  • Why do tiffs change colour?

Posted by Peter Normington on December 21, 2008 at 10:29 am

If I take a photo in tiff format, when I viewe/ open it the colours are almost but not quite reversed, attached is a screen shot of some stock photos that also do the same, but they are Jpg, in my picture browser the parrots are wrong but open in corel OK
I just took the picture of my phone and one is a tiff but imports wrong.

    any ideas?

    Peter

Corel ‘Draw’ will simulate colours if Colour Management is On (which is default), the other SignLab question about CMYK / RGB JPEG importing kinda said to me if SignLab cannot import a CMYK JPEG then I can see all kinds of colour matching problems if you relying on it, but thats now answered that it can.

A picture originates as a RGB (image taken with a dark background), it then gets converted to CMYK if your document space is CMYK (white background) which is suitable for printing. Monitor profiles tell the application how to display that colour. Basically colour management links the input photo (camera profile) to your corel draw tuned screen (monitor profile), to your JV33 tuned profile (printer profile). Complicated hey

Sorry, I was just using signlab to show the difference in colours, the tiffs are shown like that on my camera, and windows picture viewer.
The phone tiff opens in Photo shop, and corel like its reversed.

I have a have an ingram disc that does the same with jpgs, when using picasa viewer, but the images open OK, so I thought it was a problem with Picasa, but having taken some photos with my camera and saving as tiffs they view and open wrong?
    Its confusing me.

The food pictures are jpgs shown in picassa but open ok in signlab

Sorry Dave didn’t understand any of that. All I know is if I design a business card in corelx4 then export it as a tiff to desk top then it looks like Peters’ example, send it to printer and it comes back the same as corel shows it. must admit it’s a nervous 3 days waiting to see what I get

I suspect like Dave that it is a colour management issue. Is it possible that the Tiffs have a profile allocated to them and this is in conflict with the Windows one (if one is set)
