we run a picture framing business, wife’s department.
The picture framing was the main part when we started but over time signage followed by Dye Sub have moved in to 1 & 2 followed by picture framing.

Like any country Australia will in the main part be what you make it. The weather is a whole lot different to the UK and yes we do talk kinda funny. Here we plan to do everything outside and our second plan would be to come inside. the economy is suffering just like everywhere else but in the whole unemployment in low 30c high 20c is much more pleasant than freezing cold. I would try to get a job just to learn the differences in Prices and materials that exist here compared to your home. From reading the boards vinyl acts slightly different in our heat compared to your average days, wouldn’t take long to get used to but it just adds to the learning curve.
Finally we play England soon in the cricket so you will have to get used to being called ‘a bl**dy pom’ Mostly said with love but you will soon know when it’s nasty. I have lived here most of my life and think it is about the best place on earth, but admit I am probably slightly biased. I would also start in employment so you can have a good look around Australia before deciding finally on where to settle,we are a very large land mass and each area is vastly different from the tropics down to Tasmania which is similar to the UK in weather Sorry to ramble.
    cheers Mike 😀

Not sure if I can add this but it is the web address for one of our sign magazines that has a on line version with employment section:-

Well it seems that woolies Australia were not connected to any other woolies when it was founded
    http://www.dse.com.au/isroot/dse%5Csupport/woo … istory.pdf
gives a 47 page outline on woolies history in Australia. I don’t doubt that today they all have shares in each. Now I don’t know what to believe like all history I guess it depends on the outlook of the original reviewer.

no Woolies in Australia aren’t related to Uk or USA Unless things have changed in the last 20 years I used to be a woolies Manager in Australia. woolies started here in Sydney as a single store with flat bed counters G J Coles started about the same time also with flatbed counters in Sydney the 2 companies went at it hammer and tongue even to this day usuallt the 2 stores were only 1 or 2 doors apart, Untill recently Coles were number 2 over here, then we brought in an American Chief Excutive. Coles have lost massive market share and had to sell Myer which they had bought a few years earlier Myer is probably our number 1 department store set-up cheers Mike
Things do seem to be all doom & Gloom at the moment world wide. what worries me is the brains that are trying to fix it are the same brains that got us into it in the first place.
To fight inflation our reserve bank increased interest rates several times then the economy stalled so we are having huge rate cuts but we still have high inflation. their excuse is Oh! we didn’t see that coming. Well I for one thought thats what they got the big bucks for.

Woolworths is the biggest retailer in Australia no relation to the UK woolies. ours has about 50% of the groceries market plus discount stores, electrical outlets, clothing stores, fuel outlets and financial outlets.
Sorry to be ignorant but what does UK woolies do or did.

Only had one question about thickness, but the client was installing on to a sign in 34 degrees centigrade, full sun, hot substrate when I say hot you could fry eggs on it. No wonder the vinyl was a bit stretchy.

the printer was seeing the border as process black and the main print as spot black I don’t know why because I had set them as spot black everywhere ( I thought) Somebody in USA pointed out a button called 123 button that list what foils it is going to use and if you don’t like it you can then bring up the one you don’t like and change it. Just had to print the bottom panel again and all went as I wanted.

October 1, 2008 at 8:04 am in reply to: What stretcher bars do i need for canvas?

Any Picture framing supplier should be able to supply the stretcher bar moulding They are usually about 3meters in length. Pine with a basic rectangular profile one corner is rounded and the top surface has a slight angle to keep the canvas of of the bar when stretched. Framers cut at 45 degrees then underpin at any size. when stretching with a hand stretcher the pivot point hooks under the inside bottom edge. so you shouldn’t have any problems. If I can help further just pm me ( my wife is a picture framer and has made many many stretcher frames including a 1800mm x 1200mm indigenous art piece.

As i said we have just bought a Gerber edge and sought Franks advice before buying ours came with a program security Key and Program to run said machine over here when they were originally sold, they were sold with omega software.
ours is only an Edge not an edge 2. I have been told the main difference is 300DPi verses 600 x 300 DPI. we looked for several years and this is only the second one to come on to the market that we saw.
Cost to us was $7000 Australian.
the machines are built like sherman tanks and are really good gear.

    Hi Martin
In MHO you should get the plotter side well and truly under your belt before adding a printer to your arsenal. As you say they can be expensive to run and clients tend to get a bit picky re colours all of which requires you to learn more skills. We did just cut vinyl for 4 years and only moved in to printing in the last few months firstly with a old Roland pc60 and only this week we bought a Gerber edge. you need to be sure what you are wanting to print and what purpose will your clients will be putting your finished product to. Do you need to go solvent, eco solvent or thermal and I am sure there are more options. I don’t personally know of any small solvent or eco solvent printers about 760mm wide is the smallest I know of, having said that ordinary inkjets can print to special coated product which is available. but we only used it once.
hope this is of some help

    Hi John
we are probably the least qualified to answer your question. our only claim to fame is we were in exactly the same position and went for the PC60. My advise to you would be save for the solvent print and cut. the quality we get from our PC60 is not as good as the later machines but that could be just us however the ribbons are not cheap and this makes your images a lot more expensive to produce there for Tyre kickers go else where. what worries me is that we may get a reputation for charging over the top prices. To try to avoid this we sell at very near our cost prices and still have trouble matching solvent prices. There is no doubt that once you have a printer, printing type work seems to arrive at your door. this may of course be a mind set on our behalf. in closing save for the later model.
    Cheers Mike 😀

    Hi Jame
If it is just 1 carrier and you only do small jobs you can still run CMYK and one spot colour. well I think you can.

Mark, we do lots of name stickers some with a simple logo. we just use cheap vinyl get the plotter to cut the background shape generally on white, then cut the name etc weed everything then proceed as normal. we started doing them when we relocated and business was slow. now we do them because we don’t want to let the customer down. they are a pain to do and we make very little on the jobs. but it all helps the bank account.

Alexis at least you have learned that life’s mistakes should always be in somebody Else’s life.
Stick with the name brands and buy the best that you can budget for. All the top brands have their followers We have a Summa and find it fantastic. But I think all the name brands are good otherwise they wouldn’t have a good name. Cheers Mike

The phone thing happened to my poor old Dad in a bank. I had gone with him because he couldn’t stand for long and was very feeble. Phone rang service stopped so I leant across and pressed the hang up buttons, you should have seen the look on the persons face. I said sorry we were here first they can wait. I will report you to senior management she said so I replied don’t bother give me their number & I will call them now. Dad just blinked at me but I think deep inside he was quite proud.

I thought you were a very pretty girl with a great personality. These other boys are just being naughty, something an Aussie would never do.

May 6, 2008 at 12:17 am in reply to: What Sublimation Setup?

HI we have been doing dye sub for several months as an add on to our sign & frame business. we haven’t promoted it much just mention that we can supply whatever with there signs and from time to time give a thank you mug with larger sign jobs. We are at the stage where dye sub brings in nearly as much as Frames. We bought a Epsom 1290 6 colour a3 printer 38cm x 38cm press, mug press bulk artarium inks. We have since added a small mighty press which is fantastic. we also invested in a laser temp gauge and found that our original press was 25 degrees Celsius out ( to High) once this was sorted our problems reduced dramatically. Press was Chinese. Like all things you get what you pay for. My wife wants to sell the framing & concentrate on shirts , mugs etc
    Cheers Mike
