  • Can I use VHB on a panel 2440 x 600mm?

Posted by ANDREW S on July 22, 2008 at 10:01 am

    Hi Folks,
I have a large panel(s) of 3mm diabond to fix to a good Fascia board (plywood) – I would normally use either coloured screws or screw caps
but the customer wants "invisible" fixing ?

Can I use VHB on a panel 2440 x 600mm, if so could someone recommend
    any particular,

or perhaps tell the customer he will just have to look at the screws !! 😛

    Cheers
    A

I would not use VHB onto wood although I think some people have done. If the signs aren’t made yet the best way (only?) is to make them as trays and this way you have no face fixings.

Gavin is probably right about the wood aspect. we have attaches signs this size with 3m VHB tape applied about 18months ago with no problems.
but we were applying to steel.
    cheers Mike

if it’s on a wooden fasica, pop of the outer panel trims that hid the ends of the plywood and put a small rebate on them, put the trims back on using the rebate to hold the panels and a few screw hidden behind. it will also help stop the panel warping.

What about some sort of French cleat?

Aluminium angle, 2 bits on the wall, and 2 bits bonded onto the back of the dibond using whatever super strength glue of your choice you have (I have used evo stick serious stuff on my sign and its survived gales of wind and not wobbled)
and then rivet through the 2 bits of angle, solid as a rock.
    and no visible fixings.

    See how it is?
I tried to go all sign-techhie and Phill thought I was being naughty.
I myself have never tried a French cleat (I don’t install signs)
but it seemed like a smart solution.
