    Hi all,
I haven’t posted for a while (busy with other things than signs) but I have a quick question that I would like some ideas on:
I have been using my cutter a lot recently for cutting stencils to use on fabric. I have been using the ‘normal’ stuff that I have (Ritrama) and this has been working okay for me. But as I am running out of this and have to order new I was wondering if there is a better product out there for this.
I remember reading about a stencil product, but besides the stuff that stone cutters use I can’t seem to find anything else.
As I said, the Ritrama is doing the job, but I find removing the application tape very time consuming as that sticks better than the vinyl.

    Any thoughts and advice appreciated
    Many thanks

    Hi Angelique

I use the Hexis polymask quite a bit for paint stencils, but think from what you are saying that a masking vinyl will not do you any favors.

Certainly with the hexis product, the adhesive is designed to be ‘easy’ remove as it is only there for a short time. Think the application tape will just pull it way as you are finding now, especially on fabric.

    Hi Angelique
I also paint fabric occasionally 🙂 . How are you applying the paint, do you need a stencil material that sticks well (as in airbrushing)?
There’s a firm in the Uk called N C B who specialise in stencil materials, some are from the U.S.A. company Bren, they make a clear stencil, called P.Cut – I think.

I was discussing this just recently, if I can find the thread, i’ll put a link here.

    Thanks Barbara,

I need the stencil to stick reasonably well: I apply the paint with a stencilling brush and then go over it with a little roller (for an even finish).
I do two coats (it is usually white on a dark background) for good coverage.
It is not the end of the world if the vinyl lifts a little bit, but I could work faster if it didn’t…
I will look into that UK company that you mentioned

We use Avery Signmask Grey, Robert Horne will have it works fine.

    Hi Angelique
Here’s the link to the stencil materials i was talking about http://www.ncb-marking.co.uk/bren-stenc … html#vmask

The P.Cut is a little opaque-like mylar, firmer than vinyl, but by no means stiff. You still need the appy tape, but not a problem

What a good idea to use a roller to even out the paint-but where do you get one small enough – or are you doing large projects?
Do you use a ‘dedicated’ fabric paint too?

    Barbara 🙂

I use artist acryllic. I have tried and tested many different types of paint and find that one the best: it is very thick for good coverage. I iron it afterwarths and it gives a really good finish. It stick really well.
I did try fabric paints aswell, but the solvents make the vinyll bubble: okay if you do only one coat, but no good for two…..
In terms of roller: I use a two inch foam roller.

Maybe another way would be to get a less sticky application tape?!?!
    Does that exist?

Very good! Thanks for asking Lynn
He is 11 months now… how time flies…. he is a good little boy… very happy and smiley, but he makes working on signs quite hard at the moment. I only get to do a couple of hours in the evening when he is in bed. I had this naive notion that he would entertain himself during the day whilst I could get on with work… how wrong I was 🙄 But I am enjoying him a lot!
    How are you!

    Hi Angelique
I sometimes get similar work to yours—roller blinds and football kit and first-aid bags which are personalised for sponsors. These are usually small production runs.
I usually use Scotchcal 500series vinyl, which is quite soft, and carry it on a very low-tack application tape. A little heat also helps to bond the stencil and results in fewer problems in removing the app tape.
I always use ACRYLIC aerosols for this type of work, two light coats rather that one heavy one—it also dries quickly and the paint does’nt bleed under the stencil and no reaction with the stencil vinyl.
Sign+Digital in Dublin carry both of those products.
    Regards
    BARRY
