  • what type of sign traditional or modern shaped sign?

Posted by Jamie Kimp on January 30, 2008 at 10:24 pm

I have to make a sign for a big Caravan park. They need two large post signs to go either side of the entrance.
One of the options I was going to give them was a woodland shaped sign. The other was a sign from ‘DurableSigns.com’ a metal post sign with a large anti-graffiti section with slats under (lighted)

I am unsure what marterial to use for the shaped sign and design. I am just lost for ideas on this one, Has anyone got some inspirational help…

Here’s the image of the modern durable sign option http://www.durablesigns.com/images/trayslatport.jpg

I normally look in google images for inspiration, however this time nothing there.

    Many Thanks

    Jamie K.

That’s some amazing work there, I don’t know about carved signs though. It would be good to do a carving on the sign or maybe make the actual shape of the sign look like something. Think I have a long way to go on this one.

Get some nice 4×4′ posts and some ornate heads, using a round 1/4 inch ish router blade carve 2 or 3 grooves the length of the posts, but reducing in depth up to the surface about 4" from each end the sign reaches to (if you know what I mean)
then route a groove slightly bigger all the way down the insides of each post the width of the substrate you will be using 3mm etc for dibond.
you can then make a composite sign using dibond, perspex etc putting dowel etc in the groove for each section of the sign to rest on.

Not sure if it makes sense or not but Ill try and find a picture.

There’s some great advice there peps. I will def. look for the fiberglass option when I was in the US. I saw sign after sign made from it, But couldn’t find anyone over here.

The second idea is good for another option to give the customer

    Cheers guys

Where else would you search for inspiration? Google images is very limited. Any other ideas. I need to put together 3 options for this entrance sign. Cheers

What Steve has shown can easily be produced using Ashby Trade.
    2 square posts with finials
1 contour cut panel with the sides folded 90 degrees.
    Just add graphics!

I was thinking more make it yourself from wood, but Ashby can do the stuff too yes.
Depends how craftsman like you feel, and how much you want to spend.

Both options sound great, I might as you say make it myself, Would I get the paint finish (with-out spraying)?

    Cheers guys

Look up Jotun pain, its very expensive, (£65 for 5 litres sort of expensive)
but its good on signs and exterior wood, and guaranteed against permeation and delamination etc.
Think its got some sort of plastic in etc, they paint the qe2 and the eiffel tower with a type of Jotun paint, not the same one obviously but one of their line.

will do thanks. I know I am asking alot of questions but first job like this. What sort of price would I have to charge for something on this scale, They require two of the same signs.

Here’s a couple we’ve done. Both jobs are fabricated from MDO plywood. The dimensional letters are HDU. Paint is enamel.
