  • Vinyl roll holders, what do you use?

What is everyone doing to keep their print rolls in order?

I thought about keeping them in boxes and storing under the table but a full role of 1520mm x 50m and the banner material is even worse.

I need something that can support the weight of multille roles, easy to use and nothing that’s gonna stop me just standing them up against a wall.

I’ve built a rack filling the instruction on here in the past but I always felt the bars I used wasn’t strong enough. Mdp do a holder but I don’t trust it on the wall and the don’t seem to do a floor to ceiling one.

Signgeer does an armour one but I wanted to see what everyone else does.

We got some 2inch box section, made a base, then welded some 12in uprights, and just stand it on them. No more rolls falling over.

You may find it cheaper to get a local fabricators to make one than buying an off the shelf job.

    Thanks David

Why did you go for a floor standing system rather than a wall system?

I have one I made up using Ikea legs and although it’s not the best i does stop them falling over, the issue I find is lifting the rolls over the 600mm legs and setting them down without the media unwinding or banging down. I think I also made it a bit too big that it can’t go anywhere so I ended up sticking it in a corner and putting rolls of stuff I don’t touch on it.

Mainly wall space wasn’t available, and secondly weight.

600mm is a long way to lift a roll up and over. Ours are 12inch max. Ours we can grip the top of the roll, and lift up over the peg.

I’ll see if I’ve any photo’s of it from when we made it.

As for wall mounted racks, we use a twin slot shelving system, but use bookends, which are like a wire look that fits into the twinslot, and some plastic tube to go through the core, but we’re no where near the weight of a full roll of digital.

    Hi David

Yeah some pictures would be helpful.

Just moved into a new unit and although I will post images soon, I want to get a bit more organised with stuff and some kind of rack whether floor or wall standing will help.

We made all ours, I’d do it slightly differently by having less space between holders to get more per rack, o it the digital is bought in full rolls so no need for so many big spaces!

How do you find the battens holding up with a new roll of banner material say 1600mm wide?

    quote Daniel Evans:

Where the rolls are exceptionally heavy (I go to 50m x 1370 wide in digital) I use hand rail, quite dear but it’s rare you’ll have more than a few full rolls at any one time.

make 100% sure the wood is try before using, the batten wasn’t and it ruined a few rolls and cores when they sucked up the moisture and distorted under their own weight!

I’ve had full 25m wrap films on the batten too, that’s fine. I basically have the large racks on wheels – double sided, and can store around 18 rolls, though as I say, for the cad and wrap this could be increased. The 610 is on the wall racks.

    Here’s our twinslot system.

Cheaper, quicker and easier, can get two part rolls on each row.

    Thanks all.

Something to think about I think.

What one do I like best / works more within my budget.

oh, I forgot to mention, that the battons used do hold a full roll of banner material. make sure you use one without knots in and you turn them wider side vertical for added strength. you can get the broom handles in bundles from eBay for not too much.

We’ve also got the DIY timber versions of the racks for digital media rolls, 3 racks with each one capable of holding 22 rolls each.
We used 50x50mm timber to hold the rolls , never had any problems with the weight of the rolls, we also rounded off the timber with a router.

For laminate rolls we needed them nearer to the work benches and had the attached made up in 5mm steel.
got it powder coated also, we used stainless steel poles on this and had an end cap fitted to stop them sliding off.
The front pole also allows us to pull the laminate over it to a required length for shorter jobs and cut cleanly along the bar.

I like that, where did you buy the steel poles and what thickness / diameter are they?

Hi Daniel, We got the poles from a local engineering company. they are 30mm diameter, end cap was 50mm.
I should have a drawing of the whole thing on file here, I’ll post it later if I find it.

Daniel, have a look at the attached.

we’ve kept it this way to allow cutting on the front bar as I mentioned before. This one only holds 3 rolls (shown in green) you’d need to increase the width to allow a roll on the front slot also.
You can add them and go from floor to ceiling also, and as they are bolted to the wall separate you can adjust the width to suit your needs

    hope this helps
