Thanks for the replies, i also spoke to the supplier of the ink and paper who said the rip software for the two machines which print my work via posterprint lays down more ink than the other two which use versa works, but reducing that would weaken the colours.

it only really seems to be a problem with black, which, as it is going on to fabric has to be as black as possible.

are there any good go to resources to learn about wide format printing, i have been thinking of getting a machine for a while now, and now i can justify it i need to know what i am looking for and why?
i know that sounds naive, but the first company i contracted the work out to made a complete mess, and this one is ok when things are going smooth, but not much help if there are any technical difficulties.

    thanks

thanks for the reply, i’ve done layering before, but not as complex as this,
trouble is i will have to start with the pupils and work out, so getting them lined up would be critical,

i have given it more thought, and, would the best method be to print out the graphics with a plotter pen, then tape them to the outside of the window to give me a guide?

in case its of use to anyone else heres an update on what i found,

"Corel does allow you to measure the length of
compound curves if you don’t mind doing a bit of work. Enter a line of
periods with the text tool that is estimated to be several inches
longer than your curve. Select the text (periods) and the curve then
use the fit text to path. Corel will fit all the periods it can around
the edge of the curve at their actual kerned spacing, it will truncate
or remove any excess periods. Count the periods. Now enter two
seperate periods at the same point size as the originals, select them
and use the object parameter box (width-height) to see the length
(width). Multiply this times the number that it took to fit on the
    curve"

not really what i want to be doing

so i downloaded this (free file) and it works fine
i will just have to measure the original line, make a note, reposition, and tweak it till it is the same length 🙄
but it’s easier than printing out for a physical measure etc at least i will remain within x3

    http://www.macromonster.com/index.php?m … &Submit=Go

there is a feature in this that would do the job (i fact until activated the curve length calculater would still work) from a russian developer

    http://eng.plotcalc.com/learning.php

and also this one, i think a 14 day trial

    http://www.oberonplace.com/products/cur … m#Features

both of the above are about $50, and i might consider one of them when i have chance to look at them closer.
the oberon one looks like it might have a few interesting additions – and i’d appreciate any thoughts as i spend a lot of time connecting lines and breaking them apart

thanks for the replies – here is what i need it for
a customer has asked me to fabricate one of these for him.
the problem is the sheet has to be able to be adjusted from horizontal to near 90º (with a curve as in pic)
so anything which needs heat to form it would not be suitable.
i am not convinced that even though its refered to as a perspex table – it is actually perspex??

if you have roland cut studio you can import a jpeg or bitmap
go to image outline and turn up the density untill all the image becomes black and extract contour lines
it should then run a vector line around the image

or maybe use vector magic and delete all you dont need?

tomas – i just want to be able to work in photoshop and corel at a decent speed – especially when it comes to manipulating photos and rendering
i figured reasonably fast against price – as whatever i spend will be outdated in time – at least it is a low enough price to not be too bothered to replace in a yearor so.

Hi Barbara – yes we have a lot of things made now, and a 40/60m roll would be fine, the main thing is continuity,

its just a customer wants a lot of clothing made out of a material that none of my suppliers have – i thought perhaps you might have different suppliers so asked on the off chance.
    its a nightmare finding
    thanks though 😀

darz – from what i can gather – the process is

lay out holes along text or a design
cut them from thick media eg sandblast
move the loose rhinestones around and they should pop into the holes
lift off together with clear heat resistant application film

i have tried a few times with corel different designs and i think using the blend tool is best

i have ordered the component parts, some came today, the rest tomorrow
i think you can do it with corel – but i’ll know soon enough

although i don’t know how viable it is going to be with regards to costs
for instance the rhinestones would need to be about 50p for 10 gross, and they seem to be 10x that.
and sworovski prices are ten times that again 🙄

we really struggled finding dance garments – so much so we ended up having the majority of it made – that’s how we ended up with a small range, from different people asking for specific things we couldn’t source.

most of the suppliers – when i could find any – seem to have the stuff made in the far east – but need big volumes
i found a couple of suppliers in coventry for leotards etc but the lycra was really cheap shiny stuff. i could try addresses for you if i that’s any good?

i’ve only done a handful – all astra vans for some reason

only tips i can give is get plenty of film – and don’t expect the first attempt to be useable(unless you’re lucky) – although you will see what you need to do and not to do from it.

cut the film roughly oversize, cover the outside with soap, place the film on wrong way round, and then flatten a horizontal line across the width till it starts to make fingers, and then heat the fingers gently to shrink the film.

other tip is to get quality film – as with a lot of things, better quality makes it a little easier

theres a good choice here http://www.johnsonwindowfilms.co.uk/

not sure if this is any good to you unless its a pretty active street with a party going on (or a nightclub nearby)
i bought this and a few other images from istock photo a while back for a dance school (the others would be no good unless you want a ballet dancer and break dancers)

you might be able to use one or two of them them with things others people might have – like i say – they’re pretty animated if it’s a calm setting

i had to do some phrases in thai for a kickboxing school

you need to install the language you want from windows
then find a free font online
you can then switch to the different language on your pc
from what i can remember the thai had about 44 characters
and these all corresponded to a different key on the keyboard
they used more than just the letters so i just hit every key in sequence and printed off a list
then it was a case of matching the symbol to the key
i was given the phrases in english so had to go off an online translator – so if you have the script it will be easier

very laborious but it was something different and it turned out well

hi jane – perhaps it’s the blade you are using?

some of the thicker film needs to be cut with a 60º blade (red) and not a 45º (blue)
ie flock etc wont weed if it is cut with a 45º blade

Finally – any suggestions as to how to rectify the damage? Is it a DIY job to rub down the remaining lacquer and respray – or should I leave it to the professionals.

i painted cars for years before doing this.
you can do it yourself if you have a decent gun and a compressor – but not with cans – not a roof. also you’ll need quite a bit of tackle. only bits and bats, but unless you can borrow it could add up to cosing more than paying a painter to do it for you.
i would suggest remove the rest of the clear coat completely, spray the whole roof with something called ‘bar coat’ to isolate any contaminants from the old clear. then primer filler – followed by base coat – then clear.

i’d say if you can get someone to paint it for you for £80-100 let them have the hassle –

it’s debatable if isocyanates are carcinogenic or not – but they can enter via the pores and the tear ducts. it will sensitise you to asthma and once sensitsed a small amount can trigger an asthma attack.
the damage it can do is accumulative.

you really need a fully filtered breathing system – ie an air fed mask fed from an external source with a filter system capable of delivering pure air.
it might sound ott – but thats just for general requirements/hobbyist.

if its a proper working environment with employees then you really need to look into the hse requirements or you leave yourself liable, but more importantly leave your employees exposed.

just a quick one that sprung to my mind when i first saw your logo

if you were changing things how about drag-on de-signs?

you get the drag racing (i know redundant)
but i initially thought it meant drag as in ‘drag and drop’ – ‘cut n paste’ with ref to design software
    then the dragon for wales
    designs and also signs

perhaps i could make a suggestion

as this topic rises time and time again – and gets people worked up – would it not be a good idea for uksb to create a ‘chinese plotter’ section.

then anyone with problems would be able to post there – and anyone who didn’t want to be associated with them could stay away – and those willing to help could offer help and advice.

i originally bought a chinese rabbit, set it up myself, and realised within weeks two things,
1 – what i wanted to use it for was viable
2 – that i did need a better quality machine

i got a roland and couldn’t be happier.

in business it is essential to mitigate losses – and at the outset it is prudent to tread carefully.
i do think there is a lot of hostility towards anyone not ‘established’ for at least x years.
    and i can’t see why.

i have an industrial unit – pay business rates – and have a traders policy.
but i understand those who have been trading for many years from home.

live and let live – its a big world and you will only survive if you provide a decent service.

if you can’t get them from anywhere else – cobra seat logos are here – but you will need to contact them for access.
sometimes if you explain you are making a sign/lettering a van for a distributor they will email you an image – sometimes they will tell you the distributor has to download it for you.

neoprene ‘should’ be ok – as when i was sourcing sheets i looked at rubber, neoprene and silicone (because i was being quoted £180/m2 for silicone at 8-10mm)

if you don’t go higher than the normal 170° range – it seems neoprene is fine up to around 270° and down to -50°

but silicone is from -150° to 559°

the cheapest i could find anywhere is here – on special offer for the 8mm silicone sponge.

    http://www.samco.co.uk/#SPECIALS

it is 1mx0.6m, and with delivery and vat works out around £40.
but you will get 2 38×38 pads and enough to make different shapes for odd items etc.

i have some 8mm silicone sheet i got to make up some different size pads for my small heat press.
i wanted it for panels surrounded by deep seams, sleeves and to isolate zips etc.

it is the same sponge silicone with a smooth face on both sides as is on most heat presses – although it’s a white/cream – not the usual clay/red colour.

what size is your press? i will have a 38×38 definitely, and maybe a 38×50, but would have to check.

let me know if its any good for you.

    thanks for the replies guys

ian – it’s for printing and cutting, as he wants it on stationary and labels along with signs and banners

harry – not sure about the powerclip function

hugh – i’ll have a go at working through your description later- it sounds like it makes sense. i think what i have been doing wrong previous is for such as this – drawing a circle, manually inserting the lines, then using the shape tool to break apart – but – not joining the lines as ian noticed.

although its prob not good practice – its only become a problem here as i needed to fill with colour to print from it as well as cut.

daveyboy – perfect – thanks – i can get on with it while i suss out the proper techniques 😀

Adam – i would get in touch with canon and ask if they will honour their warranty

a saving is a saving and with a lot of products – especially in todays mail order society – you will return the item direct to the manufacturer and not the vendor, or the manufacturer will send out an engineer to make repairs on site.

    it’s worth a try

you were actually luckier than you thought on a couple of points hugh

the exact same thing happened to me a few years ago whereby i had a just changed a commercial policy and the new one didn’t cover me for other peoples cars,

i got 6 points and £60, it was done at court, and i was told that it was only because on balance of probability they believed it was a genuine error the fine and points were the minimum allowed, so you were fortunate it was looked at as an error

    but

the guy who i had borrowed the car i was stopped in also got 6 points and £60 – so your wife was lucky too

i now have a traders policy – and wouldn’t touch anyone elses car/van without one. don’t all those involved in lettering have one?

    quote Peter Dee:

    quote John Childs:

I can’t help thinking that some of these methods involve more trouble and effort than just unrolling the vinyl and measuring it. 😀

Some of my large commercial vehicle jobs have runs of 4m per side and need totals of 8m, 16m for 1 or 2 vehicles.
If I need 16m then it is far easier to weigh the roll than unroll that amount.
It might seem a hassle to make up the spreadsheet initially but there are certain times (not the odd few meters) where it is very handy.

i see what a lot of you are saying about unrolling it and measuring it – but it was the scenario described by peter that i really was talking about.
after around 3-4 meters i can imagine it would become awkward.

is the spreadsheet fairly simple to put together?
