I have, in the past, switched inks on my solvent printers and never had any issues with the inks or my source.

Latex, well even if you find a great source of latex ink, you still void the warranty and may have profile shortages.
I know there will be some generic profiles which will work, but never truly work to the full potential.
With the latex heads being an easy change consumable, you will also void any warranty on those also.
just some things to keep in mind.

If your looking to go down this route I would suggest using the company in the Netherlands that supply them, they used to make their own inks but found the problems too much so they now use ink from the 5 series (I think) that comes in large boxes and break it down to the smaller 750ml cartridges for the 3 series this way you get genuine hp ink and still get fairly good prices.

Personally I don’t use enough ink to make it worthwhile but if I was going to do it again this would be the route I went down instead of the risks in non genuine. Prices I was offered on a full set was as good as any other reseller of their own inks.

As will all 3rd party inks – is it worth it?

With HP L3** having replaceable printheads, using 3rd party ink will render warranty invalid on new printheads (the onboard OS logs and notifies HP). Yes, in the 4 years we have run this series we’ve only had 4 or 5 heads die within warranty period, and claimed for replacements – but at £70 per head, that eats into any saving using 3rd party inks.
This is only one item, as Rob says its highly likely your HP warranty will be void any if they find you using 3rd party ink.

For us, with experience in the past with 3rd party inks and there providers wiggling out of any warranty’s/guarantees that they provide, we steer clear of them, to save a few ££, its not worth it – argue with your ink supplier instead and get the OEM ink price down (should be able to get OEM 831 inks below £85 currently) 😉
