Card machines and their fees, what do you use?

£15 rental, a new £4 charge for PCI compliance, then the fee’s for processing, then additional fee’s for card holder not present, then authorisation fees…. oh and a terminal we need to restart before each transaction.
I’m more annoyed that I renewed on to ‘better’ rates only to later learn of the likes of Square & Sumup. :bangshead:
We’ll they can get stuffed.
Ordered a sum up 3g terminal for £99, which will be replacing the heap of junk from our current provider. Our current provider wont get a penny more than what I am obliged to pay.

Hi David
I received my sumup few days ago. Need to set up when I get some free time.
Particularly interested in the virtual terminal / client not present.

Why not just go with PayPal?
Paypal Here is about £30You can get payment by Paypal, all major credit cards and mobile.
No monthly fees
invoicing from the account
allow part payments of the invoice directly from the invoice etc
take payments automatically via your website, social media and more.
lots of reason.pay slightly more in transaction costs, just add it to the bill or swallow the costs with the fact there’s no monthly payments and a ton of features in the software, app etc.

There’s cheaper terminals/readers, but they all need an app… bit complicated for my dad.
£99, no ongoing fed’s I’ll be glad to see the back of the monthly rental.
We have sumup for the physical machine, and square for virtual terminal 2.5%, it sounds high but if you’re not paying £20+ a month rental quids in. :thumbsup:

We use stripe. It’s online. Get our money in 3 days. No up front costs.
Do somewhere around 6k a month in card payments and cost about £22 a month give or take. Can link in with a website and not had any brand of card rejected yet. And if we don’t use it we don’t pay a penny. -
I’m currently with Retail merch Services and processing is through elavon, however, I’m also sick of £80+ vat a qtr rental and bills as much as £80 a month – though the later is obvs goos as we’re putting a fair bit through, our avge debit credit card fee is 0.5% but i found some commercial / business cards were as much as 4.5% recently, have had a massive row with them about all the compliance / non compliance crap too, sick of it.
However, Global pay, or is it worldpay with HSBC? have offered much lower rates and a free rental the teminal..
I bought the paypal here terminal about 4 yrs ago when they first came out for about £99, within a month they reduced them to £49!! The damned thing has never held a charge for more than two days which renders it little more than useless when you do actually need to use it. can’t do "cardholder not present" transactions either…

I’ve been stuck in a rolling contract for 10 years with my provider, tried to cancel multiple times only to be told I’ve just missed the deadline & had rolled over into a new 2 year contract. They offered me the option to buy myself out for the princely sum of £1000[emoji23].
The terminal stopped working a week ago, they are unable to fix it so happy days, contract is void. I Now need another card option so following this thread with great interest -
Once our new sum up terminal arrives, I’ll be disconnecting our worldpay terminal and sticking it in a box. Reminder is set in my calendar to cancel the contract.
Like Hugh we get rinsed on commercial cards, and then there’s an additional fee if we take it over the phone.
Some of the terminals link to your phone, so provided you’ve got wifi on your phone, it should work a treat. Emails or texts the receipt to the customer. :thumbsup:

Another bonus I’ve found with SumUp is they payment is in our bank the next working day :thumbsup:

I have SumUp and it’s great some months nearly all transactions are done with it and sometimes it might not get used so no charge.
2.25% charge on the transaction but better than a rubber cheque. -

David Hammond, after you commented that Sumup may not do Card Not Present (CNP), I checked with Sum up and they replied just now by email and a link. Seems Sumup does do CNP payments but at a different rate and you have to jump through a few more hoops, which is a relief for me. Anyway, see the link for more details. Just finished with Worldpay.
I decided to go with the PAYG, paid over £200 for the machine and then paid fees on my usage.
I personally wouldn’t recommend them, they first off started charging me a monthly fee for something they signed me up to, when I challenged this after a year (took me that long to realise) i finally got a refund but I had to push for it.
I then got charges for not being PCI Compliant, it’s only a form you have to fill out but they give you so many passwords and logins that I kept forgetting what was what. You get billed £11.99 a month and I would end up getting 3 bills before I got it done, pretty much when I do the vat return.
Cheeky sods have it their T&C’s that you have to hand the terminal back even after I paid for it.
I now don’t bother and use stripe, they just use the computer to do it instead.

I’ve unplugged the WP terminal, and will be cancelling my DD, robbing bar stewards.
Like you, they soon start adding new charges, 20p for each authorisation, £4.99 a month for this, bla bla bla.
Looked at SumUp CNP fee’s, cheaper to use square 😉

I use stripe as I can link it on my invoices. Auto adds the card fee for the customer to pay but otherwise free. There’s an app called charge that links with stripe and you can take card payments in person but you need to add your own fees if you want to

I thought it was now illegal to pass card charges on to the customer? Hence why ebay doesn’t allow people to charge extra when using paypal etc. etc.

Didn’t know that. I set stripe up through my account software and it does it all automatically. It is mentioned in my t’s&c’s. i best get my accountant have a look at this

From HMRC:
Businesses that accept card payments can no longer pass the charge for processing transactions on to their customers and will have to find ways to cover the cost.
The ban does not apply to payments made with corporate credit or debit cards, but merchants who take payments from these sorts of cards (typically B2B businesses), cannot charge fees higher than the costs they have incurred for processing payments.I only B2B so that’s all good

Recently had a new supplier charge extra fees to us as B2B. They had the goods I needed, and delivered well, but it did leave a slightly nasty taste, when the total then had an additional fee at checkout.

TBH I only use it as a last resort. Prefer Transfer any day. Generally see the fees and BACS over. I have a bad payer who always pay on Credit Cards when they don’t have funds so works for me

It was my first purchase from a new supplier! But, TBF, I’d rather not loose the merchant fees and be paid by transfer. Thanks for the reality check.

Funnily enough, I looked it up after I posted! You are correct in that it’s only B2B. I guess on small orders it’s fine but when we can be charged anything up to 4 or 5% for some corporate / business card transactions it could be a big chunk – especially as bigger jobs have generally been adjusted in the customers favour in the first place!

Finally managed to cancel my 9 year contract with Transax so I’m now fully available to sign my life away on a new terminal provider. Sum up seems to be getting good feedback at the minute, am I right in thinking that there’s no monthly fee & a fixed percentage of card payment on all accepted cards?

Its only Corporate cards, not all B2B transactions…. Corporate C&D cards are a specific type of card (for those who do not know). For example, my business debit card is not a corporate debit card.

Yes SumUp do, but their fee’s are higher than Square, and square offer it from the off, no need for jumping through hoop. :thumbsup:
If you sign up, you can use your own link to refer friends, and get the incentives for referring yourself 😉

Bugger… just seen your thing about referrals and incentives!!
We bought one a week or so back, now… a question.. accounting…
With our old system we paid a monthly fee to Elavon and a quarterly rental to RMS, billed separately and easy to account. With Sum Up they take the amount at source so you always get a different amount hitting the bank to what was invoiced, making reconciliation wrong…
How do people account for this? My wife (and amazing bookkeeper) said "just add the % to the bill, after a moments thought I pointed out we’d still have the same issue when they deduct at source and a different amount hits the bank!
Thoughts or solutions please???!

Set up a seperate bank account in your software.
Pay the full invoice amount into the ‘sum up’ account, then transfer what you actually get into your bank account.
You can download a fee invoice from sumup, and pay that from your sum up bank account, to zero the account.
