• Working Hours

I see there is talk of an EU directive being imposed on British workers which means no one will be allowed to work on average more than 48 hours a week over a three month period. Britain is currently opted out of this directive but there is talk that it will be introduced.

So how many hours a week do you work? And how do you feel about being limited by law to working no more than 48 hours a week on average?

there has to be protection for some workers but its how they will enforce it that matters.

less hours worked = more workers Not with the NI rates etc. mr darling

Remember the film 1984? The worlds turning into one big dictatorship. 😕 Can you imagine running a sign business on a 48hr week? Yeah right. 😮

I go to the office on average 60 hours a week but when I get home I work on (thanks Blackberry!!). Tonight I left a night out early to come home and work after a late email.

As Lynn said, how can they police that?

BTW I polled 70+ because of my home working times.

    They can’t, and they won’t.

The regulation doesn’t apply to the self employed.

20% of the 48hour will be for checking UKSB, is that hourly deductible?

If you need to work 70 hours you may need staff. Not for Rob doing other things like the site and what not, but one business for over 70hrs a week? Your either earning lots of money to justify it or doing jobs for nothing. 40hour weeks here for everyone, overtime when needed but you need to have a life otherwise what is the point?

By the way I’m grumpy today as I slept funny last night and am in pain, the dog done a runner on the walk this morning, it’s freezing here, there was no milk when I arrived in work, my canvas print for my girlfriends Christmas printed crap… did I mention it’s freezing?

anyone can work 50+ hours a week, I have done it many times in the past.
Its not good and its not clever, unless you do It for a short period and gain the rewards.
if you are doing it on a regular basis, you do really need to assess your situation.
If you cant afford to delegate your responsibilities, you are not costing out your time properly, the common phrase is busy fools, but I wouldnt insult anybody by calling them that.

If after working for 60 hours you haven’t banked at least a grand, as self employed, you would be better off being an employee,

I appreciate your point Peter, but I feel that shouldnt apply to startup businesses.

    Paul I agree
but you still have to account for the time invested in any business, Your time is an asset, and as such it should not be sold short, if you spend 50 hours a week building your business, then you should expect a return for that time in the future.
As I said, I have worked long hours in the past, sometimes without any great benefit. We should work to live, but not live to work.

Each to there own, but I already don’t spend enough time with family and friends, the 40hours I work are generally full on and I can get pretty tired, I would not like to find out what I’m like after working 70 + hours, probably single with no friends due to severe grumpiness!
