• which printer?

Posted by Matt Hards on March 13, 2008 at 5:30 pm

    Hi all,

I need a new printer, and I dont know what to buy, I have a high quality canon pixma photo printer, very good for prints.

But i need a new printer for my office. I need it for estimates, invoices and design proofs, so has to be able to print colour. I am not to good on printers really, i dont know whether i should have a colour laser, but i dont use it as much a busy office etc, so might not be cost effective to keep warming it up etc.

    Please help

    Matt

    Laser consumables expensive.
Good quality ink jet, Canon or Epson the only way to go I think

Matt, I bought an Epson all in one thing, with a scanner, fax, photocopier and printer in one. Doesn’t take up much space and does everything I need it to.

I bought an OKI 5600 around 6 months ago pretty expensive at around £400 but soon made that back by printing a few tee’s using the magic touch tee transfer paper. I now use it for everything from quotes to invoices and vehicle templates, Dont think i could go back to inkjet they take sooo long to print. But they arent the cheapest to run though.

I myself got a Epson R265, not an all in one but a decent spec for a small amount of cash, if you plan on printing loads then i’d opt for an aftermarket CIS (continuous ink system) otherwise at around £40 for a set of epson inks its going to work out expensive, I recently got a full set of inks 200ml of all 6 six colours for £12.

Saves a lot of money, print quality is still top notch.

I was looking at this printer today

    http://www.epson.co.uk/printers/ultrach … rinter.htm

What I did before I bought my inkjet was to look on http://www.ukdvdr.co.uk
and find the cheap cartridges (0.89p each) then find the relivant printer, which happened to be a cheap epson C64 on ebay. Cheap and cheerful, I use Monde laser paper from paper co, and I get perfect print quality for proofing etc.

This is the printer i now have.

the epson R265 which retails about £60

and this is the CIS i got too approx £35, yeah a little unsightly and a few minutes to fit. but worth it.

i got a cheap c48 too, they are good but the cartridges dont last long and to get good good print results you have to print in quality mode which to be honest takes while.

I used to use the cheap cartridges too but these worked out more expensive than the CIS, each cartidge is around 10ml of ink for a £1

the CIS is filled with 200ml of ink when you get it.

    epson C?? 10ml x 20 = 200ml (£20 for one colour.)

CIS all full of ink 6 colours (200ml each x colours) approx £35

Then every time to fill it, it is approx £2 a bottle (200ml) £12 a set which saves you even more money.

I think i can even remember getting a full set of full ink bottles with my CIS.

Its the cheapest possible way of printing i find. Although the refilling takes a few minutes to do and i would recommend wearing gloves as the ink can get everywhere.

    Hope this helps

I decided on a colour laser recently. Mainly because I got fed up with blocked nozzles on an inkjet; 3 years for it to print a page; plus the fact that laser printed stationery just looks better. I also got a cheap and cheerful black and white laser for invoices. The toners are a fair bit of money but they last for bloody ages.

Agree with Andy, laser would be the way to go. Mega fast print, sharp print, and unlike inkjet you can leave it for months then switch on and the first print will still be perfect.

A few years ago we bought a 2nd hand lexmark optra s1855 with duplexer unit, on ebay. That lasted nearly 4 years. It dies, and I picked up another on ebay for $45- same model- still a great black & white machine.
Using non-genuine high-yield toner cartridges at $85 each, for 16 000 pages, makes about 1/2 a cent per page, or in sterling at the current rates, it’s about 4 pages per penny for toner cost.

The duplexer is well worth having. It’ll also do 1/2 tone prints, and 18 to 20 pages per minute print speed- it’s a very good unit- especially for the price.

2nd hand colour lasers are a different thing- beware- but 2nd hand B&W ones can be very good if you know a bit about the individual one.

There’s also a fixyourownprinter dot com website that is very useful.
