  • Hi Simon

    Thanks for that.

So I’ve have always thought that the top of the front and rear arches were a straight line, your graphics confirm that.

    quote Kevin Mahoney:

I would have printed those side panels on clear poly all day long. Both sides would go into under 3 metres of 1370mm material, no weeding, no taping, less chance of being blown off with an over zealous jet washer, or picked at by boneheads, zero time to fit, only plotter job would be the doors. Personal preference I guess

Knifeless tape or have you made a template?

I would be more concerned that no one could read the contact details with big white blocks covering them. Although I can still make out the number but you really made me work for it [emoji16]

I’m with everyone else here, print the graphics and use the plotter to cut around the parts, no issues with the white not matching. I do like Kev’s idea with doing it in clear, I might try that.

    I had something similar once.

I left my washing on the line in the boiling sun once for a couple of days and it did something like this, not the same pattern but seeing as the black tops look brown, I would put money on it being sun related.

I never left the clothes on the line again once they were dry, I learnt my lesson as some of the tops were expensive.

I would like to get to the bottom of it so I would buy another top, wear it and wash it and see what happens.

I’m currently at the same stage, I’ve not had a website in a long time but recently started working on a new one.

The thing for me is because I can do this kind of work and better than a lot of dedicated web designers I’ve seen but because I’m putting my name to it, I want it to be 100% perfect and I want that wow factor.

I’ve decided to do away with WordPress etc at the moment and build a straight html page. Customers don’t need to mess about with their website and they could ending screwing everything up in terms of SEO etc.

Fortunately for me, I know how to code and unlike many other that use a program or template so I can do pretty much do anything although I’m more than likely slower than someone who does this full time as I have to keep looking up stuff I’ve forgotten.

    I’m lost.

So I understand go with the two part system but what brand / model number?

I understand the floorshark is only a 1 part so avoid that.

I’ve seen a few that have been out down and they vinyl looks terrible, Asda have some fitted recently that still look good and vibrant.

On another note and sorry to hijack this thread, is anyone doing labels for covid-19?

I’ve had an email passed to me form a client that a printer sent them about doing labels, I just don’t see what people will need the labels for in regards to covid 19?

    Just finished with Worldpay.

I decided to go with the PAYG, paid over £200 for the machine and then paid fees on my usage.

I personally wouldn’t recommend them, they first off started charging me a monthly fee for something they signed me up to, when I challenged this after a year (took me that long to realise) i finally got a refund but I had to push for it.

I then got charges for not being PCI Compliant, it’s only a form you have to fill out but they give you so many passwords and logins that I kept forgetting what was what. You get billed £11.99 a month and I would end up getting 3 bills before I got it done, pretty much when I do the vat return.

Cheeky sods have it their T&C’s that you have to hand the terminal back even after I paid for it.

I now don’t bother and use stripe, they just use the computer to do it instead.

  • Thans Hugh

    I get it now.

In regards to your depth of 80mm, is that the standard size?

I’ve also attached an image of the shop, I’ve got a couple of questions regarding fitting.

How would you fit a tray to this? Bearing in mind it’s split into sections and the brick wall above would make it difficult to drill / screw anything

I’m thinking of making the tray myself out of composite with stand off lettering or would you just buy it in?

I don’t really tend to do this kind of job and I’ve always bought in, but I have to learn at some point surly.

Steeltrack? Is that a keencut thing?

So an update on how I got on.

Bought a new 9mm knife which improved it straight away even using my old technique.

However, I now cut on the other side and only do 3 light scores which is enough to snap off.

Thanks everyone for your help and that 25mm knife can go in the bin.

I think I have every deburring tool mention here, the edge racer is the best in my opinion but only if you have a flat edge to begin with.

I also found the double edge deburring tool got caught and ended up making a mess.

I’ve been using the biggest knife possible here diy.com

Ok, so to make sure I have this right.

Cut the board on the backside before applying the print and deburr, 3-4 strokes should do.

    What knife are you using?

    Hi David

That would be installed, I’m not qualified to do electrics so I would need to get someone in to do that part.

They were just rough figures I plucked out of the air but I thought it gave me a big enough scope to get their commitment on a certain sign,I just wasn’t sure whether it was accurate enough.

Would you say that was ok to go the client with then?

    Is there such a thing?

The reason I ask is because I am fitting a large graphic to the rear 1/4 and back of a custom van.

To be fair the sides aren’t that bad but the back is a right ****.

I was thinking if it were a wrap, I would stretch the film to make it work, application tape however doesn’t allow me to stretch it to confirm to the curves.

If there isn’t then why not?

I was looking into this yesterday and found Hexis do an RTape Conformable Application Tape – I’m getting a roll to try on a couple of jobs with a similar finish. Comes in various roll sizes

    That’s what I use.

Basically the conform means that it will stay flat on the backing paper, it doesn’t mean it will confirm around shapes

I used this tape for a little while, although more expensive it was very easy to use.

I stopped using it as the edges of the tape frayed and the banners looked untidy.

I can’t remember who sold me this now but I needed up going back to the original way.

Just to note, I did not trim the tape in any way.

I did think about doing that but the masking tape is so thin it wouldn’t take much to go through it especially as it’s a soft rubber.

I agree with the idea but need something a bit thicker I think to be on the safe side.

Why did you go for a floor standing system rather than a wall system?

I have one I made up using Ikea legs and although it’s not the best i does stop them falling over, the issue I find is lifting the rolls over the 600mm legs and setting them down without the media unwinding or banging down. I think I also made it a bit too big that it can’t go anywhere so I ended up sticking it in a corner and putting rolls of stuff I don’t touch on it.

Come on Iain, that would be to easy.

I’ve done the layout of my office multiple times and I finally got to the point where I got everything in and comfortable.

To be fair, the cutter is next to my desk, I just don’t want the wire going across another computer. I’ve just bought some USB wall sockets (not the charging ones you get on normal plugs) so that I can plug the cable in from my computer end, the extension would then be in the wall and to another wall plug, finally from that plug to the cutter. I’ve done this for the other USB printer and the same kind of plugs for the ethernet connections meaning no wires anywhere. Just hope it works

    Thank you.

  • quote NeilRoss:

It may be overkill but, depending on the thickness of the wood you could use locators and counter bore the holes large enough to sink the locator cup into the wood – leaving it just proud of the surface. Seal the holes with paint before fitting the locator cups. The result should look like surface fixing.

Great suggestion, how would this work on an old building, not sure it’s listed but it is in an old town?

Thanks Neil, I thought this but the vinyl lettering I put on seems to be ok.

  • OK, let me know if it becomes available again and I’ll come over.

  • Oh no… Jamie have you still got that table? I can’t contact you but I’m interested if you have, can collect anytime

  • Hi Neil

I did consider this but the client doesn’t want that look.

  • Oh and found the letter but it’s a bit scratched and beaten up

  • Hi guys

I couldn’t wait till Monday, went down there and checked it out for myself.

So there were no marks where the letter was which tells me that the tape has failed either because of the paint or because of the texture/uneven wood.

On this basis I tried to remove the other lettering, although it took a little persuasion, they came off with ease with just my hands. Once off other than a couple of patches where it ripped the paint off, where the tape bonded, there were no signs of the lettering which tells me that it’s the wrong tape for the surface.

I’ve offered to retouch the paintwork due to my error although my lettering should hide it and I’ll ask about the tape with the green backing.

Cherwell did not ask what surface the letters were being stuck to and when they got delivered I expected a foam tape but I just thought maybe I was wrong.

I think I’ll get the c re-cut, apply the foam tape and once I apply the mask for fitting, give it a little rubdown, clean then fit.

  • Thanks Kev

Told them I’ll sort it first thing and I’ll have a look on Monday morning to see if I can work out the issue.

That’s a good point about not making good enough contact, not sure of the make but it was a clear thin double sided tape with a red backing, maybe tesa.

  • Hi Kev

It was a painted wooden surface, painted with Dulux Weathershield.

It was painted a couple of weeks before and although it’s dry, it does kind of have a tacky feel to it although the vinyl and letters stuck to it ok or so i thought.

Wow, I use the charcoal metallic a lot and not had one issue with that and been using that for ever but mainly on smaller items.

I used cover styl’ in gloss black, lovely stuff to work with but scratched very very easily.

I tried applying it 2 ways, first with a squeegee and a buffer, the second time using a laminator and all it took was something like rubbing it with your thumb to leave marks and you catch it in the light and it looked awful.

I ended up going over it again with a carbon material.

I used gloss white a few weeks back and looks perfect.
