We’re already looking at another machine, as this lockdown period has identified supply issues associated with using outsourcing.

MemberMay 21, 2020 at 7:46 pm in reply to: Mimaki CJV, Direct to foam board, thoughts please?cjv300 is a solvent machine, using heat to dry the ink – inks unlikely to dry on the foamboard due to the extra thickness of the material, or if you did crank the heat up it would warp the board I would imagine – thats even if you can adjust the head height clearance accurately as Gil says.
Direct to board printers tend to be UV to eliminate the drying issue (and yes, there are a few Hybrid machines)

It will be HS3921****** for plastics, last 6 number depend on the material / thickness etc
39 – Plastics / 21 – otherplates, sheets, film, foil and strip, of plastic
Educated guess: HS3921131010 for 3mm polyurethane foam sheet when referring to trade tariff: https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/headings/3921

quote :One thing which has always puzzled me though, Slip ratings are required for the graphics, but the floors they are being applied to don’t – go figure
Umm.. that not quite true in retail & commercial properties, HSE states:
The floor in a workplace must be suitable for the type of work activity taking place on it.
The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 (Regulation 12) require floors to be suitable, in good condition and free from obstructions. People should be able to move around safely.
Where a floor is likely to be subject to frequent contamination, people should still be able to walk on it without the risk of slipping. See Assessing the slip resistance of flooring, which also describes the relevant British and European standards.
Eg: if a customer slips over in a shop, and the flooring isn’t suitable (no slip rating) then the owners will be liable.
-
Simply, if you want them to last then use the laminate version.
In commercial / high traffic areas the textured version will not last long, I’ve had reports of 2 weeks from a client whom bought them ‘cheap’ form Ebay to save a few Quid… and now ordering the 2 part version from us. -
Do you have an Antalis account? if not prices will look very high as they are for Joe Public, not trade.

MemberApril 6, 2020 at 4:33 pm in reply to: Upgrading from a Graphtec CE 6000 60cm to a Summa D120RLVery simple to do – in illustrator create & save a library spot colour, with a name such as ‘ContourCut’, this will be your cut path.
In Onyx – CUT server – managed cutters – add your new Summa – then in ‘cut layer option’ add the name of your newly created spot colour (CountourCut). Onyx will now know this is not to be printed, and your cut path, which will auto generate every time you print the job.
So basically the same as Mutoh! For vinyl cutting, Summa comes with a control program that will load & cut your .ai files.
Hope that helps :smiles:

MemberMarch 14, 2020 at 10:54 am in reply to: Illegal Signs erected at a new Hospital and Airport, whats your thoughts?quote :The thing is Colin, every industry has regulations of some sort. it just seems the sign industry is so far behind in putting any in place. which is something I spend a hell of a lot of time to create an awareness of.I totally agree, I have pulled companies up before, as in my example of fitting tray sign over windows, we lost the work as customer didn’t want to be educated, just wanted the job done. Imagine if there was a fire, and covering windows with ACM on the first floor hindered the Fire Brigade……
Another example on our label press printing beer labels. Supplied artwork was missing legal requirements in displaying ABV at correct font size, on the front of the label. This could land the end user a £5000 fine – NOT the designer / printer. We pointed this out to the designer, who’s reply was ‘But it ruins the design….’ ( ) The customer on the other hand was very happy!
So yes, its about education. As for regulation I’d personally like to see Building Control become more involved in signing off signage, therefore encouraging & promoting the knowledge required – As with your H&S signage, Building Control would indicate the colours required, and if still incorrect would advice and not sign off the work, long before any audit.
If this type of system was introduced, I personally feel it would create a level playing field, as no matter if you worked from a shed or had a 2000 strong work force, we’d all have to abide by the same compliance rules – fairer solution? -
Phil – your missing a trick..

Heads are warrantied by HP for 2k or X amount of time – only returned 2 heads in 5 years.
On average I’d say heads run 6-7k with no issues (and we run small / fine detailed stuff, so are fussy), but can defo’ run longer!
quote :Spoke to a local guy who has latex and he also said every few rollsekks, that doesn’t sound right – for example in December we ran 10 rolls @ 1370mmm x 50m rolls one after the other printing hi tack safety stickers without a single head change, pictures below are those heads, still in machine… run 12Litres & 10litres

quote :hy on earth at even 1100mm high, doesn’t this come out of a machine perfectly flat?
When printing the lower the micron ‘step’ between layers the smoother finish. Small desk top machines can be as low as 25microns, there is also some post print smoothing on some higher enmd machines.
But can you imagine the time it would take to print 4metres high in 25micron layers…….

MemberMarch 5, 2020 at 2:05 pm in reply to: Illegal Signs erected at a new Hospital and Airport, whats your thoughts?Rob, the problem is, that sign making is pretty much unregulated.
Regulation can be a double edge sword, Cost(s) to ourselves that a regulatory body would charge VS increased standards etc.
While I like to see, and strive ourselves to meet high standards in both sign making and graphic design, and making sure insurance & fit for purpose is adhered too… would I like to see a regulatory charge of £1000 for the first year, then £500 a year onwards as electrical trade? I’m not sure….
We have lost a job last year, as was unhappy with clients response about planning permission and building control (they wanted to cover windows with sign trays on a first floor), yet A.N OTHER sign maker was happy to take the work.

MemberFebruary 18, 2020 at 11:00 am in reply to: L26500 print quality on banner and wallpaper…Certain ‘cheaper’ banner media isn’t coated properly for Latex usage… even if they say they are! – yes it will work, but its not really suitable!
We had this before, and was purely down to the surface coating after a lot of excuses from an old supplier and some insider info from HP.For banner look at PaperGraphics FB6 range for Latex machines, great short term banner media that takes perfect solid colours.
Metamark Wallart, hmm not had an issue with darks, but we do create our own profiles.
One last thing, is check printheads. Some of these medias will make ‘wavy’ patterns if any of the heads are not 100%, quick plot test will show if any heads misfiring.
Edit: Your last picture is what we had with low cost banner media – it isn’t coated correctly for Latex use.

MemberJanuary 8, 2020 at 5:58 pm in reply to: Digital Signage Solutions, views and opinions please? We’ve sold a few – not cheap looking at £1500 – £4000 outlay for a 50" free standing unit depending on what you want to do. Top end units are connected via Wi-Fi or even SIM card so you can change or update adverts without visiting site, plus get status reports, this is a great upsale service that you can provide for ongoing revenue. Smaller presentation screens are a lot less!!
And no, domestic ‘smart’ TV’s are not suitable, as they are not rated to run 24/7….. yes I’ve had a customer ask this before.
Artwork is pretty easy for basics flat images just a standard Jpeg etc, you can then progress to simply photoshop timeline (GIF, AVI), and if you really get into it create using something like Adobe premier pro & After Effects for the really coooool video stuff (MP4 etc) (tip: you can buy a huge amount of premade files now from the likes of shutterstock etc), all the units have some form of Android media player software running making it very easy to add files to the internal harddrive, with control on how it plays back. On power loss, they just reboot and play.

I think its down to they’re having trouble getting the stock to resale.
I notice HP parts are bought from USA, not from HP Europe (Which is based in Spain) – this would also explain why they don’t want returns, as they would be unable themselves to return items, and the long lead times.
Manufactures tend to have distribution partners, and don’t like 3rd part sellers at times…..

As will all 3rd party inks – is it worth it?
With HP L3** having replaceable printheads, using 3rd party ink will render warranty invalid on new printheads (the onboard OS logs and notifies HP). Yes, in the 4 years we have run this series we’ve only had 4 or 5 heads die within warranty period, and claimed for replacements – but at £70 per head, that eats into any saving using 3rd party inks.
This is only one item, as Rob says its highly likely your HP warranty will be void any if they find you using 3rd party ink.For us, with experience in the past with 3rd party inks and there providers wiggling out of any warranty’s/guarantees that they provide, we steer clear of them, to save a few ££, its not worth it – argue with your ink supplier instead and get the OEM ink price down (should be able to get OEM 831 inks below £85 currently) 😉

I know they’re a lot more difficult to get on HP suppliers channels and therefore the prices are higher, liable to increase at a faster rate then the newer L** series (831 ink) too, as HP wish to push end users to the newer machines :awkward:

We use Adobe Illustrator / Photoshop / Indesign so have slightly higher spec kit in regards to RAM and dedicated graphics cards, as hardware acceleration is supported by Adobe.

Motherboard has ‘onboard’ graphics I quickly checked Flexi, and it doesn’t state if it benefits from a separate GPU, so unsure if it would offer any extra benefits.
Flexi write up says 4GB ram min, 16GB recommended, so this machine with 8GB is above min spec, if you wanted you could up the RAM to 16GB for top speeeeeeeeeed.I like Novatech, buy a few bits from them, good pricing and good service compared to the likes of Dell / Currys etc!
They will always build a machine to you requirements too.
