So far it looks like they failed to go off, but reports are still sketchy as to what has happened……
I best not comment any more… don’t want to upset any sympathisers

Dsi, I’m not sure if our laws differ, but until the good are paid for its not yours, that’s the simple case, as i said about the car on fiance, its still their car until paid for in full, weather its changed hands 20 times, they can still come and take it away and then pursue that person through the courts to get all the money they owe, if the car’s not the same or more value, they have large legal departments to fight it out.

I have lost money by not taking people to court, because i felt it weren’t worth the time and trouble, (was very busy at the time, and the money i lost was not that much compared to the money i would have lost chasing payment and not doing the work in hand).

The only reason people don’t retreive their goods is it would be hard to find or too costly to go through the courts, to gain access etc..

The example of the kitchen fitter is a bit different because his work is in a building, and most signs are outside, he would have to be invited in to remove his kitchen, so when he turned up to remove the kitchen, the police were call because he was trespassing,

So if you did take back your signs and were taken to court, (if you have proof you haven’t been paid or they can’t prove they have paid you) then its going to be hard work convicting you of theft..
The contractor has stolen the signs from you, and defrauded his client, so in effect they have stolen the signs from you, fenced them on to their client who can be done for receiving stolen goods…

And if you can’t remove the sign, walk up and down outside his shop with a protest banner tell all what a crook the guy is, every night until he pays you… 🙄 or better still, get payment up front or on delivery

On my paper work as most other companies, it states all good remain the sole property of me until full and final payment is received, so any good i supply to whoever remain mine, weather they have been paid for by a third party
If he supplied and fitted the units, he had every right to remove his goods, (as long as it doesn’t damage anyone else work etc) they have not been paid for and remain his property, as long as he can prove that to be the case, but if he had only fitted them he has no right to remove them.
because the kitchen was in a building and he had been denied access to remove them, he’s would have to go through the courts to gain access, which would cost an absolute fortune. If he had got there and managed to get the kitchen out, and in his van the police wouldn’t do anything, the only reason they did was because he was inside someones property.
The client would then have to chase the main contractor to get the work reinstalled, or join the list of contractors trying to get there money back..

I have removed signs a couple of times from large Asian restaurants, (who are very well clued up on the law) and if it were illegal for me to do so, i can guarantee they would have taken me to court and sued me for loss of business etc etc, but they know it belongs to me until paid..

It may have had something to do with the bankruptcy proceeding, as i’m not sure how that works, as they say possession is 9 tenths the law, and its hard to get access to a property with out great expense, so its cheaper to wait to see if you get anything back through the insolvency agent, or spend thousands on court costs for a couple of grand kitchen??

That’s not correct Fozzie, if you haven’t been paid for your sign it remains your property, and you are within your rights to remove it, weather the end user has paid someone else for the sign or not.
They can only do you for trespass if you are on their land, and you are caught.. Say climbing over a fence into a yard to remove the sign, but from the pavement its fine.. I checked all of this out, with CAB and the police, who said it was a civil matter and wouldn’t get involved unless there were trouble/violence

If someone buys a car on finance, and it then gets sold on twenty times, if that person hasn’t paid for the original fiance, it still belongs to the fiance company.

Since when has a Chinese takeaway have a bad day, he’s trying it on mate, these places take two or three grand a day..

Call him, tell him the cheque has not been honored/ not cleared, you give him one week to pay in full plus you bank charges, or you will remove the sign and charge him again to reinstall it, if payment don’t come, go to the shop at his busiest time and start to remove the sign.. There is nothing he can do, its your sign, and this is the only way you will get your money. I have had to do this in the past, a few times they nearly always pay, there is another thread on here about the very same situation

Sorry, i can’t be more helpful, see if you can get hold of a bit and test it in situate for a bit to see what happens

Not that I’ve done much wrapping, Looks like it should be quite easy? the car looks fairly flat.
You need to give it a good clean, in all the hard to reach places, and away you go,
Best to get someone to help, by holding the vinyl away from the body work as you rub it down.. Oracal do an on line demo video ( i thought was very good), gives a good idea of what needs doing… The vinyl used when i help another member, was very good and easy to use, with the help of a heat gun, this takes out the wrinkels and stuff.

I would say about two days work, just try and see how you get on

Mort the way we used to do it was, Buy a druatran (its like a negative of a photo, looks nearly black until lit) get one piece of 2mm clear and one of 2mm opal acrylic, sandwich the print between, sellotape all round the edge (as duratans are not water proof, any type of water based cleaner will remove the image) and slide into the box, duratrans are about £40 each for a standard size menu box around 550mm X 550mm if memory serves.. They will last forever..

Job and Drag on have said it in their last post i feel….
    Very well put Marcella..

We need to ask ourselves why all these people want to come to the UK??
We are a soft touch, they can get free housing, benefits and work cash in hand, and our justice system is lax. Why can’t these people be put in detention centers while their case’s are being heard, If i were fleeing persecution, i wouldn’t mind living in a brand new cell, more luxuries than i could ever dream of, carpets TV satellite free meals, drink, Education??
I’m also sick of people saying, but they do all the crap jobs, I remember watching a documentary on a trained doctor from Jamaica, doing a crap job driving the buses in the 60’s, he was earning 10 times the amount here and sending half his money back home, so not that crap a job when you think about it….. I would have people working for their benefits doing jobs that needed doing, and if they didn’t like that job maybe they would try and better themself, or get no benefits

Iraq, Iran… We invaded, Helped? whatever

These countries have killed and mutilated millions of its own population far more than Hitler did his population in Germany,
So why was it OK to wage war on Hitler who tortured and killed and not on Iraq??
Europe weren’t against us when it came to liberating them from Germany did they.

I think we are a very tolerant society, but its now time to shut our boarders, recall all of our troops (coz everyone thinks we are invaders trying to steel their wealth), and start sorting out our problems..

Stop giving money to Europe and Africa, and look after our own. My Nan was giving money, clothes etc to help with relief in Africa 80 years ago when she was a little girl.. but most goes on corrupt governments, yet if we sent troops in to take the governments out we would be hero’s for a few months then they would be attacking us… You just can’t win..

Trouble is Jem, if we /government don’t do something fast they will win, and have been since 9/11, they have Richard Reed in jail, 100% proof he was going to blow up a plane, he will live in luxury for maybe 20 years then let out, he should have been hung or better still beheaded in the new wembley stadium on telly.. what was that politician said in the 60’s, our street would run with blood..

I believe it has everything to do with race,
Look at every country in the world, where the most horrendous crimes against humanity and corruption are, middle east, africa and the like..

Do you know why Madrid was bombed?? because it was once a supposed muslim home land that was taken from them centuries ago, and that was their revenge, how fair was that….

If it was a Christian group of terrorist that did this in their countries, they would have been burning every non asian and church they could find by now, yet we just sit back and do nothing..

How can we be a proud nation, when your not even allowed to celebrate St Georges day or put out a Union Jack, or sing bar bar black sheep..coz your classed as racists.

    Well Said Drag on…

That i feel is the trouble with this country no one will stand up and fight back, everyone is scared to say anything because they will be branded racist

Racism is not a one way street, people in this country are one of the fairest nations about… Look at all the people that supported the live 8 concert and how many are protesting at Gleneagles to try and help stop poverty…. how many in the crowd did you see from ethnic backgrounds (everyone had a fair chance at getting tickets), how many ethnic bands did you see, not that many, bit different to the support they give to the Nottingham carnival

I think it’s time to take the gloves off and fight Back close our boarders DNA tested & finger printed everyone, and start rounding up the undesirables and slinging them out… One labour MP said the other week that 1 in 4 immigrants now staying here are illegal….
I’ve been born and breed in London, have a black raster foster brother, who is like a blood relation, and many other races as good friends, i wouldn’t call my self rascist, but am fed up with many people using it as a all out clause..

The law in this country is a joke… they reward the thieves, rapists and murders, and persecute the hard working honest people with car fines taxes etc..
They bring in new laws about religious intolerance, but for years allowed that dickhead with the hooks for hands to spout western hatred, and we paid him thousands in dole money and housing,

Its a very sad day for us all, we will never see the full horror of what has happened, (as i did when i was caught up in the clapham junction rail crash) maybe they should show that on the 6.00 news, people may begin to sit up and take notice, and not allow the likes of Blair misses

I bought some software a few months back, all sealed and boxed, loaded it on my machine put all my book keeping on and away i went..
Been really busy and haven’t had time to register it, (you can use it 15 times before it needs doing), call them the other day to register and was told they no longer support this software, so cannot release the code (software is quick-books pr0 2002, they have only just brought out 2005) the software will not work, and is totally useless….so who is robbing who??

Its very true what others have said, whats the difference between sharing clipart, fonts, vehicle outlines, or a £3000 copy of flexisign? The difference is the other companies loss more money because everyone thinks its OK to share a font or two..

How many times has some come to you for a quote, and shown you another sign companies drawing, would you turn them away or do the job??

I’ve used flexi and other programs, they are great and do some things faster and more efficiently, but i don’t see them being worth £3000.. I use corel draw 12 and a plot manager, total cost around £220 inc, i can create any type of sign quickly and effectively.

Good point that Rob.. Some old timer that i worked with, told me a story of how they used to do work from craddles and boson chairs…

Back then they would use scaffold type poles counter balanced over the building, weigh everyone, make the calculation, and put weights on the poles, anyway one particular time they were all on site doing a high level sign, someone had forgot to add the weight of the sign and all five of them went over the edge, all dead … very sad

No they just steal everybody designs and make it cheaper (cheaper materials and labour)..reverse engineering is one of there biggest assets.. That’s how their car industry took off, they bought cars from other countries and basically copied them, and we allowed that to happen.

We allow all there imports, quite freely, but try and get our exports to them they come under tight condition, I read some where that jaguar were exporting cars to china i think it was and because someone had forgot to do somthing very un-important on the forms, the cars were impounded and then returned to the UK somthing like 3 months later…
Have a look at things at home, see where things come from… and compare the quality… had some printed cups, the joke type ones, the ones from china are really poor quality, the printing and glaze finish are very rough compare to the English ones

Sorry i didn’t mean to come across rude and arrogant…
yes if your buying big equipment, electronics in particular, that is where most of it is produced by the likes of Sony etc… but it’s only in them countries because it has cheap labour, as for most stuff that i have seen and indeed bought in places like Thailand, India, and Marius while there, , have been not up to scratch and most are still well behind.. even Hong kong where i bought a bulk ink system (mail order), the price was cheap, it works fine, but the quality was poor, the filler lids didn’t fit tightly, the plastic retainer for the ink cartridges weren’t moulded properly and fitted poorly, but the Epsom printer its going on, was built in the Philippines and is out standing quality, but it’s made by Epsom in state of the art factories to there strict quality controls, not buy Joe bloggs the sign maker in India, yes it may be fantastic value, but what will the quality be? again it may be made fantasticly well but what sort of garantee do you have, its not like i can view samples.
And i wouldn’t class south Africa as a third world country..

I would say the food, drink and a few hand crafted novelties are very good over there, but most good are cheap rubbish, even the silk is poor, with hand printed design that come off in the first wash, it just a lot cheaper there. you can buy a £3.00 item in a market here, or get the same item there for 20p….but it’s still cheap tatt….. that goes for most of the third world contries i’ve been too..
Its the same with the rest of the goods we buy that comes from these third world places… look at how years ago when you bought toys, they were quality, well made and lasted, compare the quality today very poor..

What you need to do is print out a colour swatch sheet on your machine (little squares) and just match it by eye..

Dewi, Jem, good tip afor when your doing surveys, is to measure lots, say you are doing only a fascia job, measure the fascia and the windows, maybe the brick columns if there are any… then when you get back to the shop, and you doubt your fascia measurement, check the window ones… that should give you a good idea if its correct or not. hope that makes sence 😮

If i had the fully heated and well lit unit, room to get a large transit van in with plenty of room all round it, and the laminator and printing equipment, i would have no problem doing them…

I think the thing with it, is if you have done the wrap, or it has been done properly by someone else you won’t get too many problems…

There are a lot of people out there that just use the cheapest material and only want to spent two hours wrapping a complete van….the other day i watch someone trim some vinyl on a van, he was using a Stanley knife with a blade that was rusty and giving it some welly to cut through the vinyl, when he had finished it looked OK but when whoever comes to take it off, there will be left with deep cut mark’s and the customer will do his nut about them, properly blaming the remover… Also it looked like cheapo vinyl so after 3-4 years it will be brittle and take for ever to get off.

When you watch the orcal wrapping video, you will see the guy take off side indicators, door handles, etc put the vinyl on and then reinstall them, not just cut round them.
Also i think the wraps were designed to be remove after shorter periods of time say six months to a year not 3-4 years (most companies would only keep a van 3 years and then sell it on, so wouldn’t want to pay a fortune for it to be removed properly)

If that’s whats all around, then i can’t see what there on about….? unless all the other buildings are modern.

But that’s what i mean, you make a sign sympathetic to the surroundings, using traditional methods and they blast ya for it, yet the other signmaker down the road puts up 3mm foamex black block text on white panel..

I do feel its up to us, as signmakers to help the public get a better designed sign and help bring the area up to how they would have been in the past…..
The other day i quoted a job, he wanted white perspex panels with black text… (Hardware shop) with a little help from me he has ended with cream panels chocalate brown text with coffee coloured drop shadows, for about the same price… will post a pic when its up.
I think it will look a hundred times better than black and white

To be honest mate, i don’t blame the council, (if its the one I’m thinking of) Its like taking a 1920s vintage car and sticking racing stripes and wide wheels on it… very tasteful.

As i have said in the past, i think the councils should get more involved, as they do with building control.
I feel it should fit in with the local area, where i live its a little villagey place, and sticking up cheap foamex signs (black on white type of thing) or flashing neon should be banned.. There are places/high streets that can take that sort of sign and places that can’t, yet most signmakers will stick up cheap tatt just to get a job out of it.. and the council don’t say anything about it

I’m not having a go at anyone here, hope its not come across that way, but i feel this should be tackled.. Imho i think all signs should have to have planning permision..

What do you mean by budget sign??
Is it metal swing sign with scroll work gallows bracket, or just an aluminimum square type sign screw direct to the wall..?
Being a listed building or even if it was just in a village type setting i would only use a gallows type wall bracked with swing sign panel (not wood panel that is), as that is more in keeping with the area

We have got some right abortions around here with foamex.. 5mm and 10mm, i will try and take a few pics to show, it good viewing. On one 10mm panel, it has curled at the end by about 30mm..

Rob, whats the joins like on the dibond stuff like? had a job last week, did it in perspex but dibond would have been ideal, but i was unsure what the joint would look like, it weren’t that high up

I bought one last week, 9000 btu’s from Sainsbury homebase for £136 it a portable one just stick the hose out the window or you can drill a hole through the wall, works really well, well worth it, i only have one computer and cutter, but when its all on the heat is quite a lot to deal as I’ve only got a small office

The sign remains your property until paid for.. Whether it was third party or not. same as if you buy a second hand car which turns out to be on fiance the company can take it from you..
I did a sign for a shop fitter, window vinyls and panels, i was paid a deposit for the work (which covered the cost of the window graphics), but not the balance, anyway shop open i contacted the owner, he said he had paid the shop fitter, the shop fitter said he hadn’t etc etc…. I said the sign in the window has been paid for but the panels haven’t, if not paid within 7 day i would remove them, 7 days can still no payment, i spoke to citizen advice who said if the signs have not been paid for, they still belong to me, full stop. I contacted the police, who said it was a civil matter but would supply back up if trouble started ( i had been threaten by the owner) I went there took down the signs after a lot of aggro and threats, by the time i got home, the owner had phoned saying he would pay, fine i said i will fit next week once the cheque clears, he begged me to come back that night, which i did in the end but charged him an extra £300 fitting. Turns out the shop fitter was one of his relations..??

That’s exactly what i was going to say John… I’ve seen them turn up for interviews in jeans, and dirty old tee shirts, and ones in suites… both were a total joke, demanding £20,000 A YEAR AT 16 and only wanting to do a 3 days week….. Then again i worked for sign companies that work the same way…

Trouble today is you can’t let your kids out in case they are mugged or kidnapped… Over here the punishment does not fit the crime, bring back hanging and flogging, then people might think twice about doing it
Just last week i think it was a 5-6 year old boy was kidnapped by two 10 year olds girls, they tied him up and did other stuff to him. Not sure of all the facts as it turns my stomach and i couldn’t read it… whats the world coming too (?)

    quote zanady:

I quoted him £250.00, only to be told I was expensive. He went on to tell me the best quote he had was £68.00, YES £68.00, and produced a quote from this company as proof.

The company in question has only been trading for three months, so I told him if he got them to do the work then fine, but my price is £250.00.
And I would not be surprised if he would have problems i.e. inferior materials and poor fitting, and when he does have problems they are no longer in business.

This is part of the problem COWBOY firms providing inferior and shoddy work at STUPID prices.

    😀

Good point Andy, but the trouble is a lot of these firms keep going.. One shop near me, was doing poor cheap work, (so i’ve been told), it took him 9 years to fold, thats a lot of work he’s taken from other sign makers in the area..

That’s a good little program, think that could help convince some clients
