Posted by Peter Mindham on August 23, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Hi all sad as me to be working on a Saturday night!

Am using ill 10 and having a problem with the £ sign. Keep getting the # and not £ when using ‘shift 3’. Keyboard set to english and it works in word no problem. Can anybody suggest any fix> I have set the preferences to uk english in the program but no good. Using a PC.

Please help as a big job on and want to get it done tonight!!

    Thanks Peter

This MIGHT work as a quick fix…

type a £ in word and copy ‘n’ paste it into adobe.

from then on in – just hit PASTE whenever you need one.

(Done this for ‘special’ characters before)

another way on a standard key board

press and hold alt key type 156 on the No key pad release alt key.

there are some fonts that don’t contain all characters.

Chris that worked a treat! The font has the sign in as it works in other programs.

    Thanks all

Peter – I’ve had a similar problem with Casmate. I think it’s because the keyboard can get re-configured accidently with a couple keystrokes. Re-booting the PC always puts it back to it’s original configuration and it works properly again

I would love to use illustrator more often as I use Photo Shop all the time and would like the compatibility, but Corel works all the time every time without hassle. I always seem to get problems with Ill. I know more practice would help but I have been using both programs over 20 years and still find Corel preferable. Same as Macs. Would love to switch but it is just too much hassle to drop the PC’s I think.

You need to change it from US keyboard setting if it’s not already in UK setting. Just an idea

Peter try Corel Photo Paint it has virtually everything PhotoShop has and you would have your compatibility and linking with Draw. I would like to know from someone who uses both what they consider to be better in PhotoShop over PhotoPaint, terminology maybe different but what everyday feature used for signs is better.

    Hi Peter

I sympathize with you, Illustrator is a great program but takes a lot of learning. Stick with it and you´ll be rewarded. I´ve used both corel and illustrator since 10 years back but illustrator is far superior. And of course every couple of years adobe decide to update and move all the menu´s to different places which drives you insane not to mention the cost of buying the new version!

In my opinion the upgrades of Adobes programs are rather cheap. The smallest of the suites, Design Standard, costs £135 to upgrade. Hardly loads of cash considering what you get. And you don’t have to get all the upgrades. CS3 contains nothing I really need/want in Illustrator/Photoshop. CS2 has some awesome features I couldn’t live without though.
