the effect/transparency layer.

The BMW we posted yesterday had that problem – we used the shadow tool to create a shadow on the ‘735.com’ which put an ‘invisible’ rectangular raster layer into the file…we remembered to bring the lady to the front on the RHS but forgot on the LHS 👿 – when we printed the LHS the lovely lady was tanned only above the invisible line created by the shadow layer (<( …so back into corel, correct it, re-save as pdf and print again 😳

If this is the answer, let us know, because we don’t use Illustrator that much, but get a lot of illustrator files from graphic designers, some of which have the same problem…they don’t ever see it until we (:) ring them to find out whats wrong with the file

I don’t know if it was the difference in climates but it was worth trying it at the price.

    Hi Martin and Bill

I changed over to Jetbest for that very reason – it irks me that I can print at $20 a 440ml cartridge when prices vary here between $167 and $220 per 440ml Cart.. I took the opportunity to change the c/k head, pump and put 4 new LARGE dampers – all costing $680 – done here at local prices would have been more like $2000.

We did some testing on Sunday, tweaked a couple of profiles and this week have wacked out about 15 metres. No problem with vectorised files but have found that the magenta is slighty red and on raster work we have had to max down the magenta adjustment to get close to how the files out putted under the old ink. Scratch test is inconclusive as it is winter here and has been cold and damp all week. I may have to get a new profile to address this properly…but and $32 per litre, I’d be mad not to give it a go.

I have had to put the heater and dryer temperatures up to 46 deg each which is up 10 on what we needed for the Red Giant inks.

    Hi Ian

Versaworks has one embedded in it from Roland – it is superb and unlike the corel ones (and some others) when you pick a colour – thats the colour it prints…not two or ten shades to the left or right. I wll start a thread in the next day or so explaining how to print it and how to transfer the CPL file into Corel from versaworks and then open it as a palette for everyday use. We have a few sets printed for particular profiles and media combos, but for 90% of what we do, we just use the one we printed out for our main profile in medium (720×720) mode. We printed each page A4 size and stuck them on corflute so we can keep them in a box and take them out onto job sites when colour matching is needed.
