Can anyone point me in the direction of a good t-shirt supplier in Ireland?
Ideally one is good for small orders, posts out quickly and does not charge too much for postage?
I have been ordering from the UK, but prefer to get them a bit closer to home if possible.
And if they also did long sleeved FOTL kids t-shirts.. that would be completely brilliant.
    thanks

Caramba in Finglas are the guys you need to speak to.

Thanks for that. I did come across their website but was unable to log in. I have send them an email….

Thanks all.. Sorry for the late reply…. been busy with other things…
It seems to be working well for me at the moment (although I try to limit the number I cut.) I did notice that the USB connection is a bit loose and I propped it up a bit… Either way, it is doing the job for me at the moment

hmmm… possible I suppose… but I don’t think I was asking to much of it… I think in general that my cutter has a prett cushy life with the little bit of work that I do.. So for the first time in its life I actually put it to work properly and it starts protesting!
I will see how it will act tonight…. fingers crossed and hope for the best?!?

Thanks for your help Neil. Yes. it has all been working fine in the past. But usually I cut only one at a time. This time I asked it to do 3 of the same (quite a complex design) so maybe it was struggling with the data? Twice it stopped, but at different places.
A reset did fix it (temporarily). Maybe I should just stick to cutting one at a time…….? 😮

and yes… would love to upgrade don’t know if it is possible). Or maybe just a new laptop?!?!? (wish hubby picked up on my frequent cursing as it keeps crashing on me, and got me a new one… Maybe I should just go out and buy one!)

Looks okay and I certainly was not touching it whilst cutting….
I am running the cutter from my laptop that has Vista (because I can’t get the cutter to work from my old computer with XP…. But that’s a different problem for some other time) 😀

If there is anyway I can help: export files to PDF to EPS or something… let me know…..

Forgot to mention that I did encounter problems with it on the new office computer (with windows 7).. After an update it kept telling me that the software key (dongel) could not be found…. Never looked into it really as that computer moved and I use my laptop or old XP computer for cutting……. 🙄

Just a note to say that I got all my bags printed with the tranfer paper I got yesterday… phew..
So what I learned this month is: that a low budget heat press can do the job… but low budget paper can’t.
At least I know better for next time.

Thanks Harry. I rang half of Cork today. I was quite amazed how hard it is to get the transfer paper.
Plenty of places in the UK or online, but with the time frame in mind I had to get it somewhere more local.
Anyway.. a stationary place in Bantry is helping me out and have put in a special order for me. I should have it tomorrow afternoon.
Fingers crossed that this is a better quality….

Well,,, I have just been experimenting… My conclusion: it is the paper…. I printed some of the old paper I had and that transfers without any problem.
The other stuff is so hit and miss. Every now an then it goes okay (more often not), but I have to peel it straight away.. a few second too late and it stays on the paper… I suppose with a small piece it is easy, but with a larger sheet that is hard!
So trying to source good quality paper locally (that could be tricky)….
Any suggestions for a supplier in West Cork?

Are you sure the issue is with the paper and not your press?
    Alan D

    It is possible?!?
I had loads of issues with the initial press they send me: it did not get hot enough. This replacement works okay I think: it heats up well (there is a few degrees difference between what the display says and what I read with a probe), but it is heating to 180 degrees no problem.
According to the instructions I should set the temperature between 160-180 degrees, press for 10 seconds and then peel hot.
When I did not get a good result I cranked up the temperature and increased the time (as it did not seem to come of the paper). But then the paper became brown… I am sure it was too hot…
I am sure it is me and I am just wondering what the best way is to get the settings right…
I hope I did not buy poor quality paper that I am wasting my time on… I did not buy expensive stuff (okay it was cheap: 100 sheets for £ 32, compared to many other papers)..
Should I go out and buy different paper, or keep fiddling with the settings?

Thanks for all hints and tips..
I spend ages trying to do something clever and more exciting only to realize that I was wasting my time as the highly opinionated customer (ie. husband) did not want anything like that!
So I ended up changing the type font to a classic Mrs. Eaves and I quite like that one …
I hope that, although it is very simple, it won’t offend anyone….

The idea of the background is nice.. something to keep in mind when it comes to designing the website etc.

    Thanks again all!

Thanks for that Martin & David.

I see the point about the colour… I like a burgundy, but I feel it should work in black and white as well.

I like what you did Martin, with the little swirl. I tried a few things like that but it became quite feminine in my opinion… Yours makes it more of logo rather than a letterhead… I like that.
I find the ‘J’ a bit of a problem… somehow I can’t get it to work, but I had not thought about using a shade of grey… good thinking….. It is certainly food for thought.. will try to do something with it on the weekend and let you know what I have come up with….

This is what I had come up with…..
I just tried a ‘classic’ serif font combined with something more modern for a contemporary feel…..
Husband is pretty happy with it, but I feel as if it is lacking something…. but not sure what it is…. As I said before, I am looking for some critique to move it along a bit.

I read in previous threads last week that some people feel that the forum is used as a free design service. I hope, because I am in infrequent user of this forum that I don’t get chucked into that category……Unfortunately in my circle of friends I have nobody I can ask for feedback, as this kind of work is not of much interest to them.
I have just purchased some books on-line to help me with this kind of work, but I find that critique on something I work on is more helpful than reading about the subject….

    Thanks

Hi, thanks. My Pcut is just USB. I’m slowly starting to get my head round it all after reading a few more posts. I think if I could get the Found New Hardware Wizard to launch I might just be able to nail it. Tried the Add New Hardware Wizard from the control panel but no joy there either. Any idea how to get the wizard to launch?
I have the user manual & software disk & followed all instructions to a T so why is am I having so much trouble?? :shake:

    Did you get/install the driver?

Although I am very happy with my cutter & Signblazer software (as I don’t do that much work on it) it is always a complete pain to install and get it running.
I had problems when installing it on windows 7 and more recently to get it cutting from the old computer that I set-up next to the P-Cut. After installing the driver and connecting it via USB it somehow came up as COM5 that I had to select for cutting. Don’t ask me why (when I cut from my laptop it is COM 4, even when connected to the USB).
So my advice is: throw all logic out of the window and try to select every port in the list in the Signblazer software. Eventually something will work…..hopefully…… a lot of cursing and swearing during this process helps too (to manage the frustration!!!!)
    Good luck with it! 😛

Are the edges exposed Angelique? That is the problem area with ply, I would use Marine ply for long term outdoor prestige work and WPB for lesser stuff and I would always try to frame it in some way.
Make sure to radius all the edges slightly as the paint skin is prone to crack along sharp edges as it expands and contracts.
You will be fine with Alu primer 2 u/cs and 2 topcoats….make sure to key the surface between the two topcoats.
And advise the owner to have it varnished at 2/3 year intervals if he wants it to last.

    Thanks Harry,
It seems really hard to get marine ply: the timber yard here does not stock it and has to order it in especially. They always tell me that unless the ply is submerged in water WPB is fine……
I will take on board your advice of the radius to the edges and then hope for the best. The ply is going into a metal frame but the edges will be exposed to the elements….

Hi Angelique, nice to see you around.
    😀
When I do a plywood sign (which used to be all I did at one time) I buy exterior grade plywood from a nearby lumberyard, not a big box store. I hand-pick it to make sure it’s not warped or full of “footballs”.
I cut it to size, sand the edges, blow off the dust with an air gun.
Then I seal the edges with two coats of Titebond 2 wood glue.
Then I prime with KILZ brand primer (it’s water based)
Then sand, blow off, wipe off, then I use 1-Shot or Ronan lettering enamel.
I dump a puddle of it in the middle of the sign and roll it out with a foam roller.
The last pass I hold the roller with my other hand and sort of just drag it across the panel, to break any bubbles.
    It rarely needs another coat.
I use the roller to do the edges of the sign too.

    Love….Jill

    Hih Jill

    Thanks for your reply.
I have used high grade WPB and it is a very good surface.
The product you talk about are brand names that I have not heard of over here, so can you expand on what they are exactly? Is the woodglue a PVA? And the 1-shot paint; is that an enamel paint or just a oil-based gloss?

    Thanks

So just so blondy here understands it all correctly:
-it does not matter that the PDF file looks exactly like I want it, the moment the printer gets it, they will shrink to fit and the lay-out gets messed up?
-Converting from Word can mess up the colours.
-setting the A4 in panels of 100 mm, 100 mm and 98 mm adds up to be 298mm: A4 is 297mm. Any reason for this mm difference?

Any printer will shudder at the thought of having to use graphic artwork produced in Word. It will be a struggle at every step.
You also have to check that the output is CMYK not RGB.

Why is that? I have no problem re-doing it in Ilustrator or Coreldraw (and Corel used to be a problem I found……)
The moment you turn it into a pdf-file (as requested by the printers) I thought it would not make any difference in what software it was made?

    aha thanks for explaining that!

But if I do the design in Word or Illustrator does not make any difference to the printing area?!? The same problem would occur?!?!
I am just not sure that when I mail the pdf file (that looks right) to the printers, if it comes out as I want in terms of the layout on paper……

No it is actually to deep to polish it. I did smooth the scratch with my nail and put black paint on it and wiped it then of with a tissue. It looks a bit better and I am sure the customer won’t complain (going by the amount of bird-sh*t that is on it most of the time, he is not too bothered by its appearance). It is just that I see the board very often and I know it will bother me more!!!

Okay… as I said.. I think there might be something wrong with the hub.. but, in theory, if the hub is working fine there should be no problem with the computer recognising the dongel in another location?
It’s just that on my laptop I have marked to correct port because in the other one it won’t recognise it…..
I mean.. there is no need for re-installing or so?

That’s what I was thinking… I take a cable from the router to the workshop and then put the repeater there. I don’t fancy running the cables trough the house (location of the router makes it a bit tricky). Does the length of cable infuence the speed of the connection?
But I think there is something fishy about the repeater: I have been trying in the house: When I do auto connect and it has found the router I move it around the place on an extension lead. Then it works. But when I unplug it into another socket it keeps searching and seems unable to find the router again………. stupid thing!!!

I am getting pretty fed up with this repeater. It seems to pick up the signal from our wireless music system (philips WAC streamium) rather than the router from the computer….
I thinking of be putting in a cable from the house to the workshop. Any reason why I shouldn’t? I’ll just bury it under the grass and see how long it will last without any protection around it…………

I can access files on the other computer. Internet is working but incredibly slow (can’t really work with it like that). But what I find strange is that when the repeater is halfway between the router and the workshop the computer in the workshop won’t pick up a signal, yet when it is in the workshop 10 metres or so away from the router it IS!?!?
The walls of the house and workshop are thick: cavity walls with insulation between (+insulated plasterboard on the internal walls), but I have placed both the repeater and the network adapter in front of the windows. Between the 2 buildings there is nothing to obstruct the signal, it’s just open space.

Dave: what do you mean with using electric mains as a network?!

Been there, done that… I tried the cheap ‘blue peter’-options, but I thought the repeater was the way to go.
I just tried by plugging the thing in in the workshop: bit of result. Good signal strength and I can access the network fine, but internet is still a problem………………….bizarre!!
I think I have just reached my limit of messing about with computer stuff…. I will try again tomorrow……….

I have made them as I could not get the size I needed. I used WPB grade plywood (3/4") painted in with gloss paint. Instead of chain I used timber battens as they are all used in very windy locations. It prevents them from blowing over (but wander around the pavement instead now :o)

I have had a good play with sail material and trying to stick vinyl on it or print on it. But as said before, it has been designed so that nothing adheres to is..
I got in touch with people at Sericol inks who did some samples for me.
The only way to get the ink to stick was by treating it with a solvent first (stripping the waterproof chemical). I did not feel comfortable with this so I have walked away from those kind of jobs. The sail maker I sometimes work for uses the product that Chris Wool suggested, but after sticking it he uses the sewing machine to keep it in place permanently. It goes trough the cutter no problem…..

Good luck with it, and if you find a succesful solution.. let me know 😀

Hmm t-cut? Yep I can certainly try that! It was just so weird.. Trying to be ultra careful not to get marks on it and then this happens…….. I was thinking lighter fuel as it seems to work well for cleaning, but I am sure that would affect the glue on the vinyl. I will certainly give the t-cut a try (finally get to use it… if you saw the state of my car.. it is clear that I don’t use the stuff to often……..)

I use artist acryllic. I have tried and tested many different types of paint and find that one the best: it is very thick for good coverage. I iron it afterwarths and it gives a really good finish. It stick really well.
I did try fabric paints aswell, but the solvents make the vinyll bubble: okay if you do only one coat, but no good for two…..
In terms of roller: I use a two inch foam roller.

    Hi Angelique
I also paint fabric occasionally 🙂 . How are you applying the paint, do you need a stencil material that sticks well (as in airbrushing)?
There’s a firm in the Uk called N C B who specialise in stencil materials, some are from the U.S.A. company Bren, they make a clear stencil, called P.Cut – I think.

I was discussing this just recently, if I can find the thread, i’ll put a link here.

    Barbara

    Thanks Barbara,

I need the stencil to stick reasonably well: I apply the paint with a stencilling brush and then go over it with a little roller (for an even finish).
I do two coats (it is usually white on a dark background) for good coverage.
It is not the end of the world if the vinyl lifts a little bit, but I could work faster if it didn’t…
I will look into that UK company that you mentioned

I agree with Peter and David: You are the designer.
I have done it a couple of times that I would let the customer decide on a font…. it takes them ages to make up their mind and the process gets quite tedious…
So now most of the time I tend to -after an initial consult- show them a few options that I think are suitable (maybe 3). More often than not they are happy to pick one of them.
I did initially try to make a short-list with fonts, but it did not really work for me…………………….

I saw someone using cable ties to fix them… did not look great… but I don’t think it would last…..

Looking at the pricing guide that I use as a reference for pricing signs on corriboard is a good bit cheaper. The material is cheaper but there is the same amount of time and labour involved as aluminium composite.
And since labour is the biggest part of the cost I would prever to use good materials that last… It is fine for signs that are only up for a couple of days/weeks… but would anyone use it for signs that are supposed to last longer?

I am only asking because I recently lost out on a job to someone who quoted a better price (using corriboard instead of alluminium composite)

I am trying to work out if I made the right decision in my choices in my proposal to the client….. so I know for next time 😮
