• Making Mistakes

Posted by Andrew Boyle on December 18, 2008 at 10:21 pm

With the Christmas Holidays approaching I seem to be making more and more mistakes……….a whole catalogue of errors this week.

    What’s that all about 😀 😀

I went to deliver signs to the church two days ago. I’m talking to my mom on my cell phone, loading up various bits and bobs, making sure the "CLOSED" sign is turned over, locking the house, etc.
I’m about to pull out of my driveway when I had the distinct feeling I’d forgotten something (usually I get it two miles down the road)
I forgot to load the signs!

router cut letters the wrong size…wallpaper that doesn’t fit the wall….templates with the wrong version of the logo…..a hanging out box with a flat bracket when the fascia is sloping.

I’m either a guy trying to get finished and not being able to multi task or I am indeed getting old and doddery 😀 😀 😀

Thanks Jill for your empathy 😀 😀

I dont make mistakes, I never have, I’m perfect.
    I know I’m right.
I cant remember anyone ever saying that I was wrong, not since this morning anyway

Andrew at least I can blame mine on menopause!
    :lol1:
The Dr even said it’s so.
My 82 year old mom told me yesterday that I need to start making lists because I am so forgetful.
Today I forgot to put the ~ over the n in cabana, but that was an easy fix.
The church called me today, I was supposed to make them a small sign for the crying room but I forgot that too.
I didn’t make it because I forgot where I put the little sign blank that it goes onto.

    I feel your pain.

I drove 45 minutes south to sign a Bus recently. Nearly finished and I realised the phone numbers were still on my work bench 45 minutes away 🙂

No probs I said. I’ll be down next week to do a second bus, I’ll put it on then…. got down there last week, remembered the extra phone numbers… but forgot the logo for the rear door of the bus I was supposed to do…..

No probs I said, I’ve got a 3rd bus to do this week…. got down there…. remembered the logo… but forgot the web site on the bus I was supposed to do…

Going down next tuesday to do a 4th bus…. I’ll make sure everything is done well ahead of time this time… and I’ll check it 5 times….

Can’t stand the lecture from my dad anymore… 🙄

Jill lists are easy 😀 but you have to remember to read them !!! so you make a list to remind you to remember you have made a list, you get by any way, the get out clause is I’m sure I was waiting for you to call me, I am so sorry

Mom says it is because we are all so busy.
But with all these modern gadgets to make our lives easier, it just doesn’t add up.

    It’s all familiar territory.

Every time I set off in my van to go and do a job I nearly always remember something that I have forgotten to put in the van. I cannot remember (see what I did there) The number of times I have had to stop on my way to check that there is something in the back that I may have forgotten – or even had to turn around and go back to collect something.

Thank goodness for mobile phones (Alison – can you bring me my drill 😕 )

My internet/phone/power line was down at home the other day (big electrical storm) … didn’t realise how much modern gadgets rule our lives – just in communication. My diary is computerised, my contacts are computerised…. no one uses pen and paper anymore..

Hard to do business without computers now

And there’s me thinking I’m the only sign maker who suffers from memory loss. 😮 I always forget some lettering or tools on every job.
The best one is driving home 18 miles….parking up on the drive and realising there I’ve got a 400mm roll of application tape on the roof of the van. 😳 😳

My 71 yo father keeps forgetting stuff all the time, AND he blames me for not reminding him.

I accept it now… partly because when I turn up to work he gives me a blank stare…. I usually start the day by saying ‘dad, its me… your son’… then that look turns to horror. Like he’s saying ‘I"VE GOT A SON?’ sorta thing :lol1:

My son says it is something that I have to look forward too…. I just look at him and say ‘do I know you?’ 😮

gee Shane, why would Dad be relying on you to remember things… Didn’t you just say you were having problems with buses 1, 2, 3 & maybe 4. Poor old Dad

I blamed him for not remembering to check our kit before we left…. he blamed me for not reminding him to check the kit before we left 😕

Its a bit like tennis here… blame goes back and forth all day :lol1:

May be Dad could come over Tuesdays & Fridays. That would work well for me, Need somebody to blame, I tried blaming Gloria but that seemed to delay the arrival of the evening meal… sometimes for days.. Even tried to promote her to Management in charge of things that go wrong (:)
as i say Tues & Fridays lunch provided. If it helps he and I could include a brief session to discuss your frailties. (chat.)
    Looking forward to his arrival.
    cheers Mike

Tuesday will probably work, but Friday is no good for me. Its the last day of the week, I need someone to blame for the jobs that don’t get done by the end of the week.

I’ll try to remember to tell him about your offer for Tuesday though 🙂

I know what you mean Shane, I was doing the same thing too often. I now print the job out and tick each bit off as I put it into the box for transport then I thoroughly check the print out for all the ticks before I leave for fitting – not that I’m paranoid or anything.

I’m doing a cutting list as well Alan. It was my dads idea, but I’ll take credit for it 🙂

Oh the relief. . . I thought I was the only one to do this. Thanks so much for posting Shane hahaha 🙂

It’s got so bad that I now produce a cutting list with every set of graphics I am going to fit onsite. As I make my decal kits I check and tick off against the list. It only takes an extra minute or two, but I’m sure its saved me hours in wasted trips !

I have also made up a second tool kit to keep in the van as a backup, and I have not one but two tape measures that live in the glove box. I find tape measures are the worst culprit’s when it comes to disappearing just as you need them !

I love the idea of a list for cutting/transporting/applying!
    Very clever.
Now if I could only find my pencil.

    – Shane that’s all very funny and it does remind me of some of the folk i work with – blame tennis! I get round it by stating, – making sure you remember all the stuff is your responsibility! don’t always work but being blame free is just great and leaves you to get on without beating yourself up about forgetting!

Nigel, you need to meet my kids. They are experts at getting someone else to take the blame.

My 12yo daughter uses the line ‘dad, I’m a kid, and your the adult. I can’t be expected to take responsibility if there is an adult around at the time’ 😮

My 13yo son says ‘dad, I’m just a kid, and everyone knows kids are irresponsible’…. can’t argue with that 😕

I’m so glad to find other people are making the same mistakes.
I fitted an advert to the back of a bus last weekend, to keep the vinyl length down I closed the 2 tel numbers up till they were nearly touching.
"I must remember to cut them and space them correctly" I said to my wife.
Fitted them and stood back to look, an hour later I was back in the same position looking at the finished job WITH the correct spacing!

Both my kids have higher IQ’s than me already Nigel…. I don’t stand a chance. My wife reckons they have learned from the master tho….. whatever that means 😳 I blame the wife for letting them get away with it though….
