Sounds like you have a real good set up Rob!

Thanks for the link I must look into that! Although we are considering buying a large press/guillotine for our steel workshop so hopefully I can knocking those types of this out shortly!

Might seem a stupid question with an obvious answer but I just want to be sure I understand what you are referring to!

    Qualifications – I don’t expect so I certainly wasn’t asked for any!

Unfortunately I hadn’t a lot to do on it just the 3 logos and a small picture. It was blue, yellow and silver already!

It caused quite a fuss with the neighbours though!

  • quote Simon Clayton:

The word is a trademark same as Suzuki, Honda, Ford etc using any of these words even if its not in there company font is breaking the law.

I do not agree with this at all simon as the word "ford" as per the Collins English dictionary means
"a shallow area in a river that can be crossed by car, on horseback, etc."

If I feel the need to use the word ford on a T-Shirt there is no copyright/trademark that can stop me doing this. However, if I used the Ford motor car font that they have clearly marked with a TM then I would be breaching copyright.

    Check these out:

    http://www.silverstone.com/
    http://www.silverstonerally.co.uk/

Surely they cant all be infringing copyright law?

GO with the T-Shirt I cant see it being a problem.

Just to clear up the powder coating for you. Powder coating is the use of dry powder rather than wet paint. They spray with powder onto the product and normally pass it through a heating booth, when heated it gels together and produces the painted finish. It often gives a tougher finish that wet paint applications. I am almost sure that coloured Diabond sheets are powder coated, hence you can get it glossy and mat. It is a very popular and common method of painting.

I prefer foamex for edges like that as it is not as brittle as acrylic and is more forgiving when in the router and for fitting.

If you are using Diabond be careful of the glue you use as some of the 2 part glues can dimple the face of the diabond.

This is just my 2 cents worth from the different signs I have done, for what its worth!

They just said it had to be laminated with enough eyelets to support it along its length.

    Gert,

There are good and bad and I do agree that sometimes trust people can instill responsibility but if you dont have protection methods you leave yourself open for all sorts.

You wouldnt go a way for the weekend leave your front door open and put up a sign saying you’re gone for a few days! Instead you would lock the doors and turn on the burglar alarm and if very advanced check the cctv from your hotel!

I dont see the difference in protecting your business and your home, bearing in mind it is the reason you have a roof over your head!

Thanks, having a brief look at those articles they will be quite useful and, like shane says, given that I intend to tell all employees about the monitoring in place from the outset they hopefully shouldnt be up in arms over it. With out reading through all the information yet I am pretty confident that if you have a "no personal use of PCs Policy" then monitoring shouldnt affect the employees human rights.

I see it does say that monitoring is ok to prevent crime so therefor if it is preventing "unknown homers" should also be acceptable.

    Dave,

You are 100% nothing is full right proof but as employer you need some sort of tool to use to discourage people from getting up to things they shouldnt be. As I said I dont intend to take it too far and I dont see it being needed as evidence etc. I gave our office girl 2hrs on the internet the other day to book the F1 at silverstone on my time. She’ll make it up some time when there is a rush on but she knows to ask as I can monitor the web activity of all our PC’s.

Its a bit of give and take on both sides but surely no one can advocate homers without the permission of the owner???

    Richard,
in my scenario productivity and sinister are linked but the sinister bit really aggravates me! I think that when I am not here I have jobs going out that I know nothing about! Thats just not right in anyones book!

I would rather put monitoring in, tell all the staff and let them grumble for a while and eventually it will blow over. I wont be annoying them as long as they keep their nose clean! There shouldnt be a problem!!

Again I dont want to be a police force just get a fair days work for a fair days pay.

Windows logons are simple – monitor it for a while to see who is doing something they shouldnt then pull all the staff in and tell them that a logging system is in place, its based on logins under individual usernames so it is crucial that they kept their lo gins to themselves. I dont think they will chance swapping logins!

I have plenty of staff i can trust but there is no one can tell me that even the best of staff don’t slack now and again!! Hell even I get off days and I am the boss! I dont intend it to be a new police force just a mechanism to ensure that I dont carry freeloaders.

As I said earlier each to their own but the more employees you have the more you need to monitor their output/productivity! And, in my opinion, the only person you can truly trust in business is yourself! Even the odd wife has run off with another man and half a business in the past! (Just in case anyone thinks I dont trust my wife then thats definitely not the case but it does happen!)

For those of you who operate swipe card systems – how do you find this works? More particularly to anyone who does not always start from base each day. i.e many of our staff go direct to site if that is a shorter journey.

Up until last year we employed approx 100 but we are at half numbers at the minute.

The sign business was always a sideline that I started through uni and as we were very busy with construction activities I just done our own vehicles, friends and locals.

As work is slower now I decided to invest a bit more time to the signs and bought a new print and cut set up along with employing a full time, experienced, sign maker.

The signs office is away from the main office and factory, where I spend most of my time, but I need to be sure what Is going on when I am away from either.

I have a bit of internet abuse in the office but the monitoring software put a stop to that! Without any ill feeling between staff- as they are in general they are mostly very good they just push the boundaries to see what they could get away with. When I produced the reports they were so embarrased they could hardly speak! Now I hear them telling the rest not to abuse the internet outside their lunch breaks!

Each to their own in terms of what way they approach staff – I would give mine the shirt off my back if they ASKED for it but god help them I they just assume they can take it!

Hopefully this reads ok as I am typing it on my phone which isn’t easy when I’m writing a big long rant!

Indvidual logins for each user. The tracing software will pick up who is logged in. I use a much simpler method for our construction office which just picks up each persons internet history under their user account. A free piece of software called iehv.

Phil, I probably will install CCTV at a later date but if I can monitor jobs sent to the printer then I can check what is being done the info this produces would do the same job as cctv.

Matty, I employ quite a number of people and I have always found given the chance a certain percentage of staff will not perform as you would like them for a large percentage of the time. I don’t see this as demotivating staff just protecting a business you have worked hard to set up! I am a very fair employer and have a good relationship with my staff but lately I have concerns over what my machines are being used for! Hence the need for monitoring. If an employee has nothing to hide this shouldn’t be a problem and if it is then they are there too long!!

Sorry if this sounds tough but if i took the lend of your car, drove all the fuel out of it and left it back empty you wouldn’t be best impressed! 😕 😕

I have revised my logo throughout this process. Harry used a font in a similar style to the one I posted. He added a black background which I added a yellow bubble to the bottom. He then suggested an outline which I like and have adopted along with the lighting effects.

Since then Jill has sent through another option which I liked the colouring of and adapted my own as per below:

I think, to be fair, that it has been a two way interaction with worked examples and I really appreciate all the help I have got along the way!!!

I a few ideas similar to your clock face (but not as good to be honest) but I never thought of the digital one! it looks sharp!

This designing your own logo is a nightmare I cant make my mind up at all! My problem is, while I agree that the Shutterstock images may date and they are no substitute for a unique logo, I personally like the bold statement the image makes!

I am thinking of running with it (or a modified version based on everyone’s comments) as a marketing tool for the re-branding exercise and working on some of the suggestions to get the design of the logo spot on.

What are peoples opinions on colour? I prefer the type of colours Jill used last but I think the red and black is more striking?

Again thanks for all the great help so far!

    Kenny,

No, the paperwork is the easy part. Making sure you hit all your existing customers is the important part.

We recently rebranded our construction company and the paperwork more or less took care of itself. (although the Admin girls wouldn’t agree with me!!)

We are constantly marketing ourselves through exhibitions, flyers and telsales to ensure we dont miss out on any existing business and generate plenty more!!

If its a good business decision dont hesitate. If, like David referred to, its an annual thing then think carefully!

I still like my original design but the previous posts have left me asking myself did I take the easy way out!!

I only recently bought a 1400 top heated easymount laminator. It seems a very good, reasonably priced, laminator. The only complaints my guys have is that it is quite hard to work around compared with the Seal laminator they were used to. The guards are often in the way when both open and closed, (I know they can be removed but i dont think my insurance company would be too happy if something happened) the rollers and temperature sensors are located close together making it difficult to grab the material at times.

Depending on what you are laminating the heated option may be a requirement! If I am right in saying (although I am new to laminators and this is not the voice of experience!) you need top heated rollers for laminating roll ups etc.

of the two i like the top one but hows about a new tag line? Reinvent yourself through a catchy strap line!? The need to differentiate yourself from the brush men might not be necessary but it does not harm to differentiate yourself from the competition!

THis means that you have a connection between you and the box but nothing to do with the Internet!

At my mothers place they often have to enter the modem address and manually connect to the internet! BT have no idea why this is the case and keep giving them some fob off storey that it is the cabling!

when you have no internet connection try logging onto the router and check your internet connection. Let me know what it says.

If you dont know how to log into the router give me the name and model number and Ill try and tell you how too!

You need to find a happy medium. I personally have never taken a number from the back of a van. A professional vehicle creates a lasting impression and if the potential client recognises your advert when they are looking a service you provide then I think you will be more likely to get a chance to quote for the work.

Sony, addidas, mercedes etc play on their name rather than their products – their name is what they are!

Certainly Bobby Johnson wont mean a lot on its own and emphasising the service will do no harm but dont sacrifice a snappy layout for telephone numbers, websites etc! (in my opinion).

this is a link to a very handy free pdf printer (just in case it is not pre-installed) you can create pdf’s from any program (word, excel, corel, flexi) with ease.

Sure the graphics packages have the facility but this is a handy add on to any system. ie. you can protect your quotes/invoices etc by sending them as a pdf!

Thanks Dave. I’ll rethink the post depth based on your suggestions.

I think I am on the cheap side depending on fitting time but time will tell as I sent it to the customer today!

Post liners are a good idea by the way!

Neil thanks that make me feel more confident with my choice.

Rob I am worried my current cutter is on its last legs so I dont want to be left using the print and cut for vinyl work as a result of spending all my money on a print and cut machine! If you see my logic. If I had a new cutter I would definitely go print and cut!

John/Peter/Jason, another quick one if you can help: I am going with the Mimaki cutter (bundle) and the SR is approx £1K less than the FX. Do you use either or can you advise if it is worth the extra money?

Ill check the mimaki board but thought you might be able to help me quicker. Hopefully this wont flag up as posting in the wrong forum as it is linked to the printer.

You are right John i did mean the JV33!! 😳 Thanks for your advice!

JV3 and separate cutter ordered. Like you (peter) I imagine i will be laminating quite a bit of my stuff as it will be for vehicles and areas that will need the laminated protection.

Thanks for all your input guys it make this type of transaction a lot easier!

Thanks martin I wasn’t thinking of using the print and cut for just cutting! Why I don’t know! I assume the cutter side of a print and cut is comparable to that of a stand alone cutter?

I was through the old posts till the wee hours of the morning last night and it was that split I thought Id try again and see if anyone would offer a strong answer!

I am mainly dealing with my local Robert Horne Group and they can supply both but they are steering me towards the Roland. I was fairly impressed with both to be honest but then I am new to it and havent got what might be called a "trained eye"!

Anyone any ideas on the signlab thing cos they full version is about twice the price!?

  • chris

for someone who has started up a sign business from scratch, having never worked in the industry prior, it has been a case of try it and see for the last 7 years! Thats probably whats going to happen with the printer too because I can read around them all day but without actually using one I dont believe you ever get a good grasp of the machines!

Can you point me in the right direction at all? What can I do to get a better grasp of a print machine? I am sending prints out on a weekly basis and feel it is time to try and do it in house from now on!

    Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks Guys,

Could some of you give me a crash course in vinyls? ie. The types and the most suited use – cast vinyl is normally used for…. Calendered is mainly for…..

I am a self taught and normally just use Avery 500 – I never thought to ask if there were alternative vinyl’s other than those for digital prints (vehicle wrapping type)! When it comes to recesses I try to apply the vinyl without stressing it. The problem with this is that it is hard to judge exactly where the graphic will then end up!

Just in case it was missed and it is causing confusion I do have a 1200 wide cutting machine already. Therefore I wont be stuck if a cutting job comes in at the same time.

Yes it would be handy to have a second cutter but I certainly am not at the level of production yet. All valid points though, thanks so far!

To be hones the price difference slightly favours the mimaki (£1000 approx) but that includes the laminators i mentioned but I havent checked how they compare. One could be much cheaper than the other thus throwing the overall figure off. Must check that! The Roland package seems to have a better training and support offering!

    Cheers

Thanks for all your input so far but now I am even more confused!

Is there any Roland fans out there? And am I mad considering print and cut in the one unit?

My preferred supplier are Roland agents and I like working with them so that was swinging it in Roland Direction! Now I am totally undecided!

Thanks John Ill look up that Mimaki

I have a graphtec ce2000-1200 so the print and cut machine was just for ease of use rather than chopping and changing from one machine to the other!

The other option my mimaki rep gave me was the JV33 printer and CG130FX cutter seperate and the titan 1060 laminator. This worked out slightly more expensive.

    Thanks guys,

I have had quotes for both Mimaki and Roland:

Roland VP540v with Seal 62 Base Laminator

    OR

Mimaki CJV30-130 with Titan 1060 Laminator (heat assist) or (Kala Bunny 140+ Cold Laminator)

price wise the Roland is working out slightly more expensive but I dont know enough to differentiate between the two options.

I am a small sign maker looking to expand but I know the machine will not be running all that regularly at the start! I would imagine I need to get one that is reasonably easy to maintain!?

The HP one doesnt seem to be print and cut which deters me from this option a bit!

    What do you guys think?
