What would you say about the roland Camm 1pro I found it in the ‘grafityp’ brochure. would this work with illustrator? Would it be best to buy it directly from roland rather than somewhere else? Last question, Would you reccomend buying the 700mm max width or 915mm or 1372mm? There’s a massive difference in price. Thanks
-
PC’s have defiantly caught up and are on a par. Macs used to have the graphics advantage and the fact you could run Quark. All changed now a days.
-
After playing around with the advice I managed to make this below, in under 1min. It would have been a lot of messing around without help, now knowing the right proceeder with Illustrator I can now make up this sort of graphics with-out hassle, well done and cheers!
-
That’s amazing help and it’s so simple when told, I would have never found it tho. Cheers guys
I have followed your steps but I am having problems when I switch back into ‘fill view’ or pixel view. On mine it fills the centers in and a ‘?’ appears in the colour fill, would I just delete these afterwards for proofing purposes?
-
Hi Warren, how would you make a double outline (border) on text in illustrator? All my training DVDs are not geared to show how to use illustrator as a sign package. [/img]
-
I just tried what you suggested in; stroke > outline stroke > minus back was this correct?
Thanks for the advise on corel, I have had corel 8 for years and used to love it, but since working for a few big sign companies they trained me a little to use illustrator and they swore by it, however it seems to take 5 times as long. I love the design capabilities of illustrator and like you say its compatibility with photoshop which is handy but I am still not convinced for simple text signmaking
-
What I mean is, put a stroke on the text > uncolour the fill > outline stroke > Release compound path and delete centers of each letter > make compounds .
It’s a lengthly sequence just to put double boarder on the text. Or even make it 3D etc. I have a few training DVDs that I have bought and none of them cover illustrator for signmakers. Thanks
-
Probably not practical but I know companies charge S*it loads for metal business cards, Here’s how you could make brass ones, Prob. sell them for £2.00 each

I have been looking around for printers / cutters, because at the moment I am outlaying a lot of print work. What would be anyone’s recommendation on this Roland VersaCAMM Printer/Cutter?
http://www.grafityp.co.uk/Printers/prin … sp300v.htm
would it be worth paying a few grand more and getting the 54inch?

-
Nice 1. Have just contacted them.

Hi There for the suggestions. It would probably be easier to buy an interface however the price is still extortionate. Thanks again.

Thanks for all the help on this topic. I have spoken with a couple of people mainly my old man. I have taken a note on exactly how much time is taken on every job. I did before but this time I did it exactly.
So now I know that 2 hours to cut 5m of 610 vinyl with a RABBIT plotter is where most of my problems lye. Before I didn’t realise I was spending so much time cutting. I have worked on various different cutting machines, Rolands, Mimaki etc. and you could set off a 5m at once and leave it until it had finished. I am having to stop after each set of words and turn off the plotter, otherwise it will mess up. I take it the Budget Rabbit plotter has less memory than my mobile phone.
What do you think I should do? Just cut small jobs on my plotter and send off bigger jobs. Or save to get a top of the range plotter?
😉

That’s good help there. If I have only been in business a year with a smallish portfolio, then can I still charge up-front, do you think?

I was looking at this printer today
http://www.epson.co.uk/printers/ultrach … rinter.htm
What I did before I bought my inkjet was to look on http://www.ukdvdr.co.uk
and find the cheap cartridges (0.89p each) then find the relivant printer, which happened to be a cheap epson C64 on ebay. Cheap and cheerful, I use Monde laser paper from paper co, and I get perfect print quality for proofing etc. -

try this but make sure you do a virus scan on it as I have never downloaded from this before so don’t know? I hope this site’s legal, I think it’s freeware but may have to check first.

Thanks for your help, I found some problems to be with Corel draw. The plotter would crash so I would close corel draw turn off the plotter then re-open, it would then cut ok for about 3-4 goes. So maybe will try Artcut on Vista laptop. I couldn’t find any com ports in the device manager, It would only show up the Rabbit in USB, however I needed to change the settings on the com port?
Cheers

Cheers peps!! some wicked help there! like mentioned, I do need to look at the admin side of things, I know my design and signmaking abilities are not lacking obviously can always improve on things. Was speaking to my old man who runs a successful business he mention profit/loss forecasts predictions and basic accountancy, Does anyone know a good accountancy program? I have Microsoft money but it fries my brain, any ideas?
Also I have the price guide from http://www.priceitsignguide.com I found the vehicle pricing to be spot on, but couldn’t get on with the other prices. I found a local sign company quoted £1400 for a large 2x bit dibond sign with edging and big polished cut-out letters on the face, I said to the customer about £300 – 400 at a guess. does that mean I am far too cheap in comparison? Is there a better way to get my pricing right?
Thanks

I am living off the missus at the moment, not ideal I know. I am working partly from home I usually work from 8.00am to 10.00 or 11.00pm. Think my pricing may be a little out, because as soon as it comes in it goes out.

Norton has not good great ratings but i suppose it’s personal preference, I have heard it works with some people and not with others, If you want to pay for top notch look at this http://shop.trendmicro.com/uk/?site=Goo … =acqUK0001
PC Cillin the best around for virus protection, or if your like me and don’t like spending use avast antivirus but make sure you download from download.com for security, also download for free from download.com ‘spybot search and destroy’ Hope this helps

I have finally given up on that Cheap Rabbit plotter from EBay(quote)
I am sorry to hear about your Rabbit Tim. I am having the same problems, mine keeps crashing after sending too much down, not even going to go there. I am intrigued with this Roland GX 24, So it prints onto vinyl and is a plotter? Where can you buy these, will have to speak to mr bank manager again.

MemberJanuary 3, 2008 at 10:58 am in reply to: Sign Maker designs & markets his own patented vinyl rackThat’s funny you mentioned this. I am in the process of making my own. I have a cheap vinyl cutter. It’s the one where you have to put a bar through the vinyl tube to hold it in place. So I have made the same sized round bar to rack my vinyl on. I am sure it will save loads of time in the long run.
Cheers for this

What about the edge of the image, where it feathers out like a transparent, wouldn’t you see white edges. or do you mean make the white backing smaller?

thanks for the advice. I originally had a white oval to back the image but the customer said he just wanted the flowers. How does this printed etch work? because you would have to print on the adhesive side?
