Heads Up – Domain Name Scam Call
Received a call today from 01229 314719.
The claimed to be calling "existing customers", and wish to speak to the person who registers the domain name we have.
The being me, I amused them for a while.
They were calling some company (can’t remember the name), about domain registered with xxx company since xxx date, (all publicly available), but could be quite convincing if you didn’t know.
After questioning the fact that we’re not an existing customer, as we don’t pay them anything, and being reassured that we were ‘indirectly’ customers of theirs because they’re registered with Nominet, an establishing that we weren’t a customer at all, and it was a blatant lie, I invited the chap to continue his sales pitch.
Trying to sell domains, at inflated prices… £300+ for a domain that is available for £7.99.

That’s nothing – I get automated calls two or three times a day from my "internet service provider" warning me that my internet connection is about to be terminated. Thought I better let you lot know now while I still have internet access :awkward:

I have had 2 calls now trying to offer me domain names, apparently from my provider….which it wasn’t! They are trying anything to get a sale

Its not so bigger scam these days but actually knew a guy (more a knob) that made money out of that, they would bulk register domain names for pennines then contact the companies saying we have intercepted a purchase for yourdomain.net and that they could purchase it before it was allowed to be purchased by the new company wanting the name. Because people are desperate thinking oh someones after my name ill grab everyone available for a inflated price and get mobbed off in the process.
Horrible people playing on successful businesses insecurity.

I’ve had several of these calls, again it was a competitor in Brighton retiring – I searched the domain names in my 1&1 account t while they waffled and could’ve bought the .co.uk & .com on all for about £15 a year, I nearly bought one of them!

well, two of them actually, trying to sell me my own uksigngroup.com domain for £10,000+ :rollseyes: 😆 😆 😆
old news now, but true story.anyway, if anyone wants it, they have parked the domain at the following link and has dropped in price over the years. 😆

Click HereThat’s outrageous Rob. It’s about time new laws were brought in to protect us from these opportunists. I’ve been offered .com versions of my own companies domain name at outrageous prices and have stuck 2 fingers up at them. They’re no use to anyone else so why bother? All you need to do is apply a slight adaption to the name anyway. That aside, I think domain names have had there day, it’s all about social media these days..

I was offered dragonsigns.com (I have the .co.uk, .eu etc anyway, but I wasn’t going to pay $5k for it, I offered $1000 and heard no more, I see now that my namesake in Cardiff has it!
No biggy though, I get a lot of calls for them so guess I rank higher anyway! -
I’ve often wondered if B&Q are affected by this as they use DIY.COM instead of B&Q, it used to be called cybersquatting.

I sold a domain for £1800, around eight years ago.
cost me about £22
thing is, I genuinely bought the domain for business purposes and had it about 5 years.
the person contacted me after obtaining my details via the registrar and offered me £500.
I wasn’t interested in selling it, so declined. they came back offering more. again declined… after much back and forth I agreed on £1800 or thereabout. the money was paid within 24 hours. I was pleased as I had never got round to using the domain. then I received a remittance note by post… at this point, I was a tad gutted. the customer was French Aerospace so I’m sure would have paid much more had i held out longer. 😆 anyway, i was still happy enough. -

Had this call too, apparently valued customer (not) and a deal offer just for us (not) took them up on the offer, however whilst they were messing about during the call I bought the domain through 123-reg for £8. Funny they didn’t ring back for me to pay them! At least if you going to sell a domain for shed loads more than it’s worth buy it first!
